Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool Will Be Pansexual, We’re Promised

November 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

deadpool-pic1-slideEarly next year Fox is going in a slightly different direction with the X-Men franchise, by giving the wise-cracking Deadpool his own movie. During the years it’s been in development many have worried whether the movie would retain the violence, sarcasm and wit of the comics, as well as having Deadpool breaking the fourth wall.

While actor Ryan Reynolds has promised it will still as closely to the tone of the page as possible (which has been borne out by the trailer), one thing that wasn’t clear was how they would deal with Deadpool’s sexuality.

The character’s fluid sexuality has been something that the comic’s writers have been keen on, such as co-creator Fabian Nicieza previously saying, “Deadpool is whatever sexual inclination his brain tells him he is in THAT moment. And then the moment passes. Not trying to be dismissive, but readers always want to ‘make a character their own’ and often that is to the exclusion of what the character might mean to other fans. I’ve been dogged with the DP sexuality questions for YEARS. It is a bit tiring. He is NO sex and ALL sexes. He is yours and everyone else’s. So not dismissive, but rather the epitome of inclusive.”

Now those involved with the film have weighed on what the big screen take will be, with director Tim Miller telling Collider, “Pansexual! I want that quoted. Pansexual Deadpool.”

Ryan Reynolds meanwhile adds, “There is some sexuality in this movie for sure. You kinda think you have moments when you’re shooting where you think, ‘This is, uh, a little excessive. This is a comic book movie. Are we gonna get away with this?’ But so far so good.”

Hopefully this will be something that comes through on the screen and isn’t just one of those things that the filmmakers say is true, but there’s little evidence on the screen. We’ll be able to tell when the movie is released early next year.

Alice Through the Looking Glass Trailer – Back into Wonderland with Johnny Depp & Mia Wasikowska

November 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alice-through-the-looking-glass-trailer-slideEven Disney was surprised when Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland made over a billion dollars at the box office, but it ensured a sequel quickly went into pre-production. Although its taken longer than originally planned, Alice Through The Looking Glass is now on its way, and we have the first trailer to prove it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, Alice returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. Directed by James Bobin, who brings his own unique vision to the spectacular world Tim Burton created on screen in 2010 with “Alice in Wonderland,” the film is written by Linda Woolverton based on characters created by Lewis Carroll and produced by Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd and Tim Burton with John G. Scotti serving as executive producer.

‘“Alice Through the Looking Glass” reunites the all-star cast from the worldwide blockbuster phenomenon, including: Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter along with the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. We are also introduced to several new characters: Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter’s father and Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen), a peculiar creature who is part human, part clock.

‘Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit (Sheen), Absolem (Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” opens in UK cinemas on May 27, 2016.’ [Read more…]

First Pics Of Eddie Redmayne In JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them

November 5, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fantastic-beasts-logoWhen I saw the final Harry Potter movie at the cinema, at the end a guy behind me, who was probably about 20, said, “Well, that’s the end of my childhood.” It was one of the most oddly poignant remarks I’ve ever heard, as to an extent he was right – something he had grown up was coming to an end just as he himself was becoming an adult.

However, it turns out it’s not 100% over, as JK Rowling is taking us back into her Wizarding World by writing the script for Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them (plus, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is heading to the London stage). The first images from the movie have now arrived, which you can see below.

Set about 80 years before the Potter stories, the film stars Eddie Redmayne as world-famous magizoologist Newt Scamander, who embarks on an adventure in 1926 New York. Not too much is known about the exact plot, although EW remarks that the briefcase seen in the pic is somehow ‘pivotal’, and that in their cover image sees Scamander standing in front of the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), the American equivalent of the Ministry of Magic.

Potter helmer David Yates is back in the director’s chair, with the film due out November 2016. [Read more…]

New Deep South: Queer Youth Episode 1 – Instababy – Into the lives of queer youth in the American south

November 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

new-deep-south-ep1All-female new media start-up The Front has debuted a new web series this week, which aims to take a look at the lives of young queer people living in the American deep south.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Instababy is a story of two people trying to create a family, improvising with the best resource at their disposal: Instagram.

‘In time for National #‎Adoption Month and the Mississippi Same-Sex Adoption Ban hearing this November 6.

‘Our first episode follows a couple in Jackson, Mississippi trying to start a family online in a state where same-sex adoption is still illegal. But overall, for queer couples living in areas remote from major gay urban centers, the question is less “Can we?” than “How do we?” In the absence of local family planning resources and without the means or connections to professional adoption agencies, Toni and Keeta improvise.

‘This series explores the vibrant and multifaceted queer culture that is emerging in the American South. Our first stop is Jackson, Mississippi and the Delta area. Playing against old stereotypes of Mississippi as a state of social conservatism and stagnation, we follow the lives of queer youth to explore the tangled and complex nature of sexual identity in the New Deep South.’

Take a look at the first episode of New Deep South below. [Read more…]

It’s not clear what role the actors will play.

Paul Rudd & Alexander Skarsgard Up For Duncan Jones’ Mute

November 4, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alexander-skarsgardMoon and Source Code director Duncan Jones has been caught up for the last couple of years making Warcraft: The Beginning, but he’s now going back to a movie he was planning before the fantasy film took over – Mute.

Now he’s beginning to fill the cast, as Variety reports that Paul Rudd & Alexander Skarsgard have signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller.

In the movie, ‘Skarsgard will portray a mute bartender in Berlin, 40 years in the future in what has become a roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West. His character will be looking for a woman who has disappeared — and when his search takes him deep into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd’s character) seem to be the only recurring clue.’

Jones comments, “I’ve been working towards making ‘Mute’ for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film. The fact that I get to make it with Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd makes it all the more exciting!”

Working from a script by Jones and Mike Johnson, the film will start shooting next March.

Closets

Together they find solace and hope in each other’s stories, and the knowledge that they aren’t alone.
