Billy Bob Thornton Joins Downey Jr & Duvall In The Judge

March 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

billy-bob-thorntonThe cast of The Judge is fast coming together. For a long time it was just Robert Downey Jr. attached, while they tried to get Jack Nicholson to star alongside him. However with Jack passing on the film, in the last few days they’ve added Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio and now Variety reports that Billy Bob Thornton is in talks to sign on for the film.

The Judge is about a lawyer (Downey Jr.) who reluctantly returns to his hometown after being away for decades, in order to attend his mother’s funeral. When he arrives, he discovers that his estranged and elderly judge father (Duvall) is suspected of killing her. He has to work to prove his dad’s innocence, which allows the two of them to bond in a way they never have before.

If he does sign on, Thornton will play the prosecutor brought in to try Duvall’s character. D’Onofrio is set for the role of Downey Jr’s older brother, who like his father has also been estranged from his sibling.

Oz Stays Top Of The US Box Office, While Burt Wonderstone Bombs

March 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Oz The Great And Powerful has stayed top of the US box office, adding another $42.2 million. Disney will be pleased as while major movies often drop more than 50% of their take in their second weekend, Oz eased off by just 46%.

Most box office watchers had expected The Incredible Burt Wonderstone to take the number two spot, but the film bombed ending up in third spot with just $10.3 million, which is one of the worst debuts for either Steve Carell or Jim Carrey. Many are suggesting the marketing failed to get the idea of the movie across, but as it doesn’t look like the audiences that did turn up enjoyed it a lot, it’s unlikely to have a long life at the box office.

However The Call, starring Halle Berry – which most people didn’t have much hope for – significantly exceeded expectations by taking $17 million over the weekend. It’s one of the best starts ever for a Halle Berry starrer (outside ensemble franchises like X-Men).

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of March 15th-17th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross

1 Oz The Great And Powerful $42.2 $145.0

Daniel Cudmore Returns As Colossus For X-Men: Days of Future Past

March 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

daniel-cudmoreThe casting news for X-Men: Days Of Future Past is coming thick and fast ahead of the start of shooting next month. Bryan Singer has now released a photo on Twitter of the casting wall (which you can see below), which reveals that original X-Men trilogy star Daniel Cudmore is returning as Colossus in X-Men: Days of Future Past, along with new actors Bingbing Fan and BooBoo Stewart.

Bingbing Fan is set to play Blink, a mutant with the power of teleportation, however it isn’t known who BooBoo Stewart is playing. The photo suggests there are six roles left to be cast, although it’s not clear what parts these are, or whether they’re new cast members or those returning from previous X-Men movies.

We do know that Azazel won’t be back, as Jason Flemyng has revealed he isn’t reprising his role from X-Men: First Class.

Bryan Singer is directing from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg, based on a 1980s comic book arc by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. In the comics, the mutants are being hunted and locked up in internment camps by Sentinels in an alternate future, after an important Senator is murdered by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The film is due to hit cinemas July 18th, 2014.

Theo James Gets Male Lead in Divergent, With Aaron Eckhart & More Circling

March 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Theo-JamesVarious people have been cast in Divergent, but Summit has been difficulty finding the male lead. Actors such as Alex Pettyfer and Lucas Till have auditioned and the company has looked at people of various ages, but now they’ve finally gone for a actor who’s not too well known at the moment, but whose star is certainly on the rise – Theo James.

The 26-year-old has been seen in the TV series Bedlam, and in the films The Inbetweeners Movie and Underworld: Awakening, but its his lead role in the new CBS TV drama Golden Boy that’s really got people interested in him.

Based on Veronica Roth’s novel, Divergent is a adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

James will play Four, a man with a mysterious past, who is  Tris’ intense yet charismatic instructor and one of the leaders of the Dauntless faction.

Variety adds that Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson and Aaron Eckhart are also circling roles in the movie (Teller seems set as he’s mentioned he’ll be in the movie on Twitter), but there’s no news on exactly who they might play

Neil Burger (Limitless) will direct from a script by Vanessa Taylor. It commences principal photography this April in Chicago, with a March 21st, 2014 release set.

Christian Bale Circling Moses Role In Exodus

March 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christian-baleChristian Bale must be keen on getting biblical, as while he was once attached to play Noah for Darren Aronofsky but had to drop out, Deadline reports that he’s now circling the role of Moses in Ridley Scott’s Exodus.

The film is one of two separate Moses based movies doing the rounds in Hollywood, with two separate projects brewing at both 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. At the moment Fox’s Exodus is picking up more steam, although talks with Christian Bale are still in the early stages.

The studio wants to get the project off the ground quickly, with Ridley Scott directing from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian, who rewrote the original script by Bill Collage and Adam Cooper. No story details have been released, although the title suggests it will focus on the Israelites being led out of Egypt by Moses.

Warner Bros.’ Gods and Kings is having a few more problems though, as director Steven Spielberg has decided to part ways with the Biblical project. The studio has reached out to Ang Lee (Life of Pi) to take his place, but no deals have been reached yet. The script by Stuart Hazeldine and Michael Green has been described as a Braveheart-esque rendition of Moses’ story.

The Alan Partridge Movie Teaser Trailer – Steve Coogan’s creation is going big screen

March 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Not too much has been revealed about the plot, other than that it will follow Alan trying to resurrect his flagging media career. Coogan, Neil and Rob Gibbons, Peter Baynham and Armando Iannucci wrote the film, with Declan Lowney directing. It’s currently due out in the UK on August 13th.

Tom Hooper May Take On Sacha Baron Cohen’s Freddie Mercury Biopic

March 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hooperSacha Baron Cohen may have only had a small role in Les Miserables, but director Tom Hooper must have liked working with him, as Deadline reports that they may reunite for a biopic of Freddie Mercury. Baron Cohen’s been attached to the movie for quite a long time, but the film has had a bit of revolving door of directors.

Hooper hasn’t officially signed on to direct yet, but he is apparently seriously considering it.

Peter Morgan’s script will deal with the star’s rise to fame, leading up to the classic performance at 1985’s Live Aid, and won’t cover his death from AIDS, which helped remove a lot of the stigma of the disease. It’s not known either how frank it will be about his sexuality (although you’d have to presume it won’t sweep it under the carpet) The surviving members of Queen are all involved in the movie, ensuring the use of the band’s classic songs.

Queen themselves are involved in the film having licensed their most famous tracks, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions, We Will Rock you and Another One Bites The Dust for the movie. We’ll have to see whether Hooper does end up making the film.
