Oz The Great And Powerful (Cinema)

March 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff
Director: Sam Raimi
Running Time: 140 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 8th 2013

After much fanfare and a marketing blitz, Oz The Great And Powerful is finally here. So is it worth going down the yellow brick road on Sam Raimi’s trip to L. Frank Baum’s magical world? Are the Friends Of Oscar as good as the Friends Of Dorothy? The answer is yes, even if the film is far from perfect.

James Franco is Oscar Diggs, a Kansan sideshow magician and huckster who sells his illusions as real magic. He has an eye for the ladies and doesn’t care that’s he’s left a thousand broken hearts behind him, but things catch up to him when the circus strongman realises Oscar has been dallying with his gal. Oscar escapes in his hot air balloon (goodness knows why he was one, but he does), which then gets caught up in a twister and transports him all the way to Oz. [Read more…]

The Hangover Part III Teaser – The Wolfpack returns to Las Vegas

March 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The final part of The Hangover trilogy hits cinemas on May 24th, and now we get to take our first look at the movie with a teaser trailer. Although things start out surprisingly dour, with the boys at a funeral, things soon go far more manic, with the Wolfpack back in Las Vegas and causing plenty more mayhem.

That said, there’s not too much info on the actual plot, although we’ve been promised that while there’s no batchelor party or wedding this time around, getting the boys back to Vegas ensures carnage aplenty.

Todd Phillips once more directs, with Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Heather Graham and John Goodman starring.

After Earth Trailer – M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi is looking good

March 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The second that Avatar hit it big, everyone in Hollywood was on the lookout for new sci-fi projects. However it always takes a long time to get a huge, effects filled movie into cinemas, so it’s only now that we’re seeing the wave of new sci-fi Avatar inspired, with the likes of Oblivion and M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth. The latter looks like it’s going to be pretty good – at least if this trailer is anything to go by.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.’

The film’s due in cinemas June 7th.

New Iron Man 3 Trailer Arrives – A bit of a darker tone for Tony Stark

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not long at all until Iron Man 3 hits UK cinemas on April 25th and the US on May 3rd, so it’s time to kick the hype up a gear with an ace new trailer. It suggests a more serious tone than the first two films, with Tony Stark dropping his jokey, cocksure attitude as The Mandaring emerges and threatens to rip his life apart.

Luckily though he’s going to spice things up with a whole team of iron people!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

‘Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.’ [Read more…]

Big Gay Love Starring Jonathan Lisecki & Nicholas Brendon Launches Kickstarter Crowd-funding Campaign

March 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago we reported on the movie Big Gay Love, which was shooting at the time in LA. Now the film is in the can, but it’s not yet complete, so the filmmakers have launched a Kickstarter campaign, hoping to raise $20,000 to help edit the film, add music, sound design, color correction, and make digital prints for festivals.

They’re already nearly halfway there, but if you want to help, there’s still time and plenty of rewards on offer, depending on how much you give.

The film stars Jonathan Lisecki (writer and director of Gayby) and Nicholas Brendon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer). The Kickstarter campaign describes it as, ‘a comedy about a chubby gay man who overcomes discrimination based on his looks to find love on his own terms!

‘The devastating effect of our physique-obsessed culture is explored in the comedy Big Gay Love. In the movie, Bob (played by Jonathan Lisecki of Gayby) appears to have it all – a great job, fabulous friends, and is about to become a first time homebuyer. But his success hasn’t come without a price for Bob has become the chubby gay man everyone adores, but nobody desires. When true love does find Bob in the form of a chef named Andy (Nicholas Brendon), he doubts if the relationship could be real for his years of living in insecurity has gotten the best of him. To keep up appearances with his friends, Bob considers going under the knife to fit in and be perfect. But underneath it all he longs for something more.’

Director Ringo Le told us, “Not only is it a funny film, it’s an important film that deals with body issues in the gay community… We’re hoping to complete our goals on Kickstarter otherwise we can’t get the film out to audiences by Pride month June 2013.”

“People like me don’t usually get to play the lead in a romantic comedy,” says Jonathan Lisecki. “There’s something so nice about the script which was respectful of all human beings. It’s a touching, funny, lovely piece.”

“I’m happy to be part of an independent gay film production that gives a deeper appreciation of diversity. Our cast is amazing and it’s a wonderful story,” adds Nicholas Brendon.

Take a look at the teaser video above and then head over to Kickstarter to find out more. [Read more…]

James Franco Admits That Gay Rumours Are Partly His Fault

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Attitude_James_Franco
While those following James Franco’s career know he’s a straight man with an almost obsessive interest in all things gay, there are plenty out there who’ve assumed the fact he likes to make movies about gay people means he like a bit of man loving himself.

And in a new interview with Attitude he suggests that his public persona also adds to questions about his sexuality.

He says, “One of the things that’s very much part of my public image is the question of my sexuality,’ the 34-year-old told Attitude magazine.

“It’s not something that bothers me in the slightest. It hasn’t gone away and I get asked about it from all sides. It’s partly my doing and partly not my doing.”

If he was gay, it doesn’t sound like he’d have any problem coming out, as he thinks it’s time for a gay a-lister. “I think that the people I have known who are performers who haven’t publicly come out didn’t because they’re afraid it’ll hurt their careers. And they’re afraid they won’t be able to play straight roles anymore.

“I think the time is about right. I’m not an authority on this but if I think about it for a second…if there’s somebody that was well respected and very secure with their career, I could see it happening in a very positive way.”

The full interview is in the April issue of Attitude which hits news-stands on March 6th. (Via Pinknews)

Girl Most Likely (Imogene) Trailer – Darren Criss gets shirtless in Kristen Wiig’s latest

March 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Kristen Wiig’s latest, Girl Most Likely (aka Imogene) debuted last September at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it doesn’t reach the US until July and no UK date is currently set at all. Nevertheless we’ve now got a trailer, giving us a look at the quirky indie comedy.

Wiig plays Imogene, who stages a fake suicide in the hope of winning back her ex. However her plan works a bit too well, as everyone thinks she really was trying to kill herself and so they put her in the custody of her gambling addict mother (Annette Bening). Imogene is thrust back into a life she hoped she’d left behind, but discovers that perhaps the things she’s shunned are just what she needs.

Plus she meets Glee’s Darren Criss, who very kindly gets shirtless for us in the trailer, which certainly ensures this is worth a look. [Read more…]

Taylor Kitsch Going Gay For Ryan Murphy’s Normal Heart

March 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ryan Murphy (Glee, The New Normal) is pulling quite a cast together for his film adaptation of Larry Kramer’s acclaimed play, The Normal Heart. He’s already got Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer signed up, and now Deadline reports they’ve been joined by Taylor Kitsch, who many will be pleased to hear is gonna be playing gay. Jim Parsons, who was attached a while ago but whose participation became uncertain when the shoot was delayed, is also back on-board.

The film is about the rise of AIDS in New York’s gay community in the early-to-mid 80s. The play first debuted off-Broadway in 1985, and has enjoyed several revivals in Los Angeles, New York and London. Ruffalo is taking on the lead role of Ned Weeks, one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’.

Kitsch is set to be Bruce Niles, a closeted investment banker who becomes a prominent AIDS activist. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Shooting will start later this year for a 2014 release. Let’s hope Kitsch playing gay is as good on screen as it is in my head.

Australian Censor Bans Travis Mathew’s Gay-Themed Film I Want Your Love

February 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

i-want-your-love-slide
Last year it seemed the notorious sex-phobic Australian censors were relaxing a bit after they permitted the documentary Donkey Love to screen uncut, despite the fact it featured footage of men having real sex with animals.

However they’ve now shown their true squeamishness by banning Travis Mathews’ movie I Want Your Love, which was due to screen at LGBT film festivals in Aus this year. The movie, based on Mathews’ acclaimed short, is about a young gay artist who negotiates the difficulties of having sex with his best friend, before he leaves Los Angeles to move back to Ohio.

As with the original short, the film features real sex, which is what’s prompted the Australian Classification Board to ban it. It’s certainly not the first time they’ve got upset about the sight of an erection, previously outlawing the likes of Larry Clark’s Ken Park, Bruce LaBruce’s LA Zombie (the Melbourne Underground Film Festival defied that ban and got a $750 fine), the French movie Baise-Moi and the controversial A Serbian Film.

Some have accused the censor of anti-gay bias, as the board has approved movies with real straight sex – as long as it’s not in connected to violence – but has outlawed quite a few movies with consensual, non-violent gay sex. Indeed just last year one of Mathews’ shorts, In Their Room: Berlin, was refused permission to screen at the Mardi Gras Film Festival.

As Mathews put it on I Want Your Love’s Facebook page, ‘But bigger than the film, this is about censorship, free speech and maybe a good dose of homophobia.’ There’s also a petition been started on Change.org to get the decision overturned.

If you’re wondering about the donkey sex, that was deemed okay as it depicted a folk tradition in parts of Colombia, where young men have sex with the animals in order to prepare themselves for the real thing. However we’d love to know if the Australian Classification Board would have passed it if the men had been having sex with male donkeys.

I Want Your Love should be released on DVD in the US and UK later this year.

Argo Takes The Best Picture Oscar – See The Full List Of Winners!

February 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

argo-posterIt was undoubtedly one of the most open Oscar races for years, with the result that rather than one film sweeping the entire thing, the Academy has spread the cheer amongst a bunch of movie. The winner of the big prize was Argo, marking one of the few times the Best Picture Oscar has gone to a film whose helmer wasn’t even nominated for Best Director. Christoph Waltz took Best Supporting Actor, making it his second Tarantino film in a row to scoop him the award. And as expected, Best Supporting Actress went to Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables, in what was seen as one of the few certain categories of the night.

The Oscars spread the love in the other categories, with Skyfall winning Best Song, Brave picking up best Animated Feature and Amour getting the Best Foreign Language film. Even Anna Karenina won a gong for best Costumes.
