Ruby Rose Takes A Twitter Break Following Lesbian Batwoman Casting Backlash

August 13, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After it was announced last week that gender fluid actor Ruby Rose had been cast as a lesbian Batwoman in a planned TV series, both she and many other were thrilled by the news. However, others have taken issue with her casting, which has caused Rose to take a break from Twitter.

Ruby was overjoyed to have been cast, telling Jimmy Fallon last week, “I’m so thrilled. It’s a game changer. Growing up [and] watching TV, I never saw somebody that I could identify with… let alone a superhero!”

She added on Instagram, ‘The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.’

However, it didn’t take long for the social media critics to come out and perhaps surprisingly the objection wasn’t that Batwoman was going to be gay on the small screen – her alter ego Kate Kane has been gay in the comics for several years – but the Rose wasn’t gay enough to play her.

The John Wick: Chapter 2 and The Meg star decided to step back from Twitter and turned off comments on her Instagram following the backlash, saying ‘Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.’

She added that she was going to take a ‘break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects… If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.’

While some did criticise her casting, many others have leapt to her defence, pointing out that having a queer woman cast in a major role who is open about her life and the fact she is outside the gender norms is still incredibly unusual. Indeed, it should be seen as a sign of genuine progress, but in an era where some people’s first instincts are to assume they should be outraged about everything, it was inevitable there would be critics.

Rose will first be seen in crossover episodes with other ‘Arrowverse’ characters such as The Flash Supergirl and Green Arrow this December, with plans for her own series to start airing in 2019.

Lizzie Trailer – Chloë Sevigny & Kristen Stewart bring a lesbian edge to an infamous murder

August 6, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The murder of Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother became one of the most famous crimes of the 19th Century. It wasn’t just because of the ferocity of violence involved – both of them were killed by multiple ax/hatchet blows – but because it appeared a woman had committed the crimes.

Now a new film is coming that gives its own spin on the tale, with Lizzie (Chloë Sevigny) under the thumb of a brutish, controlling father, and a sapphic frisson between Borden and the household’s maid, Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart). The trailer has arrived to give us a taste of what looks like it could be a tense and intriguing LGBT-themed movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award® nominee Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry, “Big Love”) stars as Lizzie Borden, the notorious woman at the heart of one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. After a lifetime of loneliness, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit in housemaid Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart) and their secret intimacy sparks an unthinkable act. Director Craig William Macneill (The Boy (2015), “Channel Zero: Candle Cove”) explores the days leading up to the savage crimes in a dark tale of repression, exploitation and thwarted dreams.’

The movie will be in US cinemas on September 14th, 2018, with a November 26th release set for the UK. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Venom Trailer – Take a proper look at Tom Hardy’s Spidey symbiote

August 6, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Sony released a first teaser for their Venom movie in February, they probably weren’t expecting the, erm, venomous backlash they received. While their were complaints about all sorts of things, the ultimately boiled down to the fact they’d released a trailer that failed to actually show Venom.

They started to remedy that with a new trailer and poster in April, and now we get our best taste yet, which suggests this may be the twisted tale many had hoped, rather than the more sanitised Venom of Spider-man 3.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.’ The movie also stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze and Reid Scott, with Ruben Fleischer directing.

The film will be in cinemas in October. [Read more…]

New Alita: Battle Angel Trailer – James Cameron’s Manga-inspired passion-project is on its way

July 23, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a long time, James Cameron has been talking about making Alita: Battle Angel (or Battle Angel: Alita as it used to be called) but various other projects have gotten in the way. When he decided to concentrate on the world of Avatar, he gave up in directing Alita himself and passed the reins to Robert Rodriguez.

The new trailer for the movie has now arrived, which takes us into the uncanny valley with a title character who looks like she’s trapped in a Snapchat big-eye filter. It’s a bit eerie initially, but very memorable, and certainly helps tie it to its manga inspiration. It could be a spectacular one.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY), comes ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.’

Take a look at the new trailer below. The film is due in cinemas in December. [Read more…]

Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt & Ryan Phillippe Turned Down Brokeback Mountain, Says Gus Van Sant

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to imagine anyone except for Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger playing the lead roles in Brokeback Mountain, but it might have been very different. Before Ang Lee took over, Gus Van Sant was developing the film. However, he’s recently told Indiewire that one of the reasons he didn’t make the movie was how difficult it was to find someone to star.

He says “Nobody wanted to do it. I was working on it, and I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.”

It could have been a very different film with them, but before we cry ‘homophobia’ for their decision not to make the movie, Van Sant adds that he was angling to make a movie very different to what others involved were hoping for. He comments, “The original story, which was in The New Yorker, was so beautiful and simple, and Larry [McMurtry, screenwriter] had turned it into something that resembled ‘The Last Picture Show’. Which was really good if you were thinking along certain lines … I was thinking more like ‘Gerry,’ ‘Elephant,’ ‘Last Days.’ I kind of wanted to go back to the simplest view of the short story, which I couldn’t do … I didn’t really want to go and talk Larry and Diana [Ossana, producer] out of what they had created, because it was great.”

Ossana confirmed to Indiewire that those actors were approached, but was very diplomatic about why they might have turned it down, just saying, “Yes, all those young gentlemen (at the time) turned down the project, for various reasons.”

It’s also known that Mark Wahlberg was approached and turned the movie down. At the time Gyllenhaal and Ledger were up and comers, although it was still almost unheard of for a mainstream American film to cast two well-known heterosexual actors to play gay romantic leads in a movie. Indeed, it hasn’t happened that many times since.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer – Meet Jude Law’s young (& possibly more gay than billed) Dumbledore

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There was a lot of frustration expressed a few months ago when Fantastic Beasts director David Yates said that while they were introducing a young Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) in The Crimes Of Grindelwald, he wouldn’t be ‘explicitly’ gay in the film. JK Rowling rather grumpily defended the announcement, saying that they were only two movies into a five film franchise and people should just hand on. However, that didn’t satisfy those already annoyed with the fact she’d made Dumbledore gay outside the Harry Potter books, but with little in the actual stories to back that up – they felt she was once more trying to have her cake and eat it, while not actually delivering any real LGBT representation.

In the last few days Law has had his first say on the controversy, telling EW, “…as with humans, your sexuality doesn’t necessarily define you; he’s multifaceted. I suppose the question is: How is Dumbledore’s sexuality depicted in this film? What you got to remember this is only the second Fantastic Beasts film in a series and what’s brilliant about Jo’s writing is how she reveals her characters, peels them to the heart over time. You’re just getting to know Albus in this film, and there’s obviously a lot more to come. We learn a little about his past in the beginning of this film, and characters and their relationships will unfold naturally which I’m excited to reveal. But we’re not going to reveal everything all at once.”

It’s essentially as Rowling has previously said of Dumbledore being gay in the Fantastic Beasts movies, that audiences just have to ‘watch this space’. This will presumably involve a deeper unpacking of the connection between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, as we know they were teenage friends and that Albus may have fallen for Gellert (reading between the lines), but we may discover that there was more to it than that.

Now though we get a fresh look at Law in action as Dumbledore in a new trailer, which includes a very deliberate shot of Dumbledore looking into the Mirror of Erised – a mirror that shows you the thing you desire the most – and seeing Grindelwald. We are presumably meant to wonder whether he’s seeing Grindelwald because he truly want to stop him, or whether it’s because he just wants him. Following the anger earlier in the year, it’s unlikely it’s a coincidence this shot was chosen for the trailer, allowing the makers to suggest that even if Dumbledore’s sexuality won’t be ‘explicit’ in this Fantastic Beasts film, it won’t be completely ignored either. At the moment though it’s two early to tel how it will be dealt with.

Take a look at the new trailer below. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be in cinemas in November. [Read more…]

Shazam! Trailer – Zachary Levi is a more playful DC superhero

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Initially DC seemed keen to try to differentiate itself from the Marvel movie by trying to be darker and grittier. However, as that’s had mixed results, it looks like they’re preparing to have a bit more fun with Shazam! Although not a well-known character today, he was the biggest superhero of the 1940s.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

‘“Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”). Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Ron Cephas Jones (“This is Us”) as the Wizard.

Aquaman Trailer – Jason Momoa goes to war under the seas against Patrick Wilson

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After watching the Aquaman trailer it’s difficult to tell whether this is going to be ridiculously cool, or quite possibly the stupidest mega-budget movie ever made. At the moment though, I’m still hopeful for the former, not least ebcause director James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Insidious, Fast & Furious 7) has an impressive track record of making films that are far more entertaining that you might expect.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

‘The film also stars Amber Heard (“Justice League,” “Magic Mike XXL”) as Mera, a fierce warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (“Platoon,” “Spider-Man 2”) as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson (“The Conjuring” films, “Watchmen”) as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables” films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Netflix’s “The Get Down”) as the vengeful Black Manta; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” “Lion”) as Arthur’s mom, Atlanna; as well as Ludi Lin (“Power Rangers”) as Captain Murk, Atlantean Commando; and Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones,” “Green Lantern”) as Arthur’s dad, Tom Curry.

Glass Trailer – The worlds of Unbreakable and Split meet (with a super-ripped James McAvoy)

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

M. Night Shyamalan pulled another of his trademark surprises in last year’s multiple personality thriller Split, when it was revealed the whole thing was taking place in the same universe as the director’s 2000 movie, Unbreakable. Now the worlds of those two films are coming together for glass.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone, and 2016’s Split, from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.’
