The Baytown Outlaws (Blu-ray)

December 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Clayne Crawford, Travis Fimmel, Daniel Cudmore, Billy Bob Thornton, Eva Longoria
Director: Barry Battles
Running Time: 99 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th 2012

Your enjoyment of The Baytown Outlaws is likely to be directly proportional to how much you like watching assholes (of the figurative not literal kind). There is pretty much nobody in The Baytown Outlaws that could be considered a nice person, and indeed the lead trio are in some respects the worst of the bunch, with their only redeeming feature being that we stick around them long enough to discover there is some humanity under the Southern redneck violence and willingness to kill absolutely anybody without a second thought. Yossi (DVD)

December 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ohad Knoller, Oz Zehavi, Lior Ashkenazi, Meir Golan, Amir Jerassi
Director: Etyan Fox
Running Time: 80 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 10th, 2012

Etyan Fox’s 2002 film Yossi & Jagger has become a bit of a gay fave, and now 10 years later he catches up with one of the title characters in Yossi. The earlier movie followed two men in the Israeli army who fall in love against a backdrop of a military that doesn’t look favourably of gay liaisons. Now Yossi (Ohad Knoller) is a doctor in a hospital, leading a rather lonely, solitary life that revolves around his work, internet porn and looking for one night stands (that don’t always go well). Life Just Is (DVD)

December 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jack Gordon, Nathaniel Martello-White, Fiona Ryan, Will De Meo, Paul Nicholls
Director: Alex Barrett
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 10th, 2012

I always say a film must be doing something right if you have a reaction to it, rather than it blandly flitting across your retina. However it’s preferable if that reaction is joy or admiration, rather than a sense of irritation and a feeling that the whole thing is closer to being pretentious toss than a successful trip into the minds of a group of people in their mid-20s. The Dark Knight Rises (Blu-ray)

November 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy
Director: Christopher Nolan
Running Time: 164 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 3rd 2012

The Dark Knight Rises had a lot to live up to after the superb second instalment in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. While it may not be quite as good as The Dark Knight, the film is a fitting conclusion to the series, tying up the thematic ends and ramping up the spectacle and excitement.

It’s seven years after the events of The Dark Knight and Bruce Wayne is living as a virtual recluse in his mansion. Batman is no longer needed and Wayne is a physical wreck. However when a mysterious figure known as Bane (Tom Hardy) arrives in Gotham with plans aimed at destroying Bruce and potentially destroying the city, there’s no choice but to bring the Bat out of retirement. Laurence Anyways (Cinema)

November 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Melvil Poupaud, Suzanne Clement, Nathalie Baye
Director: Xavier Dolan
Running Time: 168 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 30th 2012

After directing his first film, I Killed My Mother, at the age of 19 and following it up with the pretty good Heartbeats, many people have been wondering what Xavier Dolan would come up with next. The answer is Laurence Anyways, about 10 years in the relationship between Fred (Suzanne Clement) and Laurence (Melvil Poupaud).

At the outset they are just a normal man and woman who love each other and suffer the usual ups and downs of relationships. However Laurence can’t hold something in any longer and after two years with Fred he tells her that he’s transsexual and wants to start living as a woman. Inevitably this causes problems, with Fred initially wondering whether she should just leave – especially as her sister seems to think is the only solution. However they stay together, but the transition proves tough on both of them, and not solely because of Laurence becoming a woman. [Read more…]

Magic Mike (DVD)

November 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Cody Horn, Channing Tatum
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 26th 2012

While there was a lot of interest in Magic Mike before it was released in cinemas, I don’t think many people suspected that this $7 million budgeted movie would pull in over $100 million at the US box office, or get quite so many people so excited. There’s little doubt much of the interest in the film is that while women are routinely sexualised in cinemas, its rarer for a film to come along that offers the girls and gay guys something to get hot under the collar about, with male characters unabashedly served up for their sexual delectation. Rhod Gilbert: The Man With The Flaming Battenberg Tattoo (DVD)

November 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rhod Gilbert
Director: Brian Klein
Running Time: 83 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 19th 2012

I was starting to wonder whether Rhod Gilbert’s patented brand of frustrated ranting was all purely an act. Surely someone can’t really get as annoyed and care so much about such small things? Yes it’s funny taking things to the extreme, but it’s not real, is it?

Then I watched this disc’s special feature, ‘Rhod vs. Hecklers’, which sees the comedian answer audience comments that were cut out of the main show. The first half of this feature is pretty standard, but then Rhod starts talking about how he hates the adverts pinned on the wall in front of men when they’re standing at urinals. A woman tells him that girls have the same thing on the back of the door of their toilet cubicles. And that’s enough to set Rhod off on a rant that shows just what pedant he can be, where he gets increasingly annoyed as he’s determined it’s not the back of the door, it’s the inside. [Read more…]

Lee Nelson – Live (DVD)

November 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Simon Brodkin, Terry Noble
Director: Peter Orton
Running Time: 82 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 19th 2012

I’m not sure about Lee Nelson, as my initially lefty think can’t help but wonder if he’s busy reigniting the class wars. I find it difficult not to feel there’s a slightly have-your-cake-eat-it aspect to Simon Brodkin’s character, so that some will see it as a critique of clueless chaviness and laugh at his dimness and stereotyped antisocial attitudes, while others will see him as some type of working class hero. Are we meant to laugh at or with his shoplifting and sexist jokes? Is it an act that essentially makes fun of marginalised people or celebrates them? I suspect Brodkin is playing both ends against the middle, or else he solely cares that it works and people enjoy it. [Read more…]

Jack Whitehall – Live (DVD)

November 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jack Whitehall
Director: Brian Klein
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 19th 2012

If I had to put a bet on which of today’s crop of young comedians will still be on our screens in a couple of decades time, I’d put my money on Jack Whitehall. I almost hate myself for saying that as he’s has that mix of being posh (and seemingly getting posher with every day) and overconfident that normally results in the reflex reaction, ‘tosser’. Daniel Sloss – Live (DVD)

November 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Daniel Sloss
Director: Kevin Bishop
Running Time: 72 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 19th 2012

Daniel Sloss makes me feel old, and not just because he’s only 21. It’s due to the fact that I remember thinking the way he did when I was younger – such as the annoyances of younger brothers and dealing with that time when you’re an adult but still finding a new status outside the family home. Over time much of that drifted away so that now watching him is almost an odd sort of nostalgia, as there’s a slight feeling of him tapping into something many of us lose when grown-up life bashes it out of us.
