Michael Apted Taking Over Mavericks

November 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Normally when a director gets replaced on a project it’s because the studio doesn’t like the direction a film is going or because there have been major disagreements going on. It’s always far more unfortunate when it has to happen due to illness.

Curtis Hanson (LA Confidential) has been shooting Of Men and Mavericks in Northern California, and while it’s scheduled to wrap production early next month, a new director will be at the helm. Michael Apted is filling in for director Curtis Hanson for the last 15 days of principal photography, starting on Monday.

According to Deadline, Hanson recently experienced complications from a heart surgery, which leaves him incapable of finishing the production. It isn’t known if Michael Apted will oversee post-production as well, or when Curtis Hanson is expected to fully recover.

Of Men and Mavericks stars newcomer Jonny Weston as surfing legend Jay Moriarty, who conquered the treacherous Northern California waves known as the ‘Mavericks’. Gerard Butler is Rick ‘Frosty’ Hesson, Moriarty’s mentor, who taught him how to ride the formidable waves. The film is due out next autumn, so hopefully Hanson will recover soon and be able to have plenty of input before it gets to cinemas.

John Lithgow Up For Dog Fight

November 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Adding John Lithgow to a film’s cast is nearly always a good move, and that’s probably going to bes true of the political comedy Dog Fight, which Variety reports Lithgow has signed up to star in, although no details have been given as to what character he’ll be playing.

The movie is about two political rivals (Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis) who are competing for a Congressional seat in a small North Carolina district. Jason Sudeikis, Sarah Baker, Brian Cox, and Dylan McDermott also star.

Jay Roach is directing Dog Fight from a screenplay by Shawn Harwell and Chris Henchy. Ferrell and Galifianakis are producing alongside Adam McKay. And they’d better start filming soon, as Warner Bros. already has the comedy slated for release on August 10, 2012, ahead of the US election in the autumn.

Lord Of The Rings May be Converted To 3D

November 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

With Lion King having cleaned up at the box office and 3D version of Phantom Menace and Titanic coming early next year, there’s a lot of interest in Hollywood about whether more cash can indeed be made by taking old classics and adding an extra dimension to them. It’s not too much of a surprise then that producers are eyeing Lord Of The Rings and thinking about turning that 3D, especially with The Hobbit arriving in cinemas at the end of next year.

Now actor Elijah Wood has revealed that the producers LotRare indeed actively talking about converting the entire trilogy into 3D for new theatrical releases. He told Den Of Geek, “I think it would be cool to see. There’s talk of releasing a dimensionalised trilogy eventually. I’m okay with doing post-process 3D, as long as someone takes the time. What I’m upset about is when a movie doesn’t have the budget and the time to devote to it and they’re not fine-tuning the detail of that, because it can look really bad and cheap. But I know that they wouldn’t dimensionalise it unless it was a super meticulous process.”

The actor also made note of his frustration that Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and the prequel trilogy is being converted into 3D before the original trilogy. “I mean, Titanic’s coming out in 3D now, and Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, which means we have to wait three movies to get to the fucking good shit, it’s unbelievable, I’m like, we have to wait three years for that? You’re doing Episode I first? [frustrated squeal], what a bummer!”

Elijah Wood also talked about his cameo in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and how he got back into character as Frodo Baggins. “Before we started, I watched Fellowship again, just to remember the way that he spoke. Outside of that it was revisiting something I’d spent the better part of four years playing, and it was just a joy. It felt like a giant family reunion in a way. The weirdest thing was being on set, looking down at my feet and it just feeling oddly normal, like, ‘Here we are, doing another scene at Bag End, 10 years later.'”

Judas Kiss (DVD)

November 23, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie David, Richard Harmon, Timo Descamps, Sean Paul Lockhart
Director: J.T. Tepnapa
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 7th, 2011

If you discovered that you’d somehow managed to have sex with yourself, you’d be pretty freaked out, wouldn’t you? I would, but Zachary in Judas Kiss seems amazingly unphased by this and the other temporal peculiarities he faces, other than making a couple of irate phone calls. It’s a bit of a necessary evil in the film, as while Judas Kiss constantly fails to think through the implications of what it’s doing, the movie would stop dead in its track if it did.

Charlie David plays Zachary, a man who after a decade trying to make it as a film director and only managing to get a reputation as the best partyer in town, is now aimless and rather bitter. He reluctantly agrees to fill in as a judge for a film competition at the university he dropped out of years before. His first night back at his alma mater, he meets and sleeps with a young man (Daniel Harmon), only to discover the next day that the kid is one of the competitors he’s meant to judge. [Read more…]

New The Woman In Black Trailer – Daniel Radcliffe Gets Creepy

November 23, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The trailers we’ve had so far certainly suggest this is gonna be a creepy film and this new one way be the eeriest yet! Radcliffe plays young lawyer Arthur Kipps, who travels to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. Working alone in the old mansion, Kipps begins to uncover the town’s tragic and tortured secrets and his fears escalate when he discovers that local children have been disappearing under mysterious circumstances. Ken Watanabe Offered Akira

November 23, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Gary Oldman had been offered the role of a colonel in the planned live-action version of Akira. Now it appears he’s turned down the part (or at least a deal couldn’t be made) as Twitch reports that Ken Watanabe has been offered the part instead.

The Colonel is essentially the bad guy, who runs a series of government experiments designed to unleash latent paranormal powers that certain people possess. The movie will follow Kaneda as he tries to rescue his friend Tetsuo from those experiments.

Hopefully Watanabe will sign on, as despite the Japanese origins of the manga and anime, so far everyone rumoured for the film – including Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Keira Knightley, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter – have been resolutely white.

Watanabe is one of the few Japanese actors who’s known internationally (thanks to the likes of Last Samurai and Inception), so he’d make a welcome addition to the cast.

Jaume Collet-Serra will direct, with shooting rumoured for early next year.

New Prometheus Photos Revealed

November 23, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

We’ve still got over six months to wait until Ridley Scott’s sort-of Alien prequel, Prometheus, hits screens on June 1st, but EW has jumped in early by scoring some of the first images from the movie for their print edition. Luckily though the likes of Bloody Disgusting have scanned those pics and now we can take a look for ourselves.

Everything looks a bit glossier than it did in Alien, suggesting Ridley’s going for a different style this time around, although as the shot of the carved head shows, he’s keeping with some of the production design of the actual alien vessels.

Here’s the rather low-on-info synopsis: ‘Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.’ The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Rafe Spall, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, and Patrick Wilson.’

Rumours suggest the first trailer will also arrive fairly soon.

Ewan McGregor Joins HBO’s Corrections

November 23, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

He’s made guest appearances on the likes of ER, but now Ewan McGregor is set to take on his first regular TV show role, as he’s joined the cast of HBO’s upcoming drama The Corrections, according to EW, based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Jonathan Franzen.

The show will trace the lives of a Midwestern couple and their three adult children. Ewan McGregor will play the middle child, a Marxist academic who loses his tenure position after indulging in an affair with a student.

Noah Baumbach wrote the pilot with novelist Jonathan Franzen, and he is set to direct it as well, and will also produce the show. It was also recently revealed that HBO wants Anthony Hopkins for the series, but he decline. However with Chris Cooper and Dianne Wiest already onboard, it’s gonna be one hell of a cast even without Hopkins around. HBO is expected to debut The Corrections sometime in 2013.

Introducing The BFI’s Screen Archive UK

November 22, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you ask most people what a film archive is for, they probably think it’s about ensuring that we still have copies of movies like Blade Runner to watch even after a nuclear apocalypse. However, it’s easily argued that a more important part of their job is safeguarding the thousands upon thousand of hours of social history footage that would otherwise be left to rot, and which shows us how people have actually lived since invention of the movie camera (and not just life through a fiction filmmakers lens).

It’s not just about locking the footage away for future sociologists to see what life was like before hover cars and teleportation, but so that everyone has access to as much of them as possible. The BFI and regional film archives across the UK are working together to try and ensure everyone has access to their film heritage for free via a new cataloguing and online access drive – Search Your Film Archives – which you can find at http://unionsearch.bfi.org.uk/

To promote the initiative, three great little featurettes, full of amazing archive footage, have been released, and we’ve included them here for you to have a look at. They’re all pretty fascinating, so watch them and head over new search site to see what footage exists that was filmed near you in the past 100 years.
