Christoph Waltz Up For Fact-Based Thriller True Crimes

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christoph-waltzDouble Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz has signed up to star in the fact-based European thriller True Crimes. While there’s no director attached as yet, THR suggests the film may end up reuniting Waltz with Carnage helmer Roman Polanski.

The project is based on a 2008 New Yorker article by David Gann, which was about the mysterious case of Polish writer Krystian Bala, who became the prime suspect in a murder . The death had been a cold case for years, with some describing it as the perfect crime. Bala wasn’t even a suspect until he published a novel that described a murder strikingly similar to the one that had confounded local police for years, complete with details the authorities thought only the killer could know.

Waltz is set to play Polish police officer Jacek Wroblewski, who re-opens the case and is sucked into an underworld of sex rings and drugs. The tone of the story has been compared to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Brett Ratner, John Cheng and David Gerson are producing the thriller. There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Leonardo DiCaprio Set To Play Mad Monk Rasputin

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

leo-dicaprioLeonardo DiCaprio is lining himself up for what could prove a very intriguing project, as he’s attached to star in Rasputin, based on a pitch from writer Jason Dean Hall that Warner Bros. has just picked up, according to Deadline.

The film will be about the mystical Russian monk who was embraced by the Imperial Family as a medical adviser for their haemophiliac son, Tsarevich Alexei. Rasputin managed to gain considerable influence within the family, so much so that the family’s rivals tried to kill Rasputin several times before his legendary death in 1916.

There have been movies made about Rasputin before, but writer Jason Dean Hall reportedly unearthed new details about the man, which give him more ‘psychological depth’. He’s certainly an interesting figure, with come seeing him as a power-mad charlatan, while other have painted him as a good man who fell foul on the intrigues of the Russian court.

Jennifer Davisson Killoran is producing for Leonardo DiCaprio’s company Appian Way, alongside Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick and Peter Morgan. There’s no news on when the film might shoot.

Reese Witherspoon & Sofia Vergara Don’t Mess with Texas

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reese-witherspoonReese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara could make for an interesting team, so let’s hope they live up to their promise in Don’t Mess With Texas, a project that Universal Pictures just acquired after a heated bidding war, according to Deadline.

John Quaintance and David Feeney wrote the spec screenplay, which is about a female cop and a prisoner who end up on the run together in Texas, trying to outrun a group of corrupt police officers. There’s no other info, and we don’t even know if it’s a thriller or a comedy (the title suggests the latter).

Universal is putting this project on the fast track, with production to begin in March 2014. However before then they need to get a director, so hopefully that will get sorted soon.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Wanted For Quicksilver In Avengers 2

June 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aaron Johnson

Aaron Johnson

Aaron Taylor-Johnson already has the lead in the Kick-ass franchise and very nearly became Beast in X-Men: First Class. Now he’s being eyed to return to superhero territory, as TheWrap reports Marvel is eyeing him to play Quicksilver in The Avengers 2.

Last month, Joss Whedon confirmed that both Quicksilver (aka Pietro Maximoff) and his sister Scarlet Witch (aka Wanda Maximoff) will be a part of this Marvel Phase Two ensemble. Interestingly, Marvel and 20th Century Fox share the rights to these characters, whose father is Magneto from the X-Men universe. As a result Evan Peters is playing Quicksilver in director Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is currently shooting in Montreal.

Quicksilver possesses the gift of superhuman speed, while his sister Scarlet Witch can control the power of probability. It isn’t quite clear how these superhero siblings will fit into The Avengers 2, but we do know that because of the way the rights work, there’ll be no mention of Quicksilver having Megneto as his dad.

We also don’t know how interested Aaron is in joining the Marvel universe, so it may be that no deal is eventually reached. He’ll next be seen in Kick-Ass 2, and he is currently shooting Godzilla for director Gareth Edwards.

Final Man Of Steel Trailer – Few words, lots of Henry Cavill superhero action

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The marketing of Man Of Steel has gone from one extreme to the other, starting off slow, moody and contemplative, and getting increasingly bombastic until we get this trailer, which has little dialogue and is instead essentially two minutes of special effects money shots.

Looks cool though!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth.  As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do.  But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.’

It’s out on June 14th. [Read more…]

Getaway Trailer – Ethan Hawke & Selena Gomez go on a drive

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It doesn’t look like Ethan Hawke’s character is going to be having much fun in Getaway, but at least he’s got Selena Gomez along for the ride.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Getaway is the gritty, heart-pounding action thriller from Warner Bros. Pictures and Dark Castle Entertainment in which former race car driver Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Shelby Cobra Mustang, taking it and its unwitting owner (Selena Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage.’

It’s out in the US in August and currently scheduled for an early October release in the UK.

Runner Runner Trailer – Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck gamble it all

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After winning an Oscar for Argo, Ben Affleck is taking a little time off from directing as he’s just starring in Runner Runner, opposite Justin Timberlake. Not the first trailer for the movie has popped up online.

The film follows a Princeton student (Justin Timberlake) who loses his tuition due to an online gaming addiction – although he’s smart enough to work out the site he’s on is actually cheating him. He heads off to the tropical island where the site is run from to try to get his cash back, but ends up becoming the sidekick to the site’s corrupt boss (Ben Affleck).

The movie is due out in September.

Don Johnson Joins The Other Woman Opposite Cameron Diaz

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

don-johnsonDirector Nick Cassavetes has certainly built an interesting cast for The Other Woman, with Cameron Diaz set for the lead, and the likes of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Leslie Mann, Nicki Minaj and Kate Upton also set to star. Now one more interesting name has been added, as Don Johnson has signed up.

Melissa Stack’s script follows Diaz as a woman who finds out that her boyfriend (Coster-Waldau) is actually married, and that she is the “other woman” in the relationship. She teams up with his vengeful wife (Mann) in a plot to turn the tables on him.

Johnson will play Diaz’a father, a ladies’ man who frequently dates women half his age. Presumably he’ll have a few good tips on how to get back at a cheater.

The film has already started shooting and should be released next spring.

Josh Duhamel’s star has certainly been on the rise in the last few years, but no it looks like he wants to prove his acting credentials by going indie with Strings. Variety reports that he’s signed up to star in String, joining the previously cast Lucas Till and Maria Bello.

Daniel Duran is set to direct the film, which is about ‘a talented DJ, played by Till, who succumbs to the pressures of the industry and sets out to find himself on a trip to his father’s house in North Dakota. Along the way, he meets a girl who has an instant impact on his life’. Duhamel is set to play an army veteran and counsellor who treats Till’s character.

Teresa Palmer & Melissa Leo To Star In Mark Webber’s The Ever After

June 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TERESA-PALMERMark Webber is an interesting guy. He’s an actor who’s popped up in the likes of Boiler Room and Scott Pilgrim, and his first movie as a director, Explicit Ills, won the Audience Award at SXSW in 2008. However he had a tough upbringing, as he lived homeless with his mum when he was a kid.

Now he’s returning to the director’s chair for The Ever After, which Variety reports has Teresa Palmer and Melissa Leo set to star. Phoebe Tonkin, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson and Kid Cudi are also in negotiations to play supporting roles.

Webber and Palmer co-write the script, ‘is about a brutal love story that explores the depths of marriage’.

Interestingly some of the film is already in the can, as the first part was secretly filmed in Australia in February, with the shoot culminating in Los Angeles and New York through July and August.
