Martin Campbell Gets The Fall Guy

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

He may not have had much luck with Green Lantern this year, but director Martin Campbell isn’t letting that get him down, as Deadline reports that he’s in early discussions to direct a film version of the the 1980s TV show, The Fall Guy.

It’s almost surprisingly this one hasn’t been up for a do-over before really, considering Hollywood’s love of turning pretty much every show from the 70s and 80s inro a movie. The Fall Guy originally ran from 1981 to 1986 and starred Lee Majors as a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a bounty hunter. It’s a fairly basic set-up, but hopefully they’ll be able to make something worthwhile out of it (don’t hold your breath though).

X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are writing the screenplay, with Walter F. Parkes producing.

Olivia Wilde In Talks For Burt Wonderstone

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Until last week the cast of the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone consisted of just Steve Carell, but a few days ago Jim Carrey came onboard and since then the other roles have been filling up fast, with THR reporting that Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi are both in talks for the movie, while Variety adds James Gandolfini has signed up.

The film centres on Steve Carell’s title character, a popular Las Vegas magician who gets upstaged by a hip new street performer (Carrey) with a penchant for dangerous tricks. Wonderstone then goes on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim his love of magic. Wilde is in talks to play Carell’s love interest (only a 22-year age difference there, but Hollywood has never had a problem with middle-aged men and young ladies), while Buscemi is set play Carell’s longtime friend and on-stage partner who quits the act after getting injured. Gandolfini meanwhile will be the owner of the casino where Carell’s character performs.

Sarah Silverman was also in contention for the love-interest role, but it appears they’ve decided on Wilde. Don Scardino will direct, with shooting set to begin in January.

Anthony LaPaglia Up For Django Unchained

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There’s no doubt that Tarantino has a talent for attracting great casts to his projects, and that’s certainly true of his upcoming Django Unchained, which has now added Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) to its ever more impressive roster.

Deadline reports that LaPaglia will play the leader of an Australian group who runs into freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx), just after they’ve acquired a group of slaves to turn into fighters. The main plot sees Django freed by Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter and then go on a mission to find his wife, who’s under the control of evil plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Here’s what LaPaglia had to say about Django Unchained, “It’s wildly ambitious and imaginative, deals with that subject matter in a way it hasn’t been dealt with before. The way the cast has shaped up, it’s exciting to be involved.”

He also revealed he will play the brother of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character, although scheduling issues still need to be worked out before it’s confired Gordon-Levitt will be in the movie. Production is scheduled to start in January, on location in New Orleans.

John Goodman Going Inside Llewyn Davis

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Coen Brothers are incredibly busy casting their next movie, with barely a day going by without a new name added to the list. Now Showbiz411 reports that John Goodman has joined the cast of Inside Llewyn Davis, although it isn’t known what role he will play.

The story is loosely based on the life of New York folk singer Dave van Ronk, who was a Greenwich Village staple in the 1960s. Oscar Isaac will star as the title character. Just yesterday we reported that Justin Timberlake has been offered the role of Jim, a folk singer married to Carey Mulligan’s character, Jean.

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen are directing Inside Llewyn Davis from their own script, which is partially based on Dave van Ronk’s memoir, The Mayor of MacDougal Street. Shooting is set to begin early next year.

David Tennant Playing Twins In Nativity 2

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

What’s better than one David Tennant? Well, if you’re a fan, two of him! Although 2009’s semi-improvised Nativity, starring Martin Freeman and Ashley Jensen, wasn’t the biggest hit ever, it did well enough to warrant a sequel, which recently started shooting.

Now Variety has revealed that this follow-up will see Tennant play twin primary school teachers at rival schools, each put together a Christmastime performance. One of the brothers leads a group of underachieving kids to put on a Nativity play in a national competition, while the other twin, whose always been a bit of a golden boy, is in charge of a posh school’s play.

Debbie Issitt will once more direct, with film taking place now in the Midlands and North Wales.

Albert Finney On For Bond 23?

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There have been reports Sam Mendes wants to emphasise dialgue-rich drama over action in the next Bond movie, and while it’s uncertain how much truth there is in that (probably not too much), he certainly seems to be getting a strong cast together, with the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris reportedly appearing alongside regulars Daniel Craig and Judi Dench.

Now the Daily Mail reports that Albert Finney will be joining them, playing a foreign office chief. There’s not much more info on his role than that, but then we don’t actually know much about the movie at all, other than that Bardem is going to be a villain and there’s a decent chance it could be called Skyfall.

The Bond producers are notoriously secretive, but with Mendes at the helm, you’ve got to imagine they’re planning something a little special. Either way they’ll have to start shooting fairly soon, as it’s due in UK cinemas of October 26th, 2012.

Bill Murray Signs Up For Charlie Swan

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Roman Coppola may have been busy busy as a second unit director for his father Francis, sister Sofia and friend Wes Anderson, but a decade ago it seemed he was a promising director in his own right. He released CQ in 2001, but we haven’t had anything from him since.

That’s about to change though as he’s currently making A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, and the cast has just got a whole lot better with the announcement Bill Murray has agreed to take a role in the movie. According to Variety, he’s taking an unknown role in the movie, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Patricia Arquette.

Charlie Sheen is playing the title role, a ‘a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have made him irresistible to women. When his girlfriend breaks up with him, his life swirls into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection. Through delirious fantasies involving his many failed romances, he begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with life without her.’ So nothing reflective of Sheen’s real life there then. Shooting has already begun.

Timberlake Wanted For Coens’ Next

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Coen Brothers upcoming movie, Inside Llewyn Davis may be surrounded by a little bit of mystery, but it’s certainly attracting a decent cast, with Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac already on board, and now it appears the auteur duo have offered another one of the lead roles to Justin Timberlake, according to Variety. That said, it isn’t known how interested the singer-turned-actor is.

Although we don’t a vast amount about Inside Llewyn Davis, we do know it focuses on the folk music scene in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and that the title character is loosely based on Dave Van Ronk (the film was inspired by his memoir), a folk singer who was friends with Bob Dylan, among other famous musicians.

Justin Timberlake would play the role of Jim, a folk musician married to Jean (Carey Mulligan). Drive’s Oscar Isaac will be the title character, a struggling folk musician born and bred in Queens. Despite being a talented singer and guitarist, he just can’t seem to make ends meet playing music. Shooting should start early next year, with or without Timberlake.

De Niro & Travolta On For Killing Season

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It’s not often that you get a poster for a movie at the same time the cast is announced, but that’s happened with Killing Season, which came up with the image and announcement ahead of trying to get sales at the American Film Market this week.

It’s been revealed the movie will star Robert De Niro and John Travolta, with Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider, Daredevil) directing from a script by Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman).

The film is an action movie set in the Appalachian Mountains about an American military veteran (De Niro) who has retreated to a remote cabin in the woods. When a rare visitor, a European tourist (Travolta), appears on the scene, the two men strike up an unlikely friendship. However, the visitor is actually a former Serbian soldier bent on revenge. That sets off a battle across some of America’s most forbidding landscape.

It’ll be the first time De Niro and Travolta have appeared together on-screen, and we’ll also get the joy of John chewing up a Serbian accent! Shooting it set to begin on January 16th. (Source: Variety)

Puss In Boots Purrs To The Top Of The US Box Office

October 31, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

As expected, Puss In Boots shot to the top of the US box office, taking a Halloween record of $34.0 million. That may be the best the scary holiday has ever managed, but it’s not particularly stunning for Dreamworks Animation, especially as this is a spin-off from the Shrek franchise.

It’s significantly less that any of the Shrek movies (even the first in that franchise started with a $40 million+ weekend). Likewise, more recent efforts like How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda 2 have also started well over $40 million, so this is likely to be seen as a bit of a dispappointment, especially considering it had pretty strong reviews. Dreamworks Animation will be hoping that that the film has legs over the coming weeks and will stay in cinemas at least long enough to get a boost over the forthcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

There were two other entries in the top 10, with the Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller In Time coming in at number three with $12.0 million and Johnny Depp’s The Rum Diary in fifth spot with $5.01 million. While not a great start for In Time, it wasn’t a particularly expensive movie to make, so the makers probably won’t be crying too much. However the presence of Depp alone should have dragged more people to The Rum Diary, but probably due to the fact the it’s been difficult to tell from the marketing exactly what sort of movie it is, seems to have turned people off.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of October 28th-30th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Puss In Boots $34,0 $34.0
2 Paranormal Activity 3 $18.5 $81.3
3 In Time $12.0 $12.0
4 Footloose $5.4 $38.4
5 The Rum Diary $5.01 $5.01
6 Real Steel $4.7 $73.9
7 The Three Musketeers $3.5 $14.8
8 The Ides Of March $2.7 $33.5
9 Moneyball $2.4 $67.4
10 Courageous $1.8 $27.6
