The Cast & Crew Of That’s Not Us Discuss The Great Gay-Themed Movie

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thats-not-us-group-rocks-1200That’s Not Us made it onto our Top 10 LGBT-Themed Films Of 2015 after we reviewed it around the time of its UK premiere at the Raindance Film Festival. Now many more people will be able to see it, as it’s now out on DVD and VoD in the US.

To celebrate the April 19th release, we caught us with some of the cast and crew to discuss the movie, which centres on the issues that arise when three couples – one gay, one lesbian and one straight – go on a break away from the city. It was largely improvised and shot on a shoestring budget, so how did it get made, and what were the makers trying to achieve?

Can you tell us a little bit about the movie?
SARAH WHARTON (Producer, Actor (Al in the film)): Three twenty-something couples – gay, lesbian and straight – travel to a beach house to enjoy the last days of summer, but what was meant to be a fun, carefree weekend transforms into an intimate exploration of sex and commitment. Moment-to-moment, relationships are tested as tensions between the couples and friends begin to simmer. THAT’S NOT US is a romantic comedy that questions what it takes to sustain a healthy long-term partnership. While gender and sexuality may vary, the struggles to make love last do not. [Read more…]

Memories Of A Penitent Heart (Tribeca Review)

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Director: Cecilia Aldarondo
Running Time: 74 mins
Certificate: NR (US)
Release Date: April 16th 2016 (Tribeca Film Festival World Premiere)

Filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo certainly didn’t give herself an easy task when she set out to make Memories Of A Penitent Heart, as it involves her delving into one of the most difficult and painful chapters of her family’s history. 25 years before, her uncle Miguel died, with her grandmother insisting it was cancer, although it was almost certainly of AIDS (although interestingly Miguel himself was never tested, due to his beliefs about how people with the disease were being treated and stigmatised).

Miguel was gay, and had moved from Puerto Rico to New York to become an actor, shunning his staunch, Catholic upbringing to live authentically as himself, no matter what his family thought – even going as far as to change his name to the anglicised Michael. He’d also gotten into a relationship with a man called Robert. It is finding Robert that becomes Cecilia’s route into the story, as due to the strained (to put it mildly) relationship between Robert and Miguel’s family, they don’t know what happened to him or even his surname. Grace & Frankie – Season 1 (DVD Review)

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston
Director: Various
Running Time: 378 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 18th 2016 (UK)

When it was announced that Netflix was reuniting 9 to 5 co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for a new online series, it was difficult to see how it could be anything but good. Indeed, the only downside was the lack of Dolly Parton. However, the series itself, Grace & Frankie, turned out to be better than we could have hoped, giving both Tomlin and Fonda plenty of space to show off their talents, while also telling a fun and timely story.

Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) are longtime frenemies, whose different outlooks on life – one a rather high-strung retired businesswoman the other a bit of an earth mother – have meant that the only thing that’s held them together is the fact their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) are longtime friends and business partners. Or at least that’s what the women think, until their hubbies sit them down to explain that actually they’re gay and in love with each other, and plan to move out so they can be together. Tootsie (Criterion Collection) (Blu-ray Review)

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Bill Murray
Director: Sydney Pollack
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 16th 2016 (UK)

In the 21st Century films about ‘men in dresses’ can seem rather backward and awkward, especially if the vast majority of the humour is about the supposed hilarity or men doing things that are stereotypically ‘women’s’ jobs, and the ‘emasculation’ of putting on a skirt. However, Tootsie is slightly different and in some ways its take on gender roles seems even more relevant now than when it was made.

The film is surprisingly careful not to make the joke that it’s Dustin Hoffman pretending to be a woman, instead ensuring the humour comes from his character’s negotiation of his own assumptions about gender roles. While it is about a guy learning to be a better man by becoming a woman (and therefore the focus is on the male), its viewpoint is very much on the side of women and how society has marginalised them, often without actively thinking about what it’s doing. What he does is essentially to exploit womanhood, but in doing so he learns things about the world around him he’d never realised. [Read more…]

Grey Gardens (Criterion Collection) (Blu-ray Review)

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Edith Bouvier Beale, Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale
Director: Ellen Hovde, Albert Maysles
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 18th 2016 (UK)

A lot of movies that have been given the ‘cult film’ label are really nothing of the sort, but Grey Gardens is almost the definition of a cult phenomenon. 90% of the population have no idea what it is, but when you find somebody who does, it’s almost like you’ve discovered someone else who’s part of a secret club. Now it’s got a new Blu-ray release as one of the first Criterion Collection Blu-rays to be released in the UK.

Criterion has taken a long time jumping across the pond, as it’s been going in the US since the era of laserdiscs in the 1980s. However, now hopefully Britain will be able to get a taste of the collection, which is known for its attention to detail, intricate restorations and remastering, and good special features. Gay Short Film Showcase: Weird Things Gay Couples Do – Public Vs. Private

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

weird-things-gay-couples-doDo you act differently with your boyfriend in private than you do in public (well, I presume you do in some respects, because certain bedroom activities will get you arrested if you do them in public)? If you do, then you’ll probably enjoy a fun new video from Buzzfeed Yellow, which compares a gay couple when they’re out and when they’re at home.

Some of the things it picks up on apply to many couples irrespective of their sexuality, such as the cosy, schlubby domesticity at home compared to the more formal front they show while they’re out (even if that front is a little gay). Others are more gay specific, such as worries about public displays of affection.

It certainly makes to a fun video, with a cute couple and some smile-inducing observations. Take a look at the video below.

Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson & Jon Bass Get Shirtless In The Latest Baywatch Pic

April 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

baywatch-shirtlessWith the upcoming Baywatch movie, Zac Efron should be able to take his love of shirtlessness to new levels, as he’s pretty much got an excuse to be topless for the entire running time. Although he’ll probably cover up at some point, he certainly hasn’t in a new pic and neither have Dwayne Johnson and Jon Bass.

Indeed, it’s a shot with a bit of something for everyone, with Bass there for those who like a little more meat on the bone, Johnson representing those who are a little older and/or love bodybuilding, while Efron’s there for fans of ridiculous definition and some light chest fur.

Johnson, who almost seems to be the movie’s official publicist, posted the pic on his Instagram, along with the message, ‘Boys of #BAYWATCH are some bad ass dudes. We have a lot of cool things in our movie. Rated R comedy, hard core action, beautiful ass kicking women, the unforgiving and majestic ocean, Zac’s 17 pack abs, and most important our #1 secret weapon… @thejonbass.

‘Underneath this layer of oiled up sex god is an extremely talented dude, 100% comfortable in his own skin and truthfully, Jon Bass just may wind up being my absolute favorite part of our movie.

We are the boys of #BAYWATCH. And we are some bad muthaf*ckas. #Zacs17PackAbs #JonsBadAssery #AndMyAbilityToBounceCantaloupesOffMyPecs #BAYWATCH MAY 19th, 2017.’ [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: The Sexy Kings Cross Steelers Gay-Inclusive Rugby Team Strip Down

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

meat-kings-cross-steelers1There is no doubt that a lot of rugby players are hot, and that’s certainly true of the gay-inclusive Kings Cross Steelers, who’ve marked their 20th Anniversary with a sexy new book, Meat, published by indie magazine Meat. 29 of the club’s 200 members were photographed by Adrian Lourie for the tome.

Part of the mission behind the book is to show images of sexy gay men that go beyond stereotypical images muscled model-types or almost jailbait twinks. Meat founder Lourie comments that he was “tired of the body shaming that goes on within the gay community,” and hopes to “celebrate the bodies of ‘ordinary’ gay men.”

Alex Smith, Chairman of the Kings Cross Steelers comments: “Despite so much progress over the last 20 years, it can still be very difficult to be an out gay man, made even more so by a lot of unhelpful noise around how to be, act or look within the community. That’s why I’m proud that the Kings Cross Steelers have partnered with Meat to help show that anyone can be a pin-up by simply being yourself. For two decades, our club has helped hundreds of men – big, small, gay or straight – realize the great maxim about rugby: that it is a game for people of all shapes and sizes – truly a sport for everyone.”

The guys are certainly looking good, even if they (thankfully) don’t look like they’ve modelled themselves of Ancient Greek statues. Take a look at some pics and teaser videos below. You can buy a copy from meatzine.com. (And thanks to GT for the tip) [Read more…]

McTucky Fried High Season 2 Trailer – The animated school of LGBTQ food is coming back

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

McTucky-Fried-High-s2-slideAn animated web series about a high school where all the students are different kinds of food, many of whom are queer, sounds a bit too kooky to be all that good. However, with its first season McTucky Fried High proved that not only could it be entertaining and fun, but could also make some very relevant point.

Now, after looking for funding a few months ago, it’s coming back with Season 2, and the trailer has arrived. Season 2 premieres June 6th, 2016, running for 7 episodes, with the season finale on July 18th, 2016. Season 1 received the Critic’s Choice Award at Shorts Showcase – Palm Springs 2016, has over 56,000 views on YouTube, screened at film festivals around the world and received plenty of praise.

The show is McTucky Fried High stands one of the only LGBTQ animated cartoons out there, and promised that, ‘Season 2 uses humor to tackle religion, racism, feminism, and STD’s while foregrounding and affirming LGBTQ characters and experiences. McTucky Fried High is leading the way with cartoons like Steven Universe, the Legend of Korra, and Gen Zed featuring specifically LGBTQ characters and story lines.

‘Creator, Director and Executive Producer Robert-Carnilius uses his own life, creative passions and community involvement in hopes of generating an entertaining, insightful and humorous cartoon. The McTucky Fried High cast and crew are also comprised predominantly of LGBTQ people and people of color, going beyond visibility by using personal empowerment to shape and create media that has a personal, political and artistic impact.’

Take a look at the trailer below. You can check out Season 1 over at the show’s website. [Read more…]

King Cobra Director Says The Actors Took Gay Sex Beyond The Script, Plus A New Clip

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

king-cobra-slide2Last week the first clip from King Cobra debuted, giving us a brief taste of the James Franco produced (and starring), based on a true story of murder in the gay porn industry. Now director Justin Kelly has been talking about the film, which premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival, and has suggested his actors weren’t shy when it came to the sex scene.

He told TheWrap, “We wanted to make it as unapologetic as possible. I didn’t have a desire to shock – it’s a part of the story. Myself and the actors discussed from day one that you can’t shy away.”

It appears the performers took that to heart, as Kelly adds, ‘“A few times, the actors took things further than the script.”

‘He referenced an early scene in which Slater’s middle-aged character wants to sample the goods of his barely legal young star, played by Clayton. “Please, make me feel wanted,” he says as he half begs and half forces himself on the young man.

‘In the script, the encounter “was far more mild, just kissing on the couch,” Kelly said. “But they decided it had to go further. Christian takes him up against the closet. That is what would have happened.”’

The film is about how porn actors Harlow Raymond Cuadra and Joseph Manuel Kerekes (Keegan Allen and James Franco) savagely killed porn producer and head of Cobra Video, Bryan Kocis (Christian SLater). They thought by doing so they’d be able to make it big behind-the-scenes of the porn world, and lure breakout porn star Brent Corrigan (Garrett Clayton) to work for them in order to make a massively successful movie.

Kelly was well aware that the subject matter could make it difficult to get a fair rating from the MPAA, saying, especially if he did want to be unapologetic about gay sex, saying,“It’s a complete fact that graphic gay male sex will get you an NC-17 rating. Straight men can [appear] completely naked and be choking a woman, and that’s PG-13. There are crazy rape scenes that get by, it’s mind-blowing.”

A new clip from the movie has also debuted, featuring Franco and Allen working up a sweat, which you can take a look at below. [Read more…]

Equals Trailer – Nicholas Hoult & Kristen Stewart aren’t allowed to fall in love

April 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Equals-slide2It’s forbidden love time for Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart in a dystopian future. Indeed, they’re not even meant to be able to fall in love in Equals, which has just released its full trailer.

In the film, Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart live in a gloomy, sterile world, where emotion has been outlawed and is virtually non-existent. However, the human spirit won’t take that lying down, and some people get a disease known as ‘Switched On Syndrome’, where they begin to have feelings. As a result, Hoult and Stewart start to fall in love.

Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, Bel Powley, Kate Lyn Sheil, and Claudia Kim also start, with a summer release expected. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
