Arrow’s Stephen Amell Feels Winter Olympics ‘Marred by Homophobia’

Russia must have been hoping the Sochi Olympics would be as much a celebration of their country as the London Olympics were for the UK. However it’s become an increasingly controversial event, marred the country’s increasingly homophobic laws, the government seemingly turning a blind eye to neo-Nazi groups attacking LGBT people and mixed messages over whether gay people would even be safe attending the games.

The homophobic atmosphere has caused many to speak out, including Arrow star Stephen Amell (who spent much of his early career playing gay roles). He took to Facebook to answer questions about his shows scheduling, saying Arrow is on a ‘mini hiatus so people can grit their teeth and suffer through an Olympic games marred by homophobia and mediocre levels of public interest.’

He later continued ‘Follow up point — Good luck to all the athletes who have worked so hard for so many years and essentially geared their entire life around this opportunity. Hopefully, a lot of them will use their success and a public platform to remind everybody this isn’t the stone age.’

It’s not the first time the hunky star has used Facebook to speak up for gay rights, such as during the US Supreme Court case over The Defence Of Marriage Act, when he said, “[m]arriage should be available to everybody. Some of the most loving, powerful relationships I’ve witnessed have been same-sex couples…Equal rights for all.”

Channel 4 Gets A Rainbow Re-brand To Support Gay Winter Olympics Athletes

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

channel-4-rainbow-logoThe UK’s Channel 4 has decided to publicly come out against the anti-gay laws in Russia and to support LGBT athletes in Sochi. They devoted a significant portion of last night’s Channel 4 News to the situation for gay people in Sochi, and today – to coincide with the Winter Olympics opening ceremony – the network’s logo is getting a rainbow-coloured overhaul.

Channel 4 is also launching a 90-second TV ad that will debut at 7pm on Friday – as BBC2’s live coverage of the opening ceremony nears its climax – in a “roadblock” across its main channel, E4, More4 and catch-up station 4Seven.

It’s fun, silly and more than a little camp, featuring a serious looking man who suddenly strips off to revealed he’s a gay hairy bear, who wants to sing about his support for gay mountain. Take a look at it below.

Cheyenne Jackson Gets Engaged To Actor Jason Landau

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cheyenne-jackson-jason-landauCheyenne Jackson isn’t wasting much time. Last August it was revealed he was getting a divorced from Monte Lapka. After 13-years together, their relationship broke down not too long after they able to walk down the aisle.

A few months later the first images of him with his new beau, actor and entrepreneur Jason Landau, started circulating.

Now their relationship is moving forward with US Weekly announcing that the couple has gotten engaged. It’s not clear when they may marry (indeed, it doesn’t appear his divorce from Lapka is finalised yet).

They certainly make a very cute couple, as you can see above and below, and we wish them all the best together.

Dallas Buyers Club (Cinema)

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, Denis O’Hare, Steve Zahn
Director: Jean-Marc Vallee
Running Time: 127 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 7th 2014 (UK)

The last of the Oscar contenders to be released in the UK turns out to be one of the strongest. Sometimes the circumstances behind the making of a film shine through on the screen, and this story, with its lengthy birth, tiny budget and rushed schedule is a perfect example. It gives the film an urgency, a roughness and a pace that might not have been the case with a bigger budget, and it also ensure extremely committed performances from all concerned – they are doing it for love, not money. Maladies Trailer – James Franco turns troubled actor in a new movie

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco is a very busy man, writing, directing and/or starring in more movies than most actors could humanly fit in. Now the trailer for a new one has arrived, Maladies, where he plays a troubled actor.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A daring new film from internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Carter, Maladies charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star (James Franco) in 1960’s New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career. Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister at the seaside home of their best friend (Catherine Keener). But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp. Featuring an award-winning ensemble, including David Straithairn and Alan Cumming, Maladies is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.’

It’s out in the US in March.

Jay Baruchel Joins Stephen King Adaptation, TheTen O’Clock People

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jay-baruchelFor quite a while now Fright Night’s Tom Holland has been planning to adapt the Stephen King novella The Ten O’Clock People, taken from the collection Nightmares And Dreamscapes. However while it was initially set to shoot 18-months ago with Justin Long starring, that never happened. Then Chris Evans was said to be interested, but it appears no deal was finalised.

However the project is still alive and THR reports that Justin Long has signed up to produce and star in the movie.

The movie will bring the 1993 story up to date, with Baruchel set to play Brandon Pearson, who attempts to quit smoking, but uncovers unknown and terrifying aspects of reality that you can only see if you’re trying to kick the habit. He realises that many of those in positions of power aren’t really human, and are instead inhuman monsters.

Holland has a bit of a Stephen King pedigree, having helmed The Langoliers and Thinner, and appeared as an actor in TV mini-series The Stand. The Ten O’clock People is currently being sold at the European Film Market.

Russell Brand Up For Werner Herzog’s Vernon God Little

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

russell-brandRussell Brand’s transition to movie star hasn’t gone smoothly, with the likes of Get Him To The Greek and Arthur finding little success at the box office. However now he’s having another crack, and it’s with a director you might not have expected him to work with, Werner Herzog.

TheWrap reports Brand, Sasha Pieterse and young actor Austin Abrams (The InBetweeners) are all in talks for major roles in Herzog’s adaptation of DBC Pierre’s Booker Prize winning novel, Vernon God Little.

The Texas-set novel follows the titular teenager, who is the chief focus of scorn in a horrendous high school shooting that’s left 17 dead, including Vernon’s best friend, Jesus Navarro.

It was Jesus who was the killer, but as his final act was suicide, the mourning town needs someone to blame and so Vernon becomes the target. Fearing he’ll be roped in as an accomplice to this heinous act, Vernon hightails it to Mexico, where he hopes to find salvation on the beach in a cabin he once saw in a movie. But as he dashes across the border, the police and voracious TV news crews are on his tail.

With the book having a tone that’s described as satirical and as critical of a materialism obsessed America as it is the violent acts it believes that spawns, it’s been a tricky prospect to turn that into a film. However German-born Herzog has never been one to shy away from a tough challenge.

Abrams would play the title character, with Pieterse as the girl of Vernon’s dreams, and Brand as ‘a charming by manipulative reporter’. Andrew Birkin (Perfume) is on screenplay duties.

Russell Crowe Gets The Floating Head Treatment In A New Noah Poster

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Noah-poster3
It’s not too long until Noah hits cinemas, and to help keep interest in Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic, a new international poster for the movie has been released.

The film follows Noah (Russell Crowe), who lives on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier (the movie was largely shot in Iceland) and has to trek up a mountain every day to get to work. He is told by God to build an enormous vessel to house both his family and the animals of the world to preserve them from a flood that promises to wipe out a sin-filled world.

It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014.

Capital Games (US DVD)

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Starring: Eric Presnall, Gregor Cosgrove, Jordan Rivers
Director: Ilo Orleans
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: February 11th 2013

Author G.A. Hauser has gained a lot of fans although some may not realise this doyenne of male-gay romance novels is a woman. Capital Games is the first of her books to become a movie, with the writer onboard to produce and co-write the script with Wendell Lu.

It follows Steve Miller (Eric Presnall), an ex-LAPD cop who’s now finding success in advertising. He feels immediate rivalry with new boy Mark Richfield (Gregor Cosgrove), who it appears may have been brought in to take on the massive account Steve has been after. As a result the men get off to a fractious start, which isn’t helped when they head off for a bonding weekend with other colleagues, at which Steve seems more interested in showing what a big man he is, rather than properly leading the team. Marc Forster To Direct Martian Sci-fi Red Rising

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marc-ForsterAlthough World War Z was a success at the box office, director Marc Forster got a lot of the blame for the budget over-runs and need for reshoots that almost completely de-railed the project (there were even reports he and Brad Pitt almost completely stopped talking). It ensured he wasn’t asked back to helm the sequel, but now he’s got a new project, as Forster is attached to direct Red Rising, according to Deadline.

The movie is an adaptation of Pierce Brown’s sci-fi novel, which was published last month. The author has come up with the screenplay adaptation himself. Here’s the official description of the Mars-set book: ‘Darrow is a miner and a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he digs all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of the planet livable for future generations. Darrow has never seen the sky.

‘Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better future for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow and Reds like him are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

‘Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow joins a resistance group in order to infiltrate the ruling class and destroy society from within. He will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.’

The project is currently looking for a studio home. It’s believed to be Forster’s next film.

Evangeline Lilly in Talks For Ant-Man Female Lead

February 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Evangeline-LillyAfter being Hobbited up to the max recently, Evangeline Lilly has scored another major movie role, as she is in early talks to take the female lead in Marvel’s Ant-Man, according to THR.

It’s not been confirmed which character she will portray, although insiders have suggested that the actress is playing the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who is also the love interest of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd).

This would be a new character, as Pym didn’t have a daughter in the Marvel comic books, so it’s possible that she would be someone specifically created for the movie, or an existing character whose history has been altered. Another possibility is that she will be Janet Van Dyne, aka. The Wasp, who last October Rashida Jones was reported to be a frontrunner to play. At the time Van Dyne was described as, “a love interest and a major supporting character” in Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Cornish. Production is scheduled to begin this April.
