Sabotage (Blu-ray Review)

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Mireille Enos, Joe Manganiello
Director: Davis Ayer
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 15th 2014 (UK)

There’s a tendency that even film reviewers fall into, which is to think that we always treat each individual film on its own merits. However sometimes it’s often not true. There can be a big problem when people go into a movie thinking it’s going to be one thing when actually it’s something else. As a result they judge it against their expectations not against the film itself.

I couldn’t help thinking about that while watching Sabotage, as many of the truly horrendous reviews the film have received are essentially bemoaning the fact they thought they were getting a ‘typical’ Arnie movie. However it’s not that, but the reviews still seem to view it through the lens of 80s Schwarzenegger. [Read more…]

Does Expendables 3 Include A Gay Action Hero Couple? The Director Says It Does

August 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

expendables-3-poster-slideThe Expendables 3 is the type of testosterone-heavy, all-guns-blazing action film that you wouldn’t expect would have much time for a gay couple – except maybe to shoot them for not being manly enough (and I’m not joking, it happened quite a lot in 1970s and 1980s films).

However many were surprised by a scene towards the ends where it’s suggested two of the movies action heroes might be more than just friends. If you don’t want to know who, stop reading now as we’re going into SPOILER ALERT mode.

The scene in question comes towards the end, when Sylvester’s Stallone’s Barney Ross is talking to Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Yin Yang (Jet Li), who’ve shown up to help save the day.

After Ross asks Yin Yang, “So, you’re working for Trench now?”, Yang and Trench lean in closer together, grinning, to which Ross responds, “You guys want to get a room?”

“We don’t need a room!” Trench replies, pulling Yang towards him so the younger man’s head is resting on his chest.

When watching the film, many weren’t sure whether the scene was just a joke, or if it was genuinely saying Jet Li and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s characters were in a relationship together.

However now the film’s director, Patrick Hughes, has stepped forward to say he thinks the characters are indeed involved. When asked by Grantland if he thinks the characters are a couple, he replied, “I believe they are.”

If correct, it would be the first time Schwarzenegger has ever played a gay character.

Indeed he’s had a bit of a mixed record on gay rights, as while he’s been seen a broadly supportive of gay people in private, during his time as Governor he vetoed same-sex marriage bills twice and it was also on his watch that Proposition 8 – which sought to put a gay marriage ban in California’s constitution – was enacted.

However since leaving office he’s conducted at least two same-sex marriages, suggesting that his opposition to gay rights was more political (he was a Republican govenor, after all) than personal.

Terminator 5 Becomes Terminator: Genisys And Gets A Logo

August 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

terminator-genisys-logoA couple of months before it started shooting, the fifth Terminator movie became known as Terminator: Genesis. Well, it turns out that was almost right, except the title isn’t quite a dictionary perfect, as it’s actually going to be Terminator: Genisys.

Arnie first let us know about this spelling alteration by putting the picture below on Instagram, which was shortly followed by the logo above on the Terminator Twitter account.

The announcement coincides with the end of shooting, which Arnie marks by saying, ‘Hasta la vista, baby. I want to thank the cast and crew of @TerminatorGenisys for a fantastic shoot. It was challenging, it was fun, and it was rewarding. From our director to the producers, from the camera team to catering, from visual effects to hair and makeup – we couldn’t have done it without you. I can’t wait to see our finished project and I know we’ll remind the fans why they fell in love with the Terminator. On July 1, 2015, I’ll be back.’

There’s no news on what Genisys itself might be, although the speculation at the moment is that it’s some kind of software related to Skynet, or that it’s the beginning of the programme that ends up creating cyborgs.

Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) directs, with Arnie starring alongside Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Matt Smith, Byung-Hun Lee, and JK Simmons.

John Boyega May Have A Choice Between Terminator: Genesis & Star Wars

March 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John-BoyegaJohn Boyega is having quite a year. The Attack The Block star is rumoured to be in contention for a major role in the new Star Wars movie, and now there’s talk that he’s being looked at for Terminator: Genesis.

THR’s Boris Kit tweeted, ‘Tidbit: John Boyega (Attack the Block) tested for #StarWars but he is also wanted for #Terminator : Genesis. The role: son of Miles Dyson.’

‘Joe Morton played Dyson, exec at Cyberdyne. If u recall, Terminator pays a visit to Dyson’s house, son is there.’

‘He [Boyega] can’t do both. He has to wait out the Star Wars game.’

If he is offered both roles, it would be one hell of a choice for the young Brit. And he certain can’t do both, as Terminator: Genesis starts shooting next month, while Star Wars: Episode VII begins production this May.

In T2 Miles Dyson is the Cyberdyne engineer who is primarily responsible for the creation of Skynet. His young son Danny was featured in a scene where the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and John Connor (Edward Furlong) visi the Dyson home. The character was also played by Phil Morris in the Fox TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It’s not known how he might fit into Genesis.

Escape Plan (Blu-ray)

March 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Caviezel, Faran Tahir, Sam Neill
Director: Mikael Hafstrom
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 17th 2014

If this was 1987, Escape Plan would have been just about the most exciting prospect any popcorn flick fan had ever heard of, but Schwarzenegger and Stallone aren’t quite the box office titans they once were. So if they’re going to make a movie together they need something worthwhile around them and unfortunately Escape Plan doesn’t quite stack up.

Stallone is Ray Breslin a security expert whose job is to get inserted into maximum security prisons and then test their security by trying to break out. He’s asked to do the same for a secret facility where the government keeps the most dangerous people on the planet, who essentially need to be disappeared. However Ray won’t be allowed the back-up of his usual team. [Read more…]

New Sabotage Red-Band Trailer – Arnie takes on the drug cartels

March 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the movies probably hasn’t been as big a success as he’s hoped, with lacklustre attendance for the likes of The Last Stand and Escape Plan. However he’ll be hoping that by returning to what looks like a bit of a lean, mean action movie, with a good director (David Ayer – Training Day, End of Watch) and a strong cast including Sam Worthington, Josh Holloway, Terrence Howard and Harold Perrineau, more people will be interested.

Now we can take a look with a red-band trailer for Sabotage.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In “Sabotage”, Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite DEA task force that takes on the world’s deadliest drug cartels. When the team successfully executes a high-stakes raid on a cartel safe house, they think their work is done – until, one-by-one, the team members mysteriously start to be eliminated. As the body count rises, everyone is a suspect.’

The movie due out March 28th in the US and May 9th in the UK. [Read more…]
