The Captive Trailer – Ryan Reynolds stars in Atom Egoyan’s drama

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Atom Egoyan has been a busy man as he’s got two films due in the cinemas this year. There’s Devil’s Knot, starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, and The Captive, which stars Ryan Reynolds and it’s been announced will have its debut at Cannes.

Now a trailer for The Captive has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis, via TheFilmStage: ‘MATTHEW is driving his massive logging truck and leaves his precious daughter sleeping as he ducks into roadside washroom. When he returns she is gone.

‘In the following years, his wife TINA visits the police station where she has formed a relationship with the detective, NICOLE. Each year on CASS’s birthday, NICOLE gives TINA a report on how the search for her missing daughter is going. Lately, the police have identified the girl on the internet, but have had no success in tracking down her physical presence. CASS has aged 8 years since her disappearance. She is being held somewhere, but what is she doing there? The disturbing nature of her “broadcasts” is gradually revealed. Can CASS use these “broadcasts” to her advantage to plan her own escape?

‘THE CAPTIVE is a drama about how this kidnapping destroys two relationships—that of MATTHEW AND TINA, who blames her husband for all that has happened, as well of that of NICOLE and her co-worker JEFFREY. NICOLE AND JEFFREY work intensely with the horrors of internet child abuse crimes from day to day. Surprisingly, they find they have a good relationship despite their horrific work and are attracted to each other. They have a strong connection until the moment when Jeffrey’s obsession with work crosses an ethical line.’

The Captive should be in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

The Immigrant Trailer – Marion Cotillard finds Jeremy Renner & Joaquin Phoenix in America

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Who’d have thought it? When some immigrants got to America in the past, everything was all roses and puppies!

That certainly seems true in James Gray’s The Immigrant, which stars Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jeremy Renner, which premiered last year at Cannes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) and her sister sail to New York from their native Poland in search of a new start and the American dream. When they reach Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda (Angela Sarafyan) is ill, and the two women are separated. Ewa is released onto the mean streets of Manhattan while her sister is quarantined. Alone, with nowhere to turn and desperate to reunite with Magda, Ewa quickly falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. The arrival of Orlando (Jeremy Renner) – a dashing stage magician who is also Bruno’s cousin – restores her self-belief and hopes for a brighter future, becoming her only chance to escape the nightmare in which she finds herself.’

The film hits US cinemas in May. [Read more…]

New The Rover Trailer – Robert Pattinson & Guy Pearce go post-apocalyptic

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Things aren’t going well in Australia in The Rover, as the country has suffered a massive financial crisis that sent many heading for desert mines in the hope of finding their fortune.

Guy Pearce stars as Eric, a drifter living outside normal society. When his car is stolen by a gang of thugs, he enlists the help of Reynolds (Robert Pattinson), a gang member who was abandoned during the chaos.

Now a new trailer for the movie has arrived.

Director David Michod previously commented, “It’s like a new gold rush. Where people from all corners of the world have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals and miscreants and hustlers. The basic story is really quite elemental. You’ve got a really dark, dangerous, murderous person in Guy’s character, and in Rob’s character you have a quite troubled and damaged, but beautiful and naïve, soul.”

The movie should hit cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

First Pic From Ryan Gosling’s Directorial Debut, Lost River, Debuts

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

LOST-RIVER-pic1-1Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut went into production under the title How To Catch A Monster, but now it’s known as Lost River, and it will be making its debut at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Ahead of that comes the first picture from the film, featuring Christina Hendricks going into a rather ominous looking building.

The film has been described as being ‘Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, BILLY, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while BONES, her eighteen-year-old son, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.’

Iain De Caestecker, who co-stars in the movie told Empire last year, “There’s my character, Bones, his mother and his younger brother. There’s also a girl next door played by Saoirse Ronan, called Rat. It’s about this family living in a town called Lost River, which is perhaps a place that was once full of family and happiness and love, and is now this town that’s slowly descending into a place without any hope. This family is holding onto the foundations of their house and everything they think they need to hold onto.”

Matt Smith, Ben Mendelsohn, Barbara Steele and Eva Mendes also star.

Chris Pine May Have The Finest Hours In A Coast Guard Drama

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chris-pine-out-magazine2-slideChris Pine hasn’t had a huge amount of luck expanding his movie success beyond the Star Trek franchise. Most recently his attempt to kickstart the Jack Ryan movies faltered on its it release. However he’s certainly not giving up, with THR reporting that he’s now in talks to star in Disney’s Coast Guard drama, The Finest Hours.

Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson (The Fighter) are writing the script, which is adapted from a book by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias. The tells the true story of two oil tankers that got caught in the middle of a vicious storm off the coast of New England in 1952.

Things got so bad that the ships were split in two, with the crew members getting thrown into the sea. It was up to the Coast Guard to rescue them, even though conditions were horrifically dangerous.

Robert Schwentke was previously attached to direct last May, but when he was offered the Divergent sequel Insurgent, he decided to make that instead. Now Craig Gillespie, who’s one of Disney’s new favourites due to his work on the upcoming baseball movie Million Dollar Arm, is now set to direct.

Steven Spielberg To Helm The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara

April 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steven-SpielbergSteven Spielberg has been attached to a few things since Lincoln, but nothing that’s so come together so far (Robopocalypse came close, but then got delayed). Now the bearded one has added another possibility, as Variety reports he has signed on to produce and direct the religious drama, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara.

The film will reunite him with Lincoln and Munich screenwriter Tony Kushner, who is adapting David Kertzer book that tells the true story of a seven year old Italian-Jewish boy, who in 1858 was removed from his parents by the authority of the Papal States, who raised him as a Catholic.

He grew up to become a priest in the Augustinian order.

Kushner is apparently at the early stages of writing the script, so it’s not know if the movie will be Spielberg’s next project.

It’s possible he’ll still make Robopocalypse next, which just received a new rewrite from Steven Zaillian. The other main alternative is the historical drama Montezuma, although that project isn’t likely to be ready for production in the near future.

Guardians of the Galaxy Featurette – Behind-the-scenes with Chris Pratt and co. on the Marvel adventure

April 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marvel has had a huge amount of success building its cinematic universe, but it’s taking a slightly bigger risk with Guardians Of The Galaxy, as few non-comic fans have heard of it. And as it’s not a directly tied into the other films, they’ve not been able to set it up in the likes of Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Therefore they’ve got a bigger job ensuring audiences are excited for the outer space movie, and one way they’ve tried to do that is including a short behind-the-scenes featurette in a recent episode of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the US.

Now that featurette has shown up online so everyone can see it.

Here’s the movie’s synopsis: ‘From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

‘Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes, Issue #18 (Jan. 1969). James Gunn is the director of the film with Kevin Feige producing, and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Alan Fine and Stan Lee serve as executive producers. The story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” releases in UK cinemas on August 1, 2014.’

The Green Inferno Trailer – The jungle is a dangerous place in Eli Roth’s film

April 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Green Inferno – Trailer No. 1

Eli Roth hasn’t directed a movie since 2007’s Hostel: Part II, as he’s spent most of his time either producing or starring in other people’s films. However now he’s coming back with The Green Inferno.

Now the trailer is here ahead of the movie’s autumn release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Idealistic Justine (Lorenza Izzo) joins a group of campus radicals on a mission to disrupt the illegal clear-cutting of a Peruvian jungle, which is endangering the tranquil lives of an isolated Amazonian tribe. Armed with good intentions and the power of their cellphone cameras, the group flies to Peru and seemingly succeeds in their mission. But the activists’ celebration quickly turns to tragedy when their plane crashes in the jungle — and they find themselves on the dinner menu of the very people they were trying to protect.’

If you like cannibal movies, it looks like you’re in for a treat. If you’re into political correctness you’ll probably enjoy it less.

If I Stay Trailer – Chloe Moretz gets caught between life and death

April 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If I Stay is one of those movies that could either be fascinating or utterly dreadful, as it’s got a premise that has a lot of promise but needs careful handling.

We won’t know whether it works or not until its release later this year – it’s due out in August in the US but no UK date is currently set. However we can get a taste with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On a day that started like any other, Mia (Chloe Moretz) had everything: a loving family, an adoring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music. Suddenly, a family drive on a snowy day changes everything. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her.

‘Caught between life and death, Mia spends one critical day contemplating a future that is now more unknowable than ever. Is love enough to keep her here? Tragic but ultimately hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting and uplifting story about music, life and love.’ [Read more…]

The-Equalizer-poster1Sony has high hopes for the film version The Equalizer as while it doesn’t arrive in cinemas until September in the US (and October 10th in the UK), they’re already developing a sequel. However the first film needs to be a success before any follow-ups can go into production.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Denzel Washington, it tells the story of a former black ops commando who faked his death and is now living a quiet life and returns to action to rescue a prostitute from evil pimps; his actions cause the Russian mob to send rogue CIA agents to kill him; he battles back against overwhelming odds, defeating them and becoming “The Equalizer.”’
