New 300: Rise Of An Empire Trailer Arrives – Sullivan Stapleton gets stylised & shirtless

January 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several years of delays (partly to give Frank Miller time to finish his follow-up graphic novel), 300: Rise Of An Empire is heading to cinemas in March. To help get us interested once again in the world of stylised ancient Greece, a new trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.

‘300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.’ [Read more…]

Cesar Chavez Trailer – Michael Pena takes on the civil right leader for director Diego Luna

January 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Diego Luna made his name starring in films such as Y Tu Mama Tambien and Frida, but while he still takes acting roles, in the past few years he’s spent as much time producing movies and turning his hand to directing the likes of Abel. Now he’s back behind the camera for Cesar Chavez, a biopic of the famed Latino civil rights leader, starring Michael Pena, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson and John Malkovich.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Cesar Chavez, director Diego Luna presents a powerful cinematic portrait of the legendary activist. The film stars Michael Peña (End of Watch, Lionsgate’s Academy Award-winning Crash) in the title role, along with America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, End of Watch), Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Seven Pounds) and John Malkovich (In The Line of Fire, Summit Entertainment’s Red and Red 2).

‘Chronicling the birth of a modern American movement, Cesar Chavez tells the story of the famed civil rights leader and labor organizer torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to securing a living wage for farm workers. Passionate but soft-spoken, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle to bring dignity to people. Chavez inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life who never worked on a farm to fight for social justice. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the world.’

It’s due out in the US in March. [Read more…]

Sam Rockwell Up For Indie Thriler The Eel

January 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sam-rockwellSam Rockwell has nabbed himself a new role, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up to star in the indie drama The Eel. The movie will reunite him with The Way, Way Back producers Kevin J. Walsh, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.

Roberto Bentivegna is set to write and direct the movie, the script for which ended up in The Black List in 2012, which is about an escaped convict (Rockwell) who is drawn into a corrupt sheriff’s plot to kidnap the heiress of an oil fortune, which complicates his quest for freedom.

Kevin J. Walsh commented,”Nat, Jim and I want to foster other directors and writers with this new company, and Roberto’s film gives Sam the role of a criminal on the run that reminded us of Drive and Cool Hand Luke. The Way, Way Back was also a Black List script, and that one had everyone from Alexander Payne to Thomas Bezucha and Shawn Levy in the mix but it took us eight years to core it down and take a grass roots approach to get it made, and that’s what we’re doing here. Last year’s festival was insane, the movie screened at 3, and by the time we got off the stage after the Q&A, I turned on my phone and had 500 e-mails and five offers, already at $4 million. My fiancé and my friends from Boston were here, and while I got them to the party, I went right to the condo with the financiers, CAA and WME, and we didn’t leave the condo until 6 in the morning. I woke up the filmmakers to tell them this film we’d made for $4.75 million had sold for $9.75 million domestic and $11.3 million with foreign. Given how long it took to get it made, it was an unforgettable night.”

The movie will shoot this autumn.

Ride Along Tops The US Box Office, While Jack Ryan Fails To Find An Audience

January 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ride-along-posterDespite not having the biggest marketing campaign, the Ice Cube and Kevin Hart comedy Ride Along has surprised many not just by topping the US box office, but by having the highest January opening in history. It’s $41.2 million beats out previous champ Cloverfield’s $40.1 million.

It certainly helped that Kevin Hart is extremely hot right now, especially with African-American audiences, although the movie proved to have widespread appeal (although African-Americans did make up half the audience).

It was very bad news for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, which Paramount has been eyeing as a second franchise for Chris Pine. However it wasn’t even the second highest opener of the weekend as it was beaten by the animated comedy The Nut Job, which took $20.5 million. Jack Ryan could only place fourth with $17.2 million, not helped by reviews that suggested it was a bit of a journeyman effort.

The final new entry was Devil’s Due, which tanked with $8.5 million, suggesting, as several other recent films have, that the novelty of found footage films is wearing offer and audiences now need more than just that if they’re going to show up.

Some films also got a post Oscar nomination bump, with American Hustle the biggest beneficiary as it got a 27% bump from last weekend. However the likes of August: Osage County, Gravity, 12 Years A Slave, Dallas Buyer’s Club and Captain Phillips also rose from last weekend.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 17th-19th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Ride Along $41.2 $41.2
2 Lone Survivor $23.2 $74.0
3 The Nut Job $20.5 $20.5
4 Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit $17.2 $17.2
5 Frozen $11.9 $332.6
6 American Hustle $10.6 $116.4
7 Devil’s Due $8.5 $8.5
8 August: Osage County $7.5 $18.1
9 The Wolf Of Wall Street $7.5 $90.2
10 Saving Mr. Banks $4.1 $75.3

Miles Teller May Join John Belushi Biopic As Dan Aykroyd

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Miles-TellerA few months ago the surprising news emerged that Emil Hirsch had been tapped to star in a biopic of portly funnyman John Belushi. Now we know who’ll be joining him as John Belushi, as THR reports Mile Teller has bagged the role.

Steve Conrad (The Weather Man) wrote the screenplay and is directing the biopic, which follows John Belushi’s life until his tragic death at the age of 33 from a heroin overdose. The story is said to be an allegory that illuminates the highs and lows of the American dream.

Aykroyd of course became one of Belushi’s main comedy partners, working with him on Saturday Night Live and making the likes of Blues Brother together. Dan is also one of the executive producers, so it really should be an insider view.

Hirsch actually made the announcement at a Sundance party, telling the attendees, “A shout-out to Miles Teller! We’re going to be working together soon. He’s playing Dan Aykroyd in the Belushi movie.” However Teller hasn’t yet signed on the dotted line.

New Maleficent Teaser – Angelina Jolie is getting her bad fairy on

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first teaser for Maleficent was cool, but we didn’t get a particularly great look at Angelina Jolie in the title role. Now a new teaser has arrived which shows Angie in all her bad-plastic-surgery-looking cheekbone glory.

It also attempts to tie the movie in more directly to Disney’s animated 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, letting us know this movie will be tied directly to that one, giving a different side to the tale and letting us know the tale of that film’s villain.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.’

It’s due in cinemas this May. [Read more…]

Andrew Garfield Vs. Jamie Foxx In New Amazing Spider-man 2 Posters

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-poster8
There’s been plenty of talk about multiple villains in The Amazing Spider-man 2, but the marketing is certainly selling it as a showdown between Spidey and Electro. That’s certainly true of a trio of new posters that have been released, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

The movie is due in cinemas this April.

Batman Vs. Superman Slips To From 2015 To Summer 2016

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2015 is shaping up to be one hell of a year for gargantuan movies, with the likes of Avengers 2, Star Wars VII and Jurassic World, but now one of the biggest films has slipped out of 2015 and into 2016. Warner Bros. has announced that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Batman Vs. Superman film has moved from July 17, 2015 to May 6, 2016.

man-of-steel-promo-pic1The official reason is so that it will ‘allow the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story’. There are also reports that a leg injury to Ben Affleck, who’s set to play Batman, forced a delay to the shoot by a couple of months, putting even more pressure on the film.

Snyder’s Batman Vs. Superman film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film will also reunite Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, and also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Zack Snyder will direct the film from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer.

Warner has already moved to put another movie into the July 17th, 2015 slot, which is when we’ll get Joe Wright’s as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure.

‘Gareth Edwards directs “Godzilla,” which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient,” “Cosmopolis”), and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Bryan Cranston (“Argo,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”).’
