Dwayne Johnson Will Have Big Trouble In Little China In A New Remake

June 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dwayne-johnsonNow here’s a remake that makes sense. While Big Trouble In Little China has a big cult following and a lot of people love it, it’s always been a slightly messy movie where the idea behind it always seemed better than the film itself.

Now a do-over of John Carpenter’s 1986 movie is coming, and TheWrap reports that it’s found a star, as Dwayne Johnson is attached to take over from Kurt Russell in the lead role.

The original follows a truck driver who ends up getting mixed up in a centuries old mystical mystery in San Francisco’s Chinatown, where there are plans to give a two thousand-year-old evil sorcerer a new body.

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class) will write the script but there’s no news on whether they’re planning any major changes to the plot, or when we might see the new film.

Masters Of Sex – Season 2 (DVD Review)

June 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan, Caitlin FitzGerald, Beau Bridges, Danny Huston
Director: Various
Running Time: 671 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

It’s back to the repressed 1950s in Masters Of Sex – Season 2, where Bill Master (Michael Sheen) is still dealing with the fact the world is less ready for his study into the body’s physiological response to sex than even he expected. He’s been let go from the hospital and is finding it tough to find somewhere to resume his work. Even when he finds a new hospital, it may not be the perfect fit he was hoping.

Things are complicated by his new baby, especially as he is aware the child probably isn’t biologically his. That also puts pressure on his relationship with his wife, as does his increasingly complicated relationship with the co-author of the study, Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan). Their sexual dynamic has stretched beyond their scientific experimentation, but they still wish to maintain a strong working relationship. [Read more…]

Whiplash (DVD Review)

June 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Miles Teller, JK Simmons, Paul Reiser
Director: Damien Chazelle
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

It’s not too surprising that most of the posters for Whiplash, and indeed the DVD cover, is covered in quotes and star ratings from reviews. After all, it was always going to be a tough sell at the cinema to get your average moviegoer to give it a chance, as few people will go ‘Do you fancy seeing the one about the young drummer who gets shouted at a lot?’ – unless you give them a damn good reason, that is. JK Simmons deservedly winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar didn’t hurt either.

It’s actually not too bad a plot synopsis that this is a film about a young drummer who gets shouted at a lot. It’s about a lot more than that too, not least what it takes to make someone truly great at something, rather than just being good. [Read more…]

President Snow Gets Smashed In A New The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Poster

June 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mockingjay-part-2-poster1It shouldn’t come as a surprise that in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, Katniss and co. aren’t suddenly going to become massive fans of President Snow, so seeing the statue of him above smashed to pieces isn’t a shock.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

‘THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 is released in UK cinemas on 19th November 2015.’

American Sniper (DVD Review)

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Kyle Gallner, Luke Grimes
Director: Clint Eastwood
Running Time: 132 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

Often when an actor has a passion project it turns out to be something that should never have been attempted and ends up as a very expensive way to massage their ego. However, while Bradley Cooper was one of the major driving forces behind American Sniper, it was always clear he was onto something interesting. Indeed, at one point Steven Spielberg even signed on to direct, before the gig went to Clint Eastwood.

While Clint may be known as a bit of a hard man actor, he really brings the emotion out of what could have been a rather stereotypical war story in other hands.

The film is about Chris Kyle (Cooper), who found ‘fame’ of sorts when he became the Navy SEAL sniper with the most verified kills in US history. However, the movie isn’t just about his time on the battlefield but also its effects – both how he deals with what he’s doing while on tour (which for a sniper is oddly personal, as it involves very deliberately finding a single person and snuffing out their life) and also when he arrives back home and is suddenly supposed to jump into ‘normal’ life again. Fortitude – Season 1 (DVD Review)

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Richard Dormer, Stanley Tucci, Sophie Grabol, Veronica Echegui, Michael Gambon
Director: Various
Running Time: 570 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

I enjoyed Fortitude but there is a slight sense with the 12-part series that a bunch of people sat in a room and came up with a list of TV shows they liked, and then tried to put together something that included a little bit of all of them. As a result there are echoes of Broadchurch, Lost, Twin Peaks, The X-Files, The Killing and various other things.

Indeed it gets to the point where it’s difficult not to feel the series ends up as something rather different from how it begins, to the point that those who were hoping for the initial murder-mystery might feel a little cheated when it goes a little sci-fi (even if it is very much at the softer, more realistic end of sci-fi). However, those who are open and stick with it are likely to find it rewarding. [Read more…]

Stretch (Blu-ray Review)

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Patrick Wilson, Chris Pine, Ed Helms, jessica Alba, James Badge Dale
Director: Joe Carnahan
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

Stretch is a bit of a crazy film. Indeed it’s so crazy that despite a cast full of well-known actors the studio behind it didn’t know quite what to do with it and cancelled its US cinema release just a couple of months before it was due to hit cinemas, before trying to sell it to another distributor. However, that’s a shame as while it is nuts and sometimes incredibly messy, it’s also oddly entertaining, even if you can see the studio’s point that it’s a tough film to properly market.

Patrick Wilson plays an LA limo driver whose life hasn’t turned out as he wanted – he planned to be an actor but never made it, he’s lost the love of his life and now he’s got a massive gambling debt and no time to pay it off. In the hope of getting a massive tip he takes a job driving an extremely eccentric passenger (Chris Pine), but soon finds him caught up in a situation involving foreign gangsters, the FBI, a suitcase full of cash, an asshole version of Ray Liotta (playing himself) and a psychotic tow truck driver. Shaun The Sheep The Movie (Blu-ray Review)

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Omid Djalili
Director: Mark Burton, Richard Starzak
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: U
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

It’s amazing to think that Shaun The Sheep started off as a minor character in one of the Wallace & Gromit shorts, as since then he’s become a bit of a children’s entertainment powerhouse, with a TV series, loads of merchandise, a spin-off (in the form of Timmy Time), and now a movie.

In the film Shaun decides that once more he must try to outwit the farmer so that and the flock can take the day off. However a series of accidents results in the sheep ending up in the big city. They dress up as humans and set out to look for the farmer, who has been knocked over the head and has amnesia. During to his shearing skills, the farmer becomes a celebrated hairstylist, but can Shaun and co. get to him and help him recover his memories, before the evil animal control man can get them? May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ant-Man-Poster1With Avengers: Age Of Ultron having already grossed $1.3 billion, Marvel/Disney is already having a great year, and they’ll be hoping for another hit in a couple of months with Ant-Man. Now a new poster has arrived, which you can take a look at above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

‘Marvel’s “Ant-Man” stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Judy Greer as Maggie, Tip “Ti” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Wood Harris as Gale, Jordi Mollà as Castillo and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. Channing Tatum May Have Two Kisses for Maddy

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing-TatumChanning Tatum is certainly keen to be master of his own destiny, having produced several of his recent movies and putting several more into development. Now he’s added a new one, Two Kisses for Maddy, which he will produce and which is being put together as a possible starring vehicle.

As Variety reports, the film ‘is based on Matthew Logelin’s memoir “Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love,” which centers on his marriage, the death of his wife 27 hours after she gave birth to their daughter and his experiences of raising his daughter as a single parent.’

Dana Stevens has been hired to write the screenplay.

Interestingly it almost became a Lifetime TV movie of the week a couple of years ago, but may now be getting a bit of an a-list upgrade.

Patricia Highsmith’s (Possibly Bisexual) Tom Ripley Heads For The Small Screen

May 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

talented-mr-ripleyAlthough many of us will remember Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, there have actually been a couple of other films based on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley in the past decade or so, including Ripley’s Game, starring John Malkovich, and Ripley Under Ground, with Barry Pepper.

Now there’s another take on the possibly gay of bisexual character in the works, as THR reports that Television 360, Endemol Shine Studios and publisher Diogenes are teaming up to turn the five-book series in a TV show. It’s early days though as before shopping it around to potential partners, they want to package it up with a writer or major filmmaker, as well as finding someone to play the title role.

Ripley is a true antihero – suave and charming, but also a con artist and serial killer – who is a very dangerous man to be around if you have something he wants. While it’s never explictly stated in the book that he is gay or bisexual, it is broadly hinted at and many have assumed that he is. For example there is his obsession with Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley (which was made unabashedly homoerotic in the 1999 film), and his lack of sexual desire for his wife, while many have read a gay subtext between Ripley and Frank Pierson in The Boy Who Followed Ripley. It’s not known whether this side of Tom Ripley will make it through to the TV show.

It should be added that Highsmith herself said she didn’t think Ripley was gay, instead suggesting that he wasn’t particularly sexual at all, but that he appreciated other men’s look (and certainly envied them). Of course the author wasn’t afraid of homosexuality, as in 1952 she wrote the lesbian-themed romance The Price Of Salt (under a pseudonym). Indeed it’s the fact that a film version of The Price Of Salt did so well at Cannes (which stars Cate Blanchett and goes by the title Carol), that makes this a particularly sensible time to try and bring Ripley to the small screen.
