Daniel Espinosa Eyed To Direct Michael Fassbender In Assassin’s Creed

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-espinosaIt’s been a while since we’ve heard much about the planned movie version of the hit videogame franchise Assassin’s Creed. The last news was that Frank Marshall was producing with Michael Fassbender attached to star. Now they may have found a director, as Twitch suggests 20th Century Fox is eyeing Daniel Espinosa to direct.

No deal has been signed, but talks are ongoing between the director and the studio. Espiona is best known in the states for Safe House and his international hit Easy Money (also known as Snabba Cash).

Assassin’s Creed follows a bartender who learns he comes from a long line of assassins. He is forced by a corporation to hunt down precious artifacts, while using a device that gives him all the skills and memories of his ancestors.

Assassin’s Creed is currently scheduled for a 2015 release, with the studio hoping to start shooting fairly soon.

Robert Zemeckis May Direct Man on Wire Adaptation With Joseph Gordon Levitt Starring

January 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Dark Knight RisesIt seems that Robert Zemeckis is hoping to To Reach For the Clouds, which is a 3D narrative remake of the hit documentary Man on Wire. The film already has someone in its sights for the lead role, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt being eyed to star, although he’s yet to be officially offered a deal.

Producer Tom Rothman has acquired the rights to the memoirs of Philippe Petit, who walked on a tightrope strung between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7, 1974. Zemeckis is planning to direct from a script he is co-writing with Christopher Browne. The director has apparently always wanted to make a feature about Petit, but it was Rothman, who’s new company TriStar Productions is focussing on high concept 3D ideas, who got him involved in this film.

The actual tightrope walk won’t be featured until towards the end of the movie, with the bulk of the film looking at on how Philippe Petit and a group of friends meticulously planned what was later called the ‘artistic crime of the century.’ It took six years from conception to execution. Eventually in 1974 they snuck up to the top of the towers to string a 450-foot cable from one building to the other, using a custom-made 26-foot balancing pole. The heist elements of the story are (inevitably) being compared to Ocean’s Eleven.

The original Man on Wire documentary, directed by James Marsh, won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2009. The feature version hops to shoot this summer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on the novel “Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins, THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PARTS 1 & 2 make up the third and fourth installments of heroine Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) journey as she leads the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. As the war that will determine the fate of Panem escalates, Katniss must decipher for herself who she can trust and what needs to be done, with everything she cares for in the balance.’

Quentin Tarantino Abandons The Hateful Eight After The Script Gets Leaked

January 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Quentin-TarantinoIn what may be the biggest case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater in recent Hollywood memory, Quentin Tarantino has revealed he’s shelved what was likely to be his next movie, The Hateful Eight, after the script leaked. Normally this would be an annoyance but wouldn’t stop a film moving forward, but for Quentin it’s enough to get him to stop working on it as a movie.

The director only recently finished the first draft of the western and was eyeing Christoph Waltz and Bruce Dern for roles in the film. The filmmaker apparently gave his script to six people, including Django Unchained executive producer Reginald Hudlin and actors Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern. It appears it got out after one of them passed it to their agent to read.

Talking to Deadline, Tarantino says, “I’m very, very depressed. I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn’t mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now. I gave it to six people, and apparently it’s gotten out today…

“I gave it to one of the producers on Django Unchained, Reggie Hudlin, and he let an agent come to his house and read it. That’s a betrayal, but not crippling because the agent didn’t end up with the script. There is an ugly maliciousness to the rest of it. I gave it to three actors: Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth. The one I know didn’t do this is Tim Roth. One of the others let their agent read it and that agent has now passed it on to everyone in Hollywood. I don’t know how these fucking agents work, but I’m not making this next. I’m going to publish it, and that’s it for now. I give it out to six people and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it. I’ll publish it. I’m done. I’ll move on to the next thing. I’ve got ten more where that came from.”

Quentin apparently suspects the leak came through Bruce Dern’s agent, although he holds nothing against the actor himself. Dern’s agency vehemently denies the claim.

There is a possibility he’s just having a hissy fit and he’ll change his mind, as he acknowledges, “I could totally change my mind, I own the fucking thing. But I can tell you, it’s not going to be the next thing I do. It’s my baby, and if the muse calls me later to do it, we’ll do it. I was thinking about the idea of maybe publishing it before I made it, but now that deal happens for sure, and I’m not doing it next. The idea was, I was going to write two scripts. I wasn’t going to shoot the Western until next winter, and I have been full of piss and vinegar about the other one. So now I’ll do that one.”

As yet we don’t know what that other one will be.

Bruce Willis Will Own An Android Filled Resort In Vice

January 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bruce-willisNowadays it’s often difficult to tell whether having Bruce Willis signed up a movie is a reason for excitement or whether it’s just notice that someone has reached his asking fee, irrespective of the quality of the movie. However Willis and Ambyr Childers have signed up to star in the sci-fi action-thriller Vice, according to Deadline.

The film is set in a future where humans can live out their fantasies at a resort known as Vice, where androids can help dream come true. The plot thickens when bot (Ambyr Childers) becomes self-aware (don’t they always in sci-fi?), threatening to destroy the organisation. Bruce Willis is playing Julian, who owns the resort.

Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore (San Andreas: 3D, Red Dawn) wrote the screenplay, although the project doesn’t have a director at the moment. They need to find someone quickly as it’s due to start shooting on March 15 in Alabama.

Sacha Baron Cohen In Talks For Alice in Wonderland 2

January 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sacha-baron-cohen-brunoIt’s not too surprising that Disney’s planned sequel to Alice In Wonderland is now going by the title Through The Looking Glass, as while Tim Burton’s movie was technically a sequel to Lewis Carroll’s original tale, Look Glass was what the author’s follow-up was called.

Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska are already set to reprise their roles of The Mad Hatter and Alice from the 2010 blockbuster Alice in Wonderland. Now Variety reports that Sacha Baron Cohen is in early negotiations to play the villain in the movie. Unfortunately though it’s now known exactly who the character will be.

James Bobin is directing from a screenplay by Alice in Wonderland writer Linda Woolverton. It’s due out May 2016.
