Henry Cavill In Talks To Replace Tom Cruise In The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Henry-Cavill-mariano-vivanco-1Over the weekend it was revealed that Tom Cruise had decided not to star in the film version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. With the film having been in development for years, that might have meant another long delay, but Warner Bros is moving fast to fill the hole, with Variety reporting that Henry Cavill is now in talks to take over for Cruise, although a deal is not yet set.

The film is based on the 1960s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which followed two agents from United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.), who try to stop the evil-doers from Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.).

If he signs on, Cavill will be Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn in the TV series), with Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum). Alicia Vikander is also set to star, with Guy Ritchie directing.

The hope is to get all the casting and other issues sorted as soon as possible, so that film can kick off later this summer.

Joel McHale Up To Join Eric Bana In The Thriller Beware The Night

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joel-McHaleCommunity star Joel McHale has mainly stuck to comedy when he’s dipped his toe into the movies, such as Ted and What’s Your Number?. However now he’s heading towards thriller territory, as THR reports that he’s in final talks to join Eric Bana in Beware The Night, with Sean Harris (Prometheus) also likely to sign on.

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is set to direct from a script he co-wrote with frequent writing partner Paul Harris Boardman. The movie follows a New York police officer investigating real life demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves after dark. McHale is set to be Bana’s partner, a tough, experienced cop. Harris will be the creepy antagonist, a soldier who’s possibly possessed by the devil. Olivia Munn will play Bana’s wife, and Edgar Ramirez has been cast as a Jesuit priest.

It’s not 100% clear when the movie will shoot, but it appears McHale will slot it in between A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle, a comedy co-starring Robin Williams and Lauren Graham, which he’s just filmed, and Blended, with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, which he’ll film later this summer. After that he’s headed back to the Community set for a fifth season.

Danny Huston May Take On Tim Burton’s Big Eyes

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

danny-hustonA few months ago, Tim Burton decided to leave the fantastical behind and take on the biopic Big Eyes, and now he’s filling out the cast, with THR reporting that Danny Huston is in talks to star in the film.

The movie is based on the fascinating true story of artists Margaret Keane and Walter Keane (Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz), whose bizarre paintings featuring large eyed characters were beloved across the world in the 1960s. However, Margaret later claimed she was the true artist behind all the big-eyed paintings, and that the rather pompous and self-obsessed Walter (who spoke about himself in the third person and compared himself to Rembrandt and El Greco) stole all the credit for her work.

It set off a long running dispute between the two which ended in court battles, and a rather dramatic moment in court where the judge asked both to do some painting. Walter refused to do so because of a pain in his arm, but Margaret quickly crafted one of her trademark paintings.

Huston will play a burnt-out, heavy-drinking gossip reporter.

Filming is due to kick off this summer, with Burton working from a script by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander.

Anton Corbijn Takes On Life, About James Dean & His Friend, Dennis Stock

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anton-corbijn-inside-out-slideThere have been a fair few movies about James Dean (although none that’s been a massive success), and now Control and The American director Anton Corbijn wants to add to the list, as THR reports he will helm Life, a biopic about Dean and the friendship he formed with Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock.

Stock was an up-and-coming photographer who took a gig in the early 1950s with the Magnum agency to shoot an emerging actor called James Dean. The two men soon connected, with their friendship being charted through the iconic photos taken over the course of their friendship, which included a road trip from Los Angeles to New York and Indiana. This trip occurred just before Dean became a star. A few months later, Dean died in a fatal car accident.

It’s not known whether the film will suggest Dean was bisexual, as many say he was, or whether it will straighten hilm up.

It seems a good fit for Corbijn, who’s famed as a photographer as well as directing movies and music videos.

Life is eyeing a $10-15 million budget, with filming planned for early 2014. Expect to hear about ‘cool’ young actors lining up to play Dean soon.

T.J. Miller Up For Transformers 4, Plus Two New Autobots In Car Form Revealed

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tj-millerMichael Bay is busy filling out a new human cast for the next Transformers movie, with Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Sophia Miles, Fan Bingbing and Kelsey Grammer already signed up.

Now the director has added one more actor, TJ Miller, according to THR, while two new Autobots have been revealed, in their car forms.

Miller is a stand-up who’s popped up in movies such as Cloverfield, She’s Out Of My League and How To Train Your Dragon. He’ll play the best friend of Mark Wahlberg’s character in Transformers 4.

With production kicking off on location in Monument Valley near the border of Arizona and Utah, Yahoo! Movies also has our first look at two new Autobots, in their car form – a C7 Corvette Stingray and the Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse (the latter of which costs $2.4 million!).

There’s no info on which bots these are, although I’m sure fans will have a few guesses. A June 27th, 2014 release date has already been set.

Will Sam Mendes Return To Bond After All? He’s Said To Be In Talks

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam-MendesAfter Sam Mendes said in March that he didn’t want to direct the next Bond movie, Eon started drawing up names for the follow-up to Skyfall, with a new report from Variety suggesting that Nicolas Winding Refn, Ang Lee, Shane Black, Tom Hooper, and David Yates have emerged as candidates to direct Bond 24.

However, Deadline suggests that perhaps Sam Mendes has been persuaded to return, as he’s now said to be in talks to direct the next 007 movie.

The main reason he previously turned down the offer from Eon Productions producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson is said to be his obligation to direct a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stage musical in London’s West End. However, after the immense success of Skyfall, it is believed that the producers are willing to wait for Sam Mendes to complete his commitments to the stage play before moving forward with the next Bond movie.

Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role as James Bond, with Ralph Fiennes returning as M, Naomie Harris coming back as Eve Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw returning as Q.

Josh Brolin Joins Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice

May 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

josh-brolinWith shooting scheduled to kick off this summer, Paul Thomas Anderson is busy adding to the cast of Inherent Vice. Now he’s got another name, as Josh Brolin has signed up for the film, according to Deadline.

The movie is based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel of the same name, which follows Los Angeles private detective Doc Sportello in 1969. It’s described as being, ‘Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon- private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era. In this lively yarn, Thomas Pynchon, working in an unaccustomed genre that is at once exciting and accessible, provides a classic illustration of the principle that if you can remember the sixties, you weren’t there.

‘It’s been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” except that this one usually leads to trouble.’

It isn’t know who Josh Brolin’s will play, but he joins a cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Martin Short, and Jena Malone.

John C. Reilly Rumoured For Guardians Of The Galaxy

May 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-c-reillyWhile it’s only rumour at the moment, it seems that John C. Reilly may be going into space soon, by joining the superhero movie Guardians Of The Galaxy. Hitfix says Marvel has made as offer to Reilly to play Rhomann Dey, although the actor is yet to commit, partly because, ‘if he comes aboard, it’s a big commitment’.

Rhomann Dey is described as Guardians’ version of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson from Iron Man 2, Thor and Avengers. In the movie he’ll also have a colleague, with the likes of Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman and Ken Watanabe being looked at for the part. It appears these two characters will act as the bridge between Guardians and the rest of the Marvel Universe, as they’ll act as a liaison between the Guardians and SHIELD.

However while Hitfix describes Dey as human, he isn’t in the comics, so things might be getting shaken up – although it could be that he’s like Thor, looking human but actually of alien origin.

James Gunn is directing, with shooting due to kick off in the UK later this year, with an August 1, 2014 release date set.

Fast & Furious 6 Takes $120 Million To Top The Memorial Day Box Office

May 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fast-and-furious-6-poster3Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, many box office watchers thought it would be a close race between Hangover Part III and Fast & Furious 6 as to who would come out on top. In the end, it’s the latter that streaked away, with $120 million in its first four days in US cinemas.

That’s not just the biggest start ever for the franchise, but the biggest opening in the history of Universal Studios, overtaking the $97 million Jurassic Park: The Lost World made back in the 90s. It’s certainly an impressive haul, especially for a franchise that only became a powerhouse with the last few entries.

In the end Hangover Part III slightly faltered with $63 million since its opening last Thursday. While that’s not bad at all for an R-rated comedy, it’s far below expectations, as Part II opened above $100 million in 2011. The film will still make a profit, but it’ll struggle to get close to the $586 million worldwide total of the previous Hangover movie.

The final new entry is the Fox toon Epic, which took $42.6 million. While that was only enough for fourth place (behind a strong second weekend showing for Star Trek Into Darkness), it’s more than many had expected. And with the next few weekends clear of new animated releases, it could continue to do well.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the four-day Memorial Weekend.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Fast & Furious 6 $120.0 $120.0
2 The Hangover Part III $51.2 $63.0
3 Star Trek Into Darkness $47.0 $155.8
4 Epic $42.6 $42.6
5 Iron Man 3 $24.3 $372.4
6 The Great Gatsby $17.0 $117.7
7 Mud $2.4 $15.0
8 The Croods $1.6 $179.6
9 42 $1.6 $91.4

Matt Dallas Shows Off His Belly Button (And Gay Men Worldwide Rejoice)

May 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

matt-dallas-baby-daddy2
Just before Christmas, actor Matt Dallas had a low-key coming out, tweeting that he had a new fiancé, LA musician Blue Hamilton. Recently he headed to the set of the upcoming ABC Family show, Baby Daddy, for a guest slot that will reunite him with Kyle XY co-star Jean-Luc Bilodeau.

And to remind us even more of Kyle XY, they took some shots showing off their belly buttons – but unlike on the earlier show, Dallas actually has one this time.

Dallas also recently spoke to E! Online about his upcoming wedding, saying, “We talked about it a lot and we’ve been doing lots of planning, but there’s no official date set yet.”

He says they’ll probably go outside LA for the nuptials, but there’s no intention to get too anally retentive about perfection. “We’re both like the most easy going [guys],” he said, “For us, it’s more about just having a celebration and throwing a party. Yeah, so no stressing out and getting crazy about wedding plans. You’re supposed to enjoy it. It’s supposed to be fun.”

Take a look at a pic of Dallas and Bilodeau above, and with the rest of the Baby Daddy cast below. And with that impressive v-shape he’s showing off, Matt’s certainly been working out.

Beyond The Walls Trailer – Take a look at the much praised gay-themed flick

May 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the 2013 Cannes Film Festival has just ended, way back in the mists of time (2012, to be precise), Beyond The Walls (Hors les murs) screened during the Cannes Critics week. Unfortunately though, it’s still to arrive in either the UK (except for the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival) or US, but we can take a look at the trailer and a clip, and hope it doesn’t take too long to get here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Paulo, a young pianist, meets Ilir, a double-bass player originally from Albania. It’s love at first sight. Confronted by Anka, Paulo finds himself out on the street. Despite Ilir’s misgivings, Paulo moves in with him. One day, when Paulo promises that he will love Ilir for the rest of his life, Ilir leaves the city and doesn’t return. A few days later, Paulo finds out that Ilir is in jail, and the two lovers embark on an heart-breaking relationship.’

David Lambert’s first feature is for fans of recent gay classics like Weekend and Keep The Lights On, and looks like it’ll be well worth watching. A US DVD & VoD release on August 26th has been announced. [Read more…]
