Stonewall Director Roland Emmerich Says He’s Found It Easy To Be Gay In Hollywood

September 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

roland-emmerich-stonewallWhile LGBT actors still have to face various issues in Hollywood, not least due to many executives (some of whom are gay themselves) still feeling it’s ‘easier’ to cast a straight or closeted person in case having a gay actors affects the project’s money-making potential in some parts of the world.

However, it doesn’t seem that’s as much of an issue for those behind the camera, with directors such as Bryan Singer and Roland Emmerich being handed massive projects with no one really caring about their sexuality (although it did become a bit of an issue for Singer last year).

2012 and The Day After Tomorrow director Roland Emmerich has been talking about how easy it’s been for him, telling The Guardian at the Toronto International Film Festival, “For me, being gay in Hollywood was easy. I never made a big deal out of it. I was just openly gay. It happened late because I never wanted to have the words ‘gay director’ in front of my name. I wanted to make such different films. It’s not befitting but now I can be openly gay and still make these films.”

He’s also promised that he’s included gay characters in his upcoming Independence Day seuqel, Resurgence, something that’s still incredibly rare in mega-budget movies.

Emmerich was in Toronto for the premiere of Stonewall, his movie about the 1969 riots in New York that are seen as the beginning of the modern gay rights movements. There’s been plenty of controvery over the film, with many accusing it – based solely on the trailer – of white-washing and erasing trans people, as it focuses on a white, cisgender gay man (played by Jeremy Irvine), but it’s only in Toronto that the first people have been able to see the full movie and judge whether the accusations are justified.

The director doesn’t seem too bothered about the controversy though, calling it “strange” and saying, “A friend of mine was executive for Tristar at the time of Philadelphia. They got so much shit from the gay audience and when this whole controversy over my trailer started, he actually just sent me a couple of quotes people had said about Philadelphia just to make me feel that there’s a precedent for this.”

Crush Of The Day: Alex Pettyfer Is Almost Naked For Photographer Mario Testino

September 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a while famed photographer Mario Testino has been adding to his Towel Series, where he snaps the famous and/or beautiful with just a towel to cover their modesty.

Now he’s added number 88 in the series, which features Magic Mike and I Am Number Four star Alex Pettyfer, with his towel held coyly in front of him as he looks at the camera.

We have to say, Testino has had a great idea here, as he’s managed to get all sorts of people involved, and if they look as good as Pettyfer does in the buff, it will always be great to see the images.

The photographer released the image via Instagram, which you can see below. [Read more…]

Brie Larson Will Be Billie Jean King In Battle of the Sexes Movie

September 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brie-larsonThe battle of the Battle Of The Sexes movies continues with Variety revealing that Brie Larson has replaced Emma Stone in a planned film about the infamous tennis match between the legendary Billie Jean King and misogynist Bobby Riggs.

The film is one of two movies about the event in the works, with HBO planning one starring Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, while Fox Searchlight is behind the one with Larson as King and Steve Carell as Riggs.

Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the script. Previously Danny Boyle was set to direct, but it now appears he’ll produce with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) helming.

The film will be set in the early 70s, when former male World Number 1 tennis played and self-proclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs’ declared that the female game was inferior and that a top woman player couldn’t beat him even at the age of 55. He then challenged the already legendary female player Billie Jean King to a match, but she declined.

However Margaret Court, who was then the top female player in the world, took on the challenge, but lost to Bobby in straight sets, seemingly confirming Riggs’ claims. King wasn’t going to stand for that and agreed to play Bobby in what became a nationally televised media sensation.

It was an important time in King’s life for another reason too, as for the first time she’d relatively recently become involved in a relationship with a woman, even though she was still married to a man at the time.

These aren’t the only Battle Of The Sexes movies in the works either, as Will Ferrell has previously been reported to be working on a comedy version where he’ll play Bobby Riggs. However there hasn’t been any news on that film for some time.

Tom Hardy Responds To His Tetchy Encounter With A Journo Who Asked Him About His ‘Ambiguous’ Sexuality

September 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hardy-legendA few days ago there was a lot of interest in a moment at a Toronto International Film Festival press conference for the movie Legend, where Tom Hardy shut down a journalist from a gay publication who asked him about his ‘ambiguous’ sexuality, seeming rather frustrated at the line of questioning.

While many agreed with how he handled it (and admittedly it was rather smart what he did, whether he should hve done it or not), others were less impressed by what they saw as Tom being far more defensive than he needed to be, especially as one of the characters he plays in Legend is bisexual.

Now Hardy has responded with his take on what happened, telling The Daily Beast, “I think everybody is entitled to the right to privacy. There should be elegant ways to approach any topic, and there’s a time and place to approach anything and have a good, common sense conversation about anything. I do think that there’s a responsibility for people to own the way that they speak publicly. This doesn’t stop us from being human beings; some things are private. I’m under no obligation to share anything to do with my family, my children, my sexuality—that’s nobody’s business but my own. And I don’t see how that can have anything to do with what I do as an actor, and it’s my own business. If you knew me as a friend, then sure, we’d talk about anything. But that was a public forum, and for someone to inelegantly ask a question that seemed designed entirely to provoke a reaction, and start a topic of debate… It’s important destigmatizing sexuality and gender inequality in the workplace, but to put a man on the spot in a room full of people designed purely for a salacious reaction? To be quite frank, it’s rude. If he’d have said that to me in the street, I’d have said the same thing back: ‘I’m sorry, who the fuck are you?’

“What he had to talk about was actually interesting, but how he did it was so inelegant. And I appreciate that I could probably have more grace as a human being, but I’m just a bloke. I’m just a man. And I’m just a man doing a job. I’m not a role model for anyone, and you’re asking me something about my private life in a room full of people. I don’t want to discuss my private life with you. I don’t know you! Why would I share that with a billion people? Also, if you felt it was so important for people to feel confident to talk about their sexuality, why would you put somebody on the spot in a room full of people and decide that was the time for them to open up about their sexual ambiguity? There’s also nothing ambiguous about my sexuality, anyway. I know who I am. But what does that have to do with you? And why am I a part of something now that, however legitimate, I haven’t offered my services for? It’s not about what he and his publication stands for, none of that is offensive, and on the contrary, it’s very admirable, and an important issue. But how I was asked was incredibly inelegant, and I just thought it was disrespectful and counterproductive to what he stands for.”

Tom’s response has also met with differing opinions, with many agreeing that he has a right to his privacy and that there was something rather inelegant about the way the questions were put to him. However many others are less forgiving, seeing the ‘privacy’ argument as falacious, due to the fact it suggests same-sex attraction/experiences are something inherent ‘private’ in a way opposite sex attraction isn’t.

It was undoubtedly an interesting encounter that’s it’s possible to read in several ways, and to be honest neither the journalist (who did ask wooly, leading questions that deliberately avoided what he really wanted to talk about) or Tom (who got more defensive than was really necessary in a way that suggested discomfort about the topic more than how it was asked) covered themselves in glory.

The 70s/80s TV Show Hart To Hart May Be Getting A Major Gay Makeover

September 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hart-to-hartIt appears NBC is thinking about doing something that’s never really been tried before, a crime show led by two gay characters. The US TV network has put a remake of the TV show Hart To Hart into development, according to Deadline, with the ‘twist’ being the fact that this time it revolves around a gay couple.

The original show ran from 1979 to 1984 (followed by a series of TV movies) and revolved around Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as self-made millionaire Jonathan Hart and his journalist wife Jennifer, who in each episode of their globe-trotting adventures got involved in murders, robberies and other crimes, using their amateur sleuthing skills to find the bad guys.

Carol Mendelsohn (CSI, Melrose Place) will produce the new version, with Christopher Fife writing the pilot script. The series will focus ‘on “by the book” attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman, who must balance the two sides of their life: action-packed crime-solving in the midst of newly found domesticity’.

Although shows with gay leads have a very mixed history on US network TV, several networks showed interest in the new Hart To Hart, to the point where NBC will have to pay major penalty if they don’t put the pilot into production.

It would be great to see the show make it to air, as it may be one of the first major shows with major gay characters where their sexuality isn’t the focus of the series.

Bryan Singer Plans 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Movie

September 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bryan-SingerFor quite a while it looked like we were going to get a David Fincher version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but unfortunately the movie he was developing with Disney fell apart of budget and creative differences.

Now though it appears Bryan Singer is working on a movie version of Jules Verne’s classic novel. The director revealed the news himself on his Instagram, saying ‘It’s my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I’ve wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart. Not abandoning the #xmen universe. Very excited about #xmenapocalypse and beyond. #julesverne #20000leaguesunderthesea #nemo’

While the last time he took on a classic tale with Jack The Giant Slayer resulted in the biggest bomb of his career, hopefully this time he’ll have more success.

There’s not too much news on exactly what direction the film will take on the story of Captain Nemo and his incredible submarine, the Nautilus. Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney (featured in the picture below) are writing the script. [Read more…]
