Yves Saint Laurent Trailer – New biopic looks at the designer and his male partner

November 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Like quite a few top designers, Yves Saint Laurent is a household name, but not that many people know anything about the man himself. Now a new French biopic, named after its subject, is coming to illuminate us of the life and love of the gay couturier.

The movie follows the man who at the astonishingly young age of 21 became the head designer of the House of Christian Dior S.A., with his first collection credited by many with saving the company. Around the same time he met Pierre Berge, who became his lover and business partner. They launched the YSL fashion house together in 1961, running it for several decades. They split in 1976, but remained close for the rest of Saint Laurent’s life, entering a civil partnership together just before the designer died in 2008.

Pierre Niney plays Laurent, with Guillaume Gallienne as Berge. Jalil Lespert directs.

This is actually one of two biopics of the designer likely to be released next year. While the one above has the official backing of Berge, the other has a more high-profile French cast, including Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal), Louis Garrel (The Dreamers), Jérémie Renier (In Bruges) and Lea Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds). First Teaser For HBO’s New Gay Series, Looking, Starring Jonathan Groff & Russell Tovey

November 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

There’s been a lot of interest in HBO’s new gay-centric show, Looking, with many intrigued by what the network that first aired the likes of True Blood and Six Feet Under would bring us. Now the first promo has arrived, and while brief it does give us flashing looks at the likes of Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey, Frankie Alvarez, Murray Bartlett and Scott Bakula.

The show is said to be a mix of Tales From The City and Girls, following mainly gay men in San Francisco. Groff plays Patrick, who’s professionally very successful as a video game developer, but his personal life is a bit of a disaster area. Frankie Alvarez is Patrick’s best friend, Augustin, whose ego and feisty politics make it difficult for him to settle down with a boyfriend.

The show is set to begin airing in the US on January 19th, 2014, and should spread to other parts of the globe soon afterwards.

New Lone Survivor Trailer – Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster & Taylor Kitsch turn Navy Seals

November 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lone Survivor is already building a bit of Oscar buzz, and it’ll be interesting to see whether it can build that in the run up to Awards season.

The movie is based on a failed 2005 mission, Operation Red Wing, which tasked four members of SEAL Team 10 (Wahlberg, Hirsch, Foster, Kitsch) to kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. However they were quickly compromised and came under attack. As the title suggests, it didn’t go well. It stars Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, Eric Bana, Emile Hirsch and Alexander Ludwig.

Universal have slotted it in for a prime Oscar push, with a limited US release around Christmas before it goes wide next January. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

World Of Warcraft Adaptation Concept Art Show Up Online

November 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a few false starts, a World Of Warcraft movie is on its way, and to prove it really is gonna get made this time (probably), director Duncan Jones and visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer turned up to BlizzCon 2013 to showcase the video game adaptation.

They also showed off four concept art images, featuring Draenor, home of the Orcs; Dalaran, the magical city floating in the sky; Ironforge, the Dwarfs’ home city; and Stormwind, seat of the Alliance. It seems they’re keen to keep relatively close to the feel of the game, although with much better graphics. You can see them above and below.

During the Q&A session, director Duncan Jones revealed that an early version of the script focused heavily on the humans, but said that’s it now more balanced, “It’s about both sides. It’s going to be red and blue.” He also revealed the story focusses on the battle between the human Anduin Lothar and the Orc Durotan, focusing largely on the Eastern kingdoms of Azeroth.

While no cast members have been confirmed yet, Travis Fimmel has reportedly been offered a leading role, with Colin Farrell and Paula Patton also in talks. It’s believed it will start shooting this January in Canada.

Dan Stevens Bringing Sir Lancelot To Life In Night at the Museum 3

November 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dan-StevensThe Night At The Museum franchise is coming to the UK, and as a result it needs a few British actors. Now it’s got one in the form of former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens, whose star is certainly on the rise.

Ben Stiller is set to reprise his role as night security guard Larry Daley, with Robin Williams also coming back as Teddy Roosevelt. This time, it turns out the it’s not just US museum exhibits that can come to life at night, as Larry and Teddy end up in action in London. Dan Stevens will be Sir Lancelot, who is apparently the main villain in this new adventure.

Shawn Levy returns to direct, from a script by franchise scribes Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant. Night At The Museum 3 is currently due for release on December 25th, 2014. (Source: Variety)

Thor: The Dark World Tops The US Box Office With $86.1 Million

November 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

thor-the-dark-world-uk-quadThere was no doubt that Thor: The Dark World would top the US box office this weekend, with the only question being how big its opening would be. The first film took $65 million in its opening three days, but The Dark World got an Avengers boost, taking $86 million on its debut.

It’s a great start for the film, especially as there were still some naysayers who wondered whether the character could live on and be a success outside the Avengers franchise. Thor has now proved he can.

The Dark World was the only new opener in the top 10, although Richard Curtis’s About Time made it’s first appearance on the list, moving from 13th to 9th place with $5.1 million, thanks to addition of an extra 1,000 screens.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 8th-10th.

The Great Gatsby (DVD)

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Debicki, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton
Director: Baz Luhrmann
Running Time: 136 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 11th 2013

When it was first announced that Warner Bros. was making a $100+ million version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, many wondered why on earth they would spend so much on a literary adaptation – which aren’t traditionally massive box office successes – even if it was directed by Baz Luhrmann. There was some logic to it though. First is that Luhrmann has had huge success taking the historical and turning it into profitable spectacle with the likes of Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Secondly it attracted big names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. [Read more…]

Pacific Rim (Blu-ray)

November 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, Charlie Day
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Running Time: 131 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 11th 2013

There’s a saying in Hollywood that if a film is bad critics blame the screenwriter, but if it’s good, it’s the director who gets the credit. There’s a certain amount of truth in that, and it’s something that would be easy to do with Pacific Rim. The action scenes are terrific, it looks amazing and the world building is impressive, but the characters feel a bit like action figures.

The problem is that the film tries to create archetypes more than people – the hero with something to overcome, the damaged love interest, the grizzled commander, the arrogant  colleague who’s convinced the hero with fail. It’s a common tactic with big tentpole films, and writers Guillermo Del Toro and Travis Beachman have certainly been thumbing through their copies of Joseph Campbell’s Hero With A Thousand Faces to try and understand the archetypes they need to fulfil the hero’s journey – from being reluctantly called to action, to a flirtation with resurrection – however the result is characters that don’t feel quite real.
