New Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters Trailer – Logan Lerman goes half Greek God again

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although there are some people wondering why they bothered making a sequel to Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief, it was actually a decent movie that ended up being more profitable than many gave it credit for.

Fox is hoping to build the franchise with Sea Of Monsters, which sees Logan Lerman, Alexandra Dadarrio and Brandon T. Jackson back in the world of modern day Greek gods. This time Percy Jackson (Lerman), the son of Poseidon, continues his epic journey to fulfill his destiny, as he teams with his demigod friends to retrieve the Golden Fleece, which has the power to save their home and training ground, Camp Half-Blood.

The film is due out on August 7th.

Mary Steenburgen Pipes Up For Song One, Joining Anne Hathaway

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mary-SteenburgenMary Steenburgen always adds value to a cast, and she’ll hopefully be doing that in Song One, as Deadline reports that she’s in talks to join the music-centred drama Song One, for writer-director Kate Barker-Froyland.

Anne Hathaway is already on-board to play a woman who returns home when her brother is injured and starts up a relationship with his favourite musician, James Forrester (played by Lotus Eaters star Johnny Flynn), while also coping with her family issues. Steenburgen is set to be Hathaway’s mother.

The current plan is to shoot Song One this summer, so expect it in cinemas sometime next year. Steenburgen will next be seen in Last Vegas, alongside Robert De Niro and Michael Douglas.

Johnny Depp Out Of Whitey Bulger Biopic Black Mass

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Johnny Depp was sorting out his schedule earlier this year, he decided to make Wally Johnny-DeppPfister’s Transcendence, then head to Black Mass, before going to the Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 set next January. However it now appears he has a gap in that list, as he’s currently stepped away from Black Mass over a salary dispute, according to Deadline.

Depp had been due to receive his usual $20 million asking price for the Whitey Bulger gangster biopic. However the project sold softly at Cannes, which has caused the producers to look at ways to cut costs (believed to be in the high $60 millions). They asked Depp to halve his fee, and the star has balked.

It could just be a negotiation tactic on Depp’s part, but at the moment he’s not part of the film. It’s a bit of a surprise as it’s only two weeks since Joel Edgerton signed on to the movie. He’s currently still involved, but he’ll need a new partner for the flick.

Robert Schwentke To Helm The Finest Hours

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-schwentkeDirector Robert Schwentke’s next movie, R.I.P.D., doesn’t hit cinemas for a couple of months, but he’s already got a new project, as he has signed up to direct The Finest Hours for Disney, according to THR.

The studio picked up the rights to Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias’ non-fiction book of the same name in August 2011, but it’s only now that it’s moving forward. It’s set in 1952, when a vicious Noreaster storm devastated the New England coastline, with two massive oil tankers caught in the middle. When both ships were sliced in half, the Coast Guard mounted a heroic rescue attempt to save the crew members at sea.

The Fighter screenwriters Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson wrote the adaptation, with James Whitaker and Dorothy Aufiero producing. It isn’t known when it might start shooting.

Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg To Produce Sell Out

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

seth-rogenSeth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s directorial debut, This Is the End, hits cinemas this month. Now they’ve got a new project, as TheWrap reports that they’ve have optioned Simon Rich’s four-part novella Sell Out.

At the moment Seth Rogen is not attached to star, but he will produce with Evan Goldberg through their Point Grey Pictures company. It’s possible Rogen may want to appear once the script starts coming together though.

The novella follows a fictionalised version of the author, a former writer for Saturday Night Live, as he meets his great-great-grandfather Herschel, who was preserved in pickle brine for over 100 years. The old man tries to come to grips with modern society, and his great-great-grandson’s life as a script doctor in Brooklyn.

James Weaver (The Guilt Trip, 50/50) is also producing, while Simon Rich will serve as executive producer.

Kon-Tiki Directors Espen Sandberg & Joachim Ronning Land Pirates Of The Caribbean 5

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joachim-Ronning-Espen-SandbergAfter the Oscar-nominated success of Kon-Tiki, Hollywood got very interested in filmmakers Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning. Now they’ve landed a huge gig, as they’re in negotiations to direct Pirates of the Caribbean 5, according to Deadline.

Earlier this month it was reported that the directors were among the front runners for the job, along with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman).

Johnny Depp is set to return as Captain Jack Sparrow, although no other cast members have been confirmed yet. Both Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer signed off on the directing duo, with a deal expected to be finalised quickly, so that the filmmakers can get preparations under way for a January 2014 start of principal photography.

They’ll work from a script by Jeff Nathanson (Men in Black 3, Tower Heist), although no story details have been confirmed at this time.

Joining the Pirates franchise has meant Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning have had to step away from Spectral, with Legendary already moving quickly to replace them on the supernatural thriller with commercials director Nic Mathieu.

Glenn Close Joining The Space Patrol In Guardians of the Galaxy

May 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

glenn-closeNormally the only women allowed to be in superhero movies are young, pretty ones whose job is to get into danger so that the strapping hero can come and rescue them. It’s good to hear then that Glenn Close is finalising a deal to join the cast of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, according to Deadline.

Assuming she signs on, the actress will play a leading member of the Nova Corps intergalactic space patrol, although the character’s exact identity has not been revealed. She joins a cast that includes Chris Pratt (Peter Quill), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Lee Pace (The Collector) and Ophelia Lovibond as one of The Collector’s henchmen.

James Gunn is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Chris McCoy and Nicole Perlman. Shooting is due to kick off in the UK later this year, with an August 1st 2014 release date already set.

The Numbers Station (VoD)

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: John Cusack, Malin Akerman, Liam Cunningham, Lucy Griffiths
Director: Kaspar Barfoed
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 27th 2013

The Numbers Station is available on VoD in the UK now, and will reach DVD & Blu-ray on July 1st

The success of ‘Nordic Noir’ such as The Killing and Headhunters has caused Hollywood to look towards Scandinavia for a new crops of directors to mine. Denmark’s Karspar Barfoed is one of those who’s heard the call of American film, making his English-language debut with The Numbers Station. However he certainly hasn’t jumped into the big budget realm, as it’s a relatively small-scale, claustrophobic thriller, with limited locations and much of it taking place between just two people. Behind The Candelabra Is HBO’s Biggest Original Film For 10 Years

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

behind-the-candelabra-new-slide
There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Behind The Candelabra, Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic starring Matt Damon and Michael Douglas as the pianist and his lover. However with the movie airing on HBO in the US, the only real test of its success in the States is the ratings.

It’s turned out to be a big success, with 2.4 million viewers tuning in to its premiere telecast on Sunday night, with a repeat adding another 1.1 million. No HBO Film original has garnered a larger audience since“Something the Lord Made in 2004. That means its beaten the likes of the Julianne Moore starring Sarah Palin biopic, Game Change, and The Girl, the recent movie about the making of The Birds.

It’s seen a particularly impressive as Memorial Day weekend is normally seen as a weak one for TV, but HBO has proved you can get the viewers if you have something worth watching.

Behind The Candelabra rolls out around the world over the coming months, with a UK cinema release set for June 7th.

Doctor Who: The Dalek Films (Blu-ray)

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Peter Cushing, Roberta Tovey, Roy Castle, Bernard Cribbins
Director: Gordon Flemyng
Running Time: 163 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: May 27th 2013

You could be forgiven for not knowing that in the 1960s there were two Doctor Who movies. The reason they’re slightly obscure is that they weren’t made by the BBC and aren’t considered part of the official canon – and for good reason. While they feature some familiar elements from the TV show, such as the Daleks and the police box TARDIS (in the movies it’s just TARDIS, not ‘the’ TARDIS), in other respects things are considerably changed.
