Chris Evans Joins Joon-ho Bong’s Snow Piercer

January 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although he seems very much a mainstream actor, Chris Evans has been making some interesting choices recently, such as the edgy legal drama Puncture and the upcoming gangster/serial killer flick, The Iceman. Now he’s gone for a film which is even move intriguing, as it has Joon-ho Bong (The Host, The Mother) directing and Park Chan-Wook producing.

Snow Piercer is set in a world that is completely covered in snow and ice, and follows a group of travelers trying to co-exist on a train. The project will mark Joon-ho Bong’s American directorial debut. Let’s hope that unlike some Asian directors, he doesn’t have what makes him special get sucked out by the Hollywood machine.

Joon-ho Bong will direct from his own original screenplay. Production is scheduled to begin in March. (Source: Variety)

Marcus Nispel Circling Hack/Slash

January 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Conan the Barbarian was a bit of a flop, but the director of that movie, Marcus Nispel, is now looking towards his next project, with THR reporting the Friday the 13th filmmaker has signed on to direct Hack/Slash for Relativity Media.

The project is based on the horror comic book series created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Casselli. The story centres on Cassie Hack, a young woman who epitomises the surviving female character at the end of every horror movie. Now a trained killer, she travels the country, hunting down slasher-type serial killers, along with her protector, Vlad.

Hack/Slash has seen a number of screenwriters come and go, such as Todd Lincoln, Justin Marks, and Stephen Susco. It isn’t known if Relativity will hire a new writer, or if they will work off an earlier draft, and we don’t know either when it might shoot.

Daniel Craig Gets Shirtless & Wet In First Official Skyfall Image

January 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Skyfall doesn’t hit cinema screens until October 26th, but now the first official image has been released. It doesn’t really tell us much, other than at some point 007 is going to be getting his shirt off and going for a swim. At least we know Daniel Craig’s still hitting the gym. Let’s hope though there’s more to Skyfall than swimming.

The pic was taken recently during filming at the London Four Seasons hotel.

Moonrise Kingdom Trailer

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m never sure whether I like Wes Anderson movies or not. I think it’s probably most accurate to say that I’m bemused by them. However he has a lot of devoted fans who’ll be looking forward to his next effort, Moonrise Kingdom. From this first trailer, it seems we’re back into a world of whimsy and eccentricity, with plenty of stars along for the ride, including Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing offshore, and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents. It should be in cinemas this summer.

New Pic From Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s only a few months until Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows arrives in cinemas on May 11th, and so far there hasn’t been much hype for the movie, barring a single image released a couple of months ago. However with the new year comes a new picture, via EW, featuring Johnny Depp looking impossibly young (he is playing an immortal vampire, after all) alongside Michelle Pfeiffer.

Here’s the synopsis of the film, which is based on a 1960s supernatural US soap opera: ‘In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

‘Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

‘Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.’

James Franco Set To Play Gay Artist Robert Mapplethorpe

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco needs to take a holiday or he’s going to burn himself out. It seems that every day there’s news of another project he’s linked to, and while many stars sign up for things and then drop out, Franco actually makes most of his. The lastest news is that he’s signed on to play controversial artist Robert Mapplethorpe in a new biopic, according to THR.

It’s another gay cultural icon for Franco, after Allen Ginsberg in Howl and Hart Crane in The Broken Tower. Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS at the age of 42 in 1989, was extremely controversial as his photographs often depicted acts of bondage, sadomasochism, and gay sexuality. He was also known for taking photographs of celebrities, including Andy Warhol, Richard Gere, Grace Jones, Peter Gabriel and Patti Smith. Mapplethorpe’s work often raised questions about public funding of art and the line that separates art and obscenity.

The film will be mark narrative debut of documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner. Originally the movie was being set up to star Nate Dushku, brother of Eliza, who’ve been spearheading the project, however it seems it needed a little more star power to get made. So does this mean Franco will be recreating Mapplethorpe fames photograph of himself with a whip handle up his butt?

It’s not the only movie about Mapplethorpe in the works, as Patti Smith is working on an adaptation of her memoir, Just Kids, about her the artist’s friendship before either of them became famous. There’s no news on when either movie might get made.

Five Phantom Menace 3D Posters Are Looking Good

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since the 1970s, Star Wars has been producing great posters and it’s continuing that run for the upcoming 3D release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Indeed, the posters are better than the film (although perhaps a miracle will occur and in 3D it’ll turn out it’s a masterpiece). The film’s due out February 9th, and if it does well, we’ll be getting the other movies in 3D each year until Return Of The Jedi arrives in six years time.

Elizabeth Olsen & Jack Huston Want To Kill Your Darlings

January 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago Daniel Radcliffe signed up to play gay poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill your Darlings. Now he’s got some company as Variety reports that Elizabeth Olsen, Jack Huston and Dane DeHaan have joined the movie.

The based on a true story thriller is based around how a murder at Columbia University in 1944 brought together the young writers who would spark the Beat Revolution. Elizabeth Olsen is set to play Edie Parker, the wealthy art-student girlfriend of Jack Kerouac, who will be played by Jack Huston.

Dane DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, a classmate of Ginsberg’s for whom he develops feelings. Carr was implicated in (and served time for) the murder of David Kammerer, who was found dead in Hudson River in 1944. The events surrounding the death are said to have had a massive impact on the beat circle, and tempered the idealism they had felt beforehand.

After a tricky development period, which has seen the film lose one cast (Chris Evans, Jesse Eisenberg and Ben Whishaw were once due to star), the film is due to start shooting in March, with John Krokidas directing.
