Ideal Home Trailer – Gay couple Paul Rudd & Steve Coogan get an unexpected grandson

April 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We got the first picture from Ideal Home back in May 2016, with the film started shooting and we discovered Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan were teaming up to play a married gay couple. It’s taken a while but the trailer for the film has now arrived, with a US release of June 21st set.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd star as Erasmus and Paul, a bickering gay couple whose life is turned inside out when a ten-year old boy shows up at their door claiming to be Erasmus’ grandson. Neither Paul, nor Erasmus, are ready to give up their extravagant lifestyles to be parents, but maybe this little kid has thing or two to teach them about the value of family.’

Take a look at the trailer below. Unfortunately it’s not clear when we might get to see it in the UK. [Read more…]

New Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer – Alden Ehrenreich explores an iconic character’s beginnings

April 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After an extremely muted response to the first trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, there was a lot riding on this new promo for the film about the early days of the iconic Han Solo. This one certainly makes things look at lot more entertaining and suggests Alden Ehrenreich might be a better Harrison Ford replacement that the previous trailer did.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

‘The film stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.’

‘Ron Howard directs “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are the producers. Lawrence Kasdan, Jason McGatlin, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller serve as executive producers. Jonathan Kasdan & Lawrence Kasdan wrote the screenplay. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” opens in UK cinemas 24th May.’ [Read more…]

The Meg Trailer – Jason Statham takes on a truly Giant Shark

April 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Meg may be one of the worst film titles around (and even worse than the book it’s based on, which was simply titled ‘Meg’), but the movie might prove to be guilty pleasure fun. It’s basically Jaws on steroids but with its tongue slightly in its cheek.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”).

‘A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.’

The film is due in UK cinemas on August 10th. Take a look at the new poster and trailer below. [Read more…]

La Cage Aux Folles (Criterion Blu-ray Review) – 40-years on the gay classic returns in HD

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Serrault, Claire Maurier, Remi Laurent
Director: Edouard Molinaro
Running Time: 87 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 2nd 2018 (UK)

We have reviewed 1978’s classic La Cage Aux Folles before, so if you’re just interested in the movie, you can click here to see what we had to say about it. The movie has just had a Criterion Collection release in the UK, so here we’ll concentrate on this first Blu-ray appearance in Britain.

As the film opens it seems like the HD upgrade isn’t going to be worth it as the first few shots in the drag club are quite soft and grainy. However, as soon as the action moves into gay couple Renato (Ugo Tognazzi) and Albin’s (Michel Serrault) apartment, things improve considerably, with the picture getting sharper and more detailed. My Own Private Idaho: Premium Collection (Blu-ray Review) – Gus Van Sant’s gay classic gets a new release

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, William Richert, Udo Kier, Flea
Director: Gus Van Sant
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th 2018 (UK)

My Own Private Idaho is the sort of film that really shouldn’t work. The movie apparently came about when writer/director Gus Van Sant was working on three separate scripts and then decided to merge them all together. The result is a movie that ought to be a mess. The tone and story jump about, some of its pretty random and surreal, and its Shakespearean pretentions are a bit bizarre.

However, it works. These disparate elements and tones come together, helped by an astonishing performance by River Phoenix as young hustler Mike. His character – an outsider living a marginal and disintegrating existence – is a reflection of the film itself. It ultimately becomes an unexpected masterclass of montage – where by placing seemingly disparate things side-by-side and throwing in unexpected imagery (not least the famous falling barn), it creates something unique and pulls you into a character and world in a way few other films have ever managed. Coffee House Chronicles: The Movie (DVD Review) – Gay gays meeting & hooking up gets the anthology treatment

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Drew Droege, David Pevsner, Chris Salvatore, Nicholas Downs
Director: Stewart Wade
Running Time: 75 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th 2018 (UK)

Coffee House Chronicles was originally an anthology Youtube web series, but here the episodes get pulled together and slightly recut to turn them into a movie. While that may sound like a slightly cheating way to monetise the show, it actually works surprisingly well. As individual episodes they were quite fun, but pulled together thye add up to more than the sum of their parts, allowing it to layer together a light look at the way modern gay men relate to one another.

The film consists of a series of first encounters (mostly) between gay men, most of which – as the title suggests – take place in coffee houses. These meetings range from a man realising his ‘date’ is much younger than he’s said he was, to someone in a long-term relationship trying to organise sex with a porn star for his boyfriend. There’s also a trans man on his first date with a woman after transitioning, and two zombie extras in a movie figuring out if they want to go on a date even though they don’t know what they really look like under the makeup. When a terrorist bomb explodes Jeff loses both his legs. Due to horrific photos of him at the bombing which quickly become iconic, he is held up by a hero by some and a prime example of ‘Boston Strong’. The Man Who Killed Don Quixote Trailer – Terry Gilliam’s passion project is finally on its way

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terry Gilliam’s quest to get The Man Who Killed Don Quixote made has been so beset by disasters that it spawned a feature-length documentary about it, 2002’s Lost In La Mancha. In case you don’t know the story, after several years of trying to get it off the ground, the movie finally went into production in 2000, with Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort starring. However very quickly a combination of factors, ranging from Rochefort getting seriously ill to a storm wrecking the sets, meant to the whole thing had to be called off.

Over the years Gilliam has tried on numerous occasions to get it off the ground again, but a range of issues, mainly surrounding financing, means it’s never happened. Until now that is. However, even now the problems haven’t ended as while it’s in the can and pretty much completed, a court case over who owns the rights has been launched, which means it can’t be screened at Cannes as originally planned.

It doesn’t help either that Gilliam angered many with recent tone deaf comments about the #metoo movement, which seemed to blame women for being harassed and sought to excuse men from repercussions.

However, the first trailer for the movie has now arrived. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote tells the story of a deluded old man (Jonathan Pryce) who is convinced he is Don Quixote, and who mistakes Toby (Adam Driver), an advertising executive, for his trusty squire, Sancho Panza. The pair embark on a bizarre journey, jumping back and forth in time between the 21st and magical 17th century. Gradually, like the infamous knight himself, Toby becomes consumed by the illusory world and unable to determine his dreams from reality. The tale culminates in a phantasmagorical and emotional finale where Toby takes on the mantle of Don Quixote de la Mancha.’ [Read more…]
