Some films can be challenging to watch. They could be simply too scary, require too much grey matter, or be so awful in every way you have to bring your own fun to the experience. No prizes for guessing where The Kick fits in. [Read more…]

In The Name Of (W Imie) (Cinema)

September 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Andrzej Chyra, Mateusz Kosciukiewicz, Lukasz Simlat, Maja Ostaszewska
Director: Malgorzata Szumowska
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 20th 2013

If you don’t like ambiguity in your movies, you’re not going to be a fan of In The Name Of. However if you enjoy something a little challenging that’s designed to push buttons and get you questioning what you’re watching, then there’s a lot to admire about this film. It certainly got plenty of fans at film festivals, including winning the Golden Teddy, the annual award for best LGBT-themed movie at the Berlin Film Festival. [Read more…]

Les Invisibles (DVD)

September 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Bernard, Catherine, Christian, Monique, Pierrot
Director: Sebastien Lifshitz
Running Time: 111 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 23rd 2013

Director Sebastien Lifshitz made his name with modern gay classics such as Presque Rien. In Les Invisibles he moves from fiction to fact with a documentary about older gay people and their experiences. As the title suggests, the film sees these people as ‘the invisible’, whose lives are often sidelined and ignored, despite the fact they lived through a period when being gay was marginalised, discriminated against and life was far more difficult than it is today. Arrow – Season 1 (DVD)

September 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland, Colin Donnell
Director: Various
Running Time: 943 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 23rd 2013

When the first promos for Arrow appeared, it wasn’t clear whether it was going to work. It looked a little po-faced and yet a tad silly, which wasn’t helped by the fact it’s based on a DC Comics character who few people know anything about. However once it started airing it revealed itself to be a surprisingly entertaining show.

After the sinking of his billionaire family’s luxury yacht, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) was presumed dead. However, five years after his disappearance he re-emerges, having been trapped on a remote island all that time. Everyone is amazed to see him, although some still haven’t forgiven him for being the arrogant prig he was before he disappeared. [Read more…]

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Caleb Landry Jones, Sam Riley, Daniel Mays
Director: Neil Jordan
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 23rd 2013

Neil Jordan has always been interested in the supernatural, from the werewolves of The Company Of Wolves to the mermaids of Ondine. He also had great success with bloodsuckers in Interview With The Vampire. Now he returns to vamps for a very different movie, Byzantium.

Clara (Gemma Arterton) and her younger sister, Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan), are constantly moving around, and this time end up in a run-down English seaside town, where they are taken in by the gentle Noel (Daniel Mays). Clara is soon back to her old tricks of setting herself up as a brothel madam, while Eleanor attempts to once more settle into a new environment. [Read more…]

Our Idiot Brother (Blu-ray)

September 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Paul Rudd, Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Steve Coogan
Director: Jesse Peretz
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 16th 2013

It’s taken a long time for Our Idiot Brother to reach the UK. It was released in the US just over two years ago, but it’s only now making it onto DVD and Blu-ray. Considering the awesome cast, it might seem surprising it’s taken so long, but after watching the slightly underwhelming film I can understand why nobody felt in too much of a rush.

Paul Rudd plays the titular idiot, Ned, who lives on an organic farm with his girlfriend, but gets busted and locked up for selling pot to a uniformed police officer. After being let out of prison, he discovers his girlfriend has taken up with another man and won’t allow him back on the farm. Ned’s not even allowed to take his beloved dog, Willie Nelson. Popular 16-year-old Mark (Jamie Blackley) has fallen for Rachel, a girl he met online. She convinces him to look after her brother John (Toby Regbo), defending him from school bullies. When Rachel’s abusive gangster boyfriend does the unthinkable, Mark and John seek revenge. But Mark is sucked into a world much darker than he imagined, leading him to commit a terrible act. Was it for the greater good as he believed, or has he been taken for a ride?

Like Pain and Gain, Uwantme2killhim? is based on a rather unbelievable true story. Unlike the former, its execution is the biggest tragedy to unfold. [Read more…]

Fire With Fire (Blu-ray)

September 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Josh Duhamel, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Vincent D'Onofrio
Director: David Barett
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 16th 2013

It’s clear from the very first scene that there are going to be problems with Fire With Fire. Josh Duhamel’s Jeremy and his band of firefighters bask in the satisfaction of having fought a blaze and get ready to leave, with everyone around congratulating them on a job well done. However what no one seems to have noticed is that behind them the fire hasn’t actually been put out, as flames are still visible. With this sort of lack of care is apparent in the first 30 seconds, it’s little surprise the rest of the movie is far from a masterpiece. [Read more…]

Cal (DVD)

September 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Wayne Virgo, Tom Payne, Emily Corcoran, Daniel Brockelbank, Lucy Russell
Director: Christian Martin
Running Time: 78 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 9th 2013

I really liked 2009’s Shank, as while it was a bit rough around the edges, it felt like a really different kind of coming out story, following young Cal (Wayne Virgo), who grew up in the most deprived areas of Bristol. Hanging around a group of rough friends and getting involved in muggings and other criminal activity, he also has to deal with the fact he’s gay. It’s an extremely homophobic environment, but a meeting with a young French man – who he’d help mug – offers the possibility of a very different life. [Read more…]
