The Ways Of Man (DVD Review)

October 12, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Marc Garcia Coté, Oriol Pla
Director: Gemma Ferraté
Running Time: 70 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 10th 2016 (UK)

Do you like movies about one man following another man around in the woods? Well, if you do, this if your lucky day! Without any context, that’s pretty much all this slightly experimental movie is from beginning to end.

There is a little bit more to it than that though, as this is a modern reimagining of what happened to Judas Iscariot after he betrayed Jesus, and took thirty pieces of silver for doing it. Here we have a hoodie-wearing Judas, filled with angst and pain over what he’s done. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: First Night Out – Coming out can be as personal as it is public

October 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

first-night-outFor Coming Out Day, filmmakers Ian Scott McGregor and Will Mayo have released their award-winning trans-themed short film, First Night Out, online. It’s a real charmer and only a couple of minutes long, so it’s well worth a look.

In it, a trans woman is on her first night out in public, and has headed to a restaurant. She may be on her on, but it’s still an occasion she wants to mark for posterity.

It’s may only be short and the setup is pretty simple, but it’s a film with a surprising amount of ideas, from the fact that coming out is really more about becoming comfortable with yourself than it is about directly telling other people, to acknowledging that there are a variety of ways of being public about something.

Take a look at First Night Out below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Gay-Themed Film, More Than Only, Seeks Crowdfunding Help

October 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

more-than-only-slideCrowdfunding has become an increasingly popular way of finding a bit of cash to help get gay-themed movies made. Now another one has launched a Kickstarter campaign, More Than Only, which is hoping to raise at least $15,000 to help push it through post-production.

So what’s it about? Here’s the synopsis: ‘More Than Only is the story of Justin Johnson, an openly gay young man. When not under the watchful eye of his father, Justin tries to find his place in this world and someone to share it with.

‘After meeting Michael Garner, Justin resolves to do whatever it takes to win Michael’s heart. While not impressed with Justin’s antics, Michael is willing to give Justin a chance and a first date… if he can complete three impossible tasks first!

‘While Justin courts Michael, he must contend with the looming disapproval of his father – who only wants two things from Justin: “straight A’s and a straight son.”‘

The film stars Jonathan Miles, Bjorn Anderson and Beth Dodge, with Michelle Leigh writing and directing. They’ve already shot the movie, but are hoping for some more money to ensure it gets to our screens. Take a look at the crowdfunding video below and if you like what you see, head over to Kickstarter to help out. [Read more…]

Guy Ritchie to Direct Disney’s Live-Action Aladdin Movie

October 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guy-ritchieDisney is soon going to run out of classic animated movies to turn live action, as after the likes of Maleficent, Cinderella and The Jungle Book, we’ve got films such as Beauty & The Beast, Mulan and Aladdin coming. The latter now has a director, with Guy Ritchie stepping into the breach.

The Sherlock Holmes and Man From U.N.C.L.E. helmer is in talks to help develop the movie and direct, with John August (Big FIsh) writing the script. It’s not known how closely it will stick to the 1992 animated version, about a street urchin in who gets hold of a magic lamp with a genie inside that grants him three wishes. It’ll be interesting to see if they keep the genie as a shapeshifting, pop culture reference spewing comic force, or whether they turn him into something a little more sinister.

As well as the films mentioned above, Disney is also developing Jungle Book and Maleficent sequels, as well as live-action takes on The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. So they’ve certainly got a very full slate.

Looking: The Book (Book Review)

October 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey, Frankie J. Alvarez, Murray Bartlett, Raul Castillo
Director: Various
Release Date: October 2016

TV’s Looking had a slightly rough ride, getting as many detractors as fans, partly because we’d finally got a gay-themed show that took its characters seriously, but by treating its characters as flawed people, it couldn’t represent everything to everyone. And when it didn’t match up to what people’s own conception of exactly what a gay-themed show should be (who often seemed to want plaster saint gays), it got bashed. That translated into the fact it never found a huge audience, so we got two seasons of the show and a movie to wrap things up, but that’s it.

However, it has got a big enough following that it’s inspired a hardback coffee-table book, limited to 1,000 first run copies. [Read more…]

Warcraft: The Beginning (Blu-ray Review)

October 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Travis Fimmel, Paul Patton, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Ben Foster
Director: Duncan Jones
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 10th 2016 (UK)

In the last few years, Hollywood has become increasingly obsessed with the fast-growing Chinese market. Warcraft: The Beginning is ample evidence as to why that is. The movie was a massive flop in the US, grossing less than $50 million there on a $160 million budget. However, it made over $220 million in China, meaning that instead of being one of the biggest box office disasters ever, they’re now thinking of making a sequel.

The disparity between the US and China reception of this movie is a bit difficult to explain. While American audiences certainly had a lot of choice this summer, it’s a surprise a few more didn’t choose this film, as it’s quite fun. [Read more…]

Uncle Howard (NYFF Review)

October 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Howard Brookner, Aaron Brookner, William Burroughs, Jim Jarmusch, Tom DiCillo
Director: Aaron Brookner
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: NR

A couple of months ago we reviewed Howard Brookner’s acclaimed 1983 documentary, Burroughs: The Movie, and now we have a film about the man who made it. The movie comes from Howard Brookner’s nephew, Aaron, looking at Howard’s life, and how Aaron tracked down his uncle’s archive, hidden away in William Burroughs’ legendary bunker.

Howard first started making his documentary about Burroughs when he was a student, directing the film with future indie film luminaries Jim Jarmusch and Tom DiCillo as his crew. The film helped him get his name on the map, which he followed by another well received documentary in 1987, Robert Wilson and the Civil Wars, before he made his fiction debut with Bloodhounds Of Broadway, starring the likes of Matt Dillon, Jennifer Grey and Madonna. The Falls: Covenant of Grace Trailer – The story of gay Mormons RJ and Chris continues

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-falls-covenant-of-graceVery few gay-themed films get a sequel, but The Falls is now preparing for the release of its third instalment. That’s thanks to the fact the first two movies are good, and that it’s gained enough fans to help with crowdfunding to get part three made.

The first film followed Mormon missionaries RJ and Nick, who fall in love even though they know they risk being rejected by their families and thrown out of their religion. The follow-up caught up with them after they had split up and Chris had married a woman. RJ meanwhile had fully accepted his sexuality, but hadn’t accepted the end of his relationship with Chris.

So what about the third film? Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Falls: Covenant of Grace picks up one year after the events of The Falls: Testament of Love. When the Church of Latter-Day Saints makes an announcement against the baptism of children of same-sex couples, RJ calls Chris to talk about his feelings towards the matter.

‘They decide to meet in Portland for a weekend to address their Mormon faith, and discuss their relationship. Together, they must decide whether to go their separate ways, or try to build a life together despite the disapproval of the Mormon church, and their family members. If they choose to be together, can their faith still play a role in their lives? Or will the two men have to choose between God and love?’

Breaking Glass Pictures will be releasing the movie in the US soon. [Read more…]
