I Spit On Your Grave 2 (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jemma Dallender, Yavor Baharov, Joe Absolom, Aleksandar Aleksiev, Mary Stockley
Director: Steven R. Monroe
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 7th 2013

Talking about lazy titling. Rather than I Spit On Your Grave 2, couldn’t it have been I Piss On You Grave, I Take A Dump On Your Grave or I Leave The Rotting Corpses Of Dead Woodland Animals On You Grave? In fact it could have had a completely different title altogether, as except for having a similar premise, it’s not really linked to the first film (which itself was a remake of Meir Zarchi’s 1978 cult flick) at all. Breathe In (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan, Mackenzie Davis
Director: Drake Doremus
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 7th 2013

I loved Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy, which managed the rare feat of making a love story feel fresh, real, new and passionate. I had high hope for Breathe In, but unfortunately while there are some things to admire, the overall feeling is that the film is slightly tedious and contrived.

Sophie (Felicity Jones) is a foreign exchange student who arrives in upstate New York to stay with Keith (Guy Pearce), his wife Megan (Amy Ryan) and daughter Lauren (Mackenzie Davis). Keith and Sophie share a love of music, and slowly their musical connection develop into feelings for one another, but neither is sure whether they should act upon them. [Read more…]

The Iceman (DVD)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, David Schwimmer
Director: Ariel Vromen
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 30th 2013

The Iceman is a textbook case of how to take a fascinating true story and make it far duller than it actually ought to be. It can’t quite decide whether it wants to ditch the facts and just be a rollicking story or stick close to the truth in order go deep into reality – and its indecision results in a film that doesn’t seem to know quite what it’s for, other than killing a lot of people. Some films can be challenging to watch. They could be simply too scary, require too much grey matter, or be so awful in every way you have to bring your own fun to the experience. No prizes for guessing where The Kick fits in. [Read more…]

I, Frankenstein Trailer – Aaron Eckhart is all sewn together and supernatural

October 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This is one of those trailers that’s so busy trying to look cool that it’s doesn’t realise it actually looks a bit daft. That’s doesn’t mean the film can’t be fun, as long as a portentous tone doesn’t rob it on entertainment value.

The film is based on Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel of the same name about Adam Frankenstein (Aaron Eckhart), the creation of Dr. Frankenstein, who is still alive centuries after his ‘birth’. Adam is hunted down by a clan of demons who want to learn Adam’s secret in order to reanimate deceased demons and start a new army.

Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, Bill Nighy and Aden Young also star.

The release date has been slipping from February 2013 to September 2013 and now it’s due next January. [Read more…]

Danny Boyle Takes On Heist Flick Smash and Grab

October 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

danny-boyleDanny Boyle has picked his next film and this one is based on a documentary. Following Trance, he’s returning to the heist genre, signing up to direct Smash and Grab, according to Variety. The film is a narrative adaptation of the recent documentary, Smash & Grab: The Story of The Pink Panthers, directed by Havana Marking.

Here’s the documentary’s official synopsis: ‘Their crimes resemble high-octane Hollywood action movies: a sports car speeds through a Dubai shopping mall, crashing into the windows of a Graff jewelry store. Masked, gun-wielding men jump out of the car, and stuff fistfuls of diamonds into their satchels before screeching off. In London, they took all of three minutes to make off with $30 million in diamonds. They are captured not in person, but on surveillance tapes that record their astonishing lightning strikes with hypnotic accuracy.

‘Playing out like a noir thriller spiced with cutting-edge animation and shocking real surveillance footage, Havana Marking’s Smash & Grab is an exclusive all-access pass into the mysterious world of international jewel thieves. Dubbed The Pink Panthers, the formidable Balkan gang has stolen nearly a billion dollars worth of jewels from boutiques in the world’s most opulent cities, including Geneva, Paris, London, Dubai and Tokyo. Through never-before-seen interviews with key gang members, this provocative documentary delves into the gang’s incredible history and introduces the viewer to the global police forces who work furiously to stop them. Beyond the glitz of the Panthers’ incredible heists, Smash & Grab exposes dark truths about the illicit diamond trade and the world’s most ruthless mafia networks.’

It’s a tale that certainly sounds made for cinema and Boyle could have a lot of fun with it. Boyle apparently saw the documentary and became interested in making a feature based on it. Pathe and Fox Searchlight will co-produce and co-finance the adaptation.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Trailer – Chris Pine takes on Tom Clancy’s hero

Last Vegas Trailer – Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas & Morgan Freeman have a ball

October 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last Vegas has been described as the ‘old boys Hangover’ with the likes of Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline (who are all, incidentally, Oscar winners) heading to Vegas and inevitably getting into trouble. Now the new trailer for the movie has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Billy (Michael Douglas), Paddy (Robert De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) have been best friends since childhood. So when Billy, the group’s sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his thirty-something (of course) girlfriend, the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days. However, upon arriving, the four quickly realize that the decades have transformed Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they never imagined. The Rat Pack may have once played the Sands and Cirque du Soleil may now rule the Strip, but it’s these four who are taking over Vegas.’

It should hit cinemas in November. [Read more…]
