Hamlet Getting A Female-centric Reimagining With Daisy Ridley & Naomi Watts

May 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daisy-ridleyHamlet is undoubtedly one of the greatest plays ever written, but as many have noticed, the female characters are somewhat problematic from a modern perspective. That’s now getting addressed on film with a movie adaptation of Lisa Klein’s young adult novel, Ophelia.

The cast is starting to come together, with Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts in final talks for the movie, which re-imagines the story of Hamlet and takes a look at it through the female character’s eyes. The two main women are Ophelia, a young woman who is the daughter of new King Claudius’s top advisor. She starts to fall for Hamlet, who is consumed with indecision over whether to kill Claudius, who he believes murdered his father.

There’s also Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, who marries Claudius shortly after the death of her husband, resulting in scorn from her son. It eventually all goes very badly, ending in massive tragedy for pretty much everyone (most of whom are dead).

However, Klein’s novel slightly re-imagines things, bringing in new story elements, secret romances and a change to the ending to make it slightly less full of death.

New The Shallows Trailer – A shark really wants to eat Blake Lively

May 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shallows-trailer-slidePoor old sharks – they’re just hungry or curious, and we make such a fuss when they try to eat us. The latest to start whining when a large fish wants to bite her is Blake Lively in The Shallows, which has just dropped its first trailer.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘A young Woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark.’

I’m not entirely sure that when a shark is trying to eat you it makes much different if your mother died recently or not, but I’m sure it’s very important in the world of metaphor. The movie will be in cinemas in July. [Read more…]

Bad Moms Trailer – Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn want to party!

May 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bad-momsWhen you becomes a mother, do you have to give up partying, drinking and having fun? That’s essentially the question behind Bad Moms, although as it has a script from The Hangover’s Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, I think it’s fair to say they’ll come down on the side of moms being allowed to let it all hang out.

Now the first trailer for the film has arrived, which stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn as three mothers who decide they need a lot more fun in their lives. Christina Applegate is also on-board as an uptight mother who wants to put a damper on things.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Amy has a seemingly perfect life – a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However she’s over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she’s about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence – putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.’

The film is due out this summer. [Read more…]

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Trailer – (Re)Meet the heroes

May 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-2-moon-poster-slideTurtle Power is returning this summer with the release of New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which follows up the unexpectedly successful live-action movie from a couple of years ago. Now a new trailer and another poster for the movie has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael return to cinemas this summer to battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). After supervillain Shredder escapes custody, he joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and two dimwitted henchmen, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE Superstar Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly), to unleash a diabolical plan to take over the world. As the Turtles prepare to take on Shredder and his new crew, they find themselves facing an even greater evil with similar intentions: the notorious Krang.’

The film will be in UK cinemas on May 30th. [Read more…]

Paul Rudd Up For Baseball Player Turned Spy Drama, The Catcher Was a Spy

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-ruddPaul Rudd made a name for himself in comedy and more recently has been proving his action skills in the Marvel universe as Ant Man. Now he’s keen to show he’s a dab hand at drama, as Deadline reports he’s set to star in the true-life drama, The Catcher Was a Spy.

As Deadline points out, it’s a story it’s surprising hasn’t been turned into a movie before (although the likes of Warner, Miramax and HBO have tried), as Rudd will play ‘Moe Berg, an Ivy League grad and attorney who spoke nine languages, but that wasn’t the only reason he stood out among his baseball teammates when he spent 15 years as a journeyman player for such teams as the New York Robins and Chicago White Sox.

‘Their biggest worry might have been hitting a curveball; Berg doubled as a top secret spy for the OSS (a forerunner for the CIA), who helped the U.S. win the race against Germany to build the atomic bomb. Perhaps Berg was helped in his efforts to stay under the radar by the fact his skills were not going to make anyone forget about Babe Ruth. When Berg played for the Senators, teammate Dave Harris once famously said, “Moe Berg can speak twelve languages, but can’t hit any of them!”’

Ben Lewin (The Sessions) will direct from a script by Saving Private Ryan’s Robert Rodat, based on Nicholas Dawidoff’s book. It’s not known when it will shoot.

Alicia Vikander Will Be The New Lara Croft In Tomb Raider Film Reboot

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alicia-vikander-man-from-uncleWhile there was a lot of hype around Angelina Jolie playing video game character Lara Croft, neither 2001’s Tomb Raider, notr its 2003 follow-up, Cradle Of Life, found much love from audiences. However, Hollywood is convinced there’s a franchise in there and so has been busy planning a reboot.

Now it looks like they’ve found the person they want as the new Croft, Alicia Vikander, according to THR. It oddly mimics Jolie’s casting, as Angelina had just broken through with a critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning performance when she got the role of Lara, while Vikander has just broken through with the likes of Ex Machina and an Oscar-nominated performance in The Danish Girl.

Earlier reports suggest Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Daisy Ridley was being eyed to star, but it appears a formal offer never materialised, while Cara Delevigne also got close to landing the role. Roar Uthuag (The Wave) is set to direct the movie, although it’s not 100% clear when it will shoot.

Jamie Foxx In Talks For Grown-Up Puppet Movie, The Happytime Murders

May 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jamie-foxxFor quite a few years The Jim Henson Company has been working on The Happytime Murders, but despite plans to shoot in 2010 and 2012, and stars likes Katherine Heigl and Cameron Diaz linked to it at various times, the project has remained stuck in development hell. However now the grown-up puppet film looks like it may be moving forward, as Deadline reports Jamie Foxx is in early talks to star.

The basic concept of the film is that it’s set in a world where puppets are second-class citizens, but just as likely to get into booze, drugs and sex as any of their human counterparts. When the puppet cast of 1980s children’s TV show The Happytime Gang begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet (who has a drinking problem), Phil, takes the case with his former human partner, Detective Edwards (Jamie Foxx). It’s been descibed as Avenue Q meets LA Confidential, which is quite a mash-up. There’s not much love lost between the two, with Phil annoyed at Edwards’ squeaky clean, by-the-book attitude.

Jim Henson’s son Brian is set to direct the movie. It’s not clear when it will shoot, but with STX Entertainment now backing the movie, it will hopefully move forward this time. [Read more…]

Snowden Trailer – Oliver Stone directs Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the whistleblower tale

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joseph-gorden-levitt-as-edward-snowdenTo some Edward Snowden is a traitor, while to others he is a hero who blew the whistle of government spying programs. Now Oliver Stone is taking on the tale, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.’

Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage also star.

Snowden was originally due to be released at the end of last year, however it was pushed back (not a good sign) to September 2016, although there have been rumours it may get moved back again. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Richard E. Grant Is Set To Get Villainous In Wolverine 3

April 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Richard-E-GrantWhile we’ve still got a few weeks left until we get to see the next X-Men movie, Apocalypse, things are already moving fast on the next standalone Wolverine movie. The film has just added a new bad guy, as THR reports that British actor Richard E. Grant will play a ‘villainous mad-scientist type’ in the movie.

However, there’s no more info of the character than that, including whether it’s someone who’s been see in the comics or whether it’s someone brand new. Indeed, there’s been very little info at all about the plot, other than that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will reteam with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

It’s not even known whether this film will continue with the original movie timeline, or will take into account the changes that happened due to the events of Days Of Future Past. As the recent Apocalypse trailer showed us that Wolverine is set to make a surprise appearance in that movie, it may be that film which helps set up how this new standalone Wolverine movie fits into the overall mythology.

James Mangold is set to direct, with a March 2017 release set.
