Leo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire & More Look Classy In New Great Gatsby Character Posters

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Great-Gatsby-character-poster5
It’s not too long now until the May release of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and to get people interested, a new set of character posters have been released, featuring Leo Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson, Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan, and Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker.

The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks.  Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.  It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

The film hits US cinemas on May 10th and the UK on May 17th. Click below for larger versions of the new character posters.

First Poster For CBGB Nightclub Biopic Arrives

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cbgb-quad
The first quad poster for CBGB has arrived, giving us a look the cast, which includes Alan Rickman, Rupert Grint, Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, Kerry Bishé, Johnny Galecki and quite a few more.

Randall Miller directs this drama that takes fans inside the famed CBGB punk rock club in New York City. The film is a biopic of Hilly Kristal (Alan Rickman), who wanted to start a club for country, bluegrass and blues (the CBGB of the club’s name) but found it difficult to get acts, and so ended up allowing the likes of The Ramones and Blondie to play, helping give punk a foothold in America.

Along with Rickman, Ashley Greene plays his daughter, while Joel David Moore, Julian Acosta and Steven Schub are three of the Ramones; Malin Akerman is Debbie Harry; Mickey Sumner is Patti Smith; Rupert Grint will be Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome; and Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is Iggy Pop.

The film should be out later this year.

New Lone Ranger Photo Gets Fiery

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lone-ranger-preview-pic8
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has released a new photo from The Lone ranger on his Twitter page, showing Armie Hammer and William Fichtner walking away from two massive fires. It’s a classic shot as the heroes walk away as everything burns behind them, but unfortunately there’s no info on exactly how this fits into the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero  is brought to life through new eyes.  Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.’

The movie hits cinemas in July.

Two More Kick-Ass 2 Character Posters Arrive – Kick-Ass and The Motherf**ker

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kick-ass-2-character-poster9
Last week we had character posters for Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and Colonel Stars & Stripes (Jim Carrey), and now it’s the turn of Kick-Ass himself (Aaron Johnson) and the evil The Motherf**ker (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2.  After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol.  When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

‘When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave.  With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.  Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own.  With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

‘Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets,  the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad.  But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.’

The film hits UK cinemas on July 19th, and will be released in the US a months later.

Meet Pacific Rim’s US Jaeger, Gipsy Danger

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pacific-rim-new-poster6Last week we met Russia, Japan, Australia and China’s Jaegers (giant robots) from Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming movie, Pacific Time, but there was no way the US was going to miss out on the action, so take a look above for the American Jaeger, Gipsy Danger.

It’s perhaps no surprise that while the others look like giant robot war machines, this one immediately looks a tad more heroic (although we’re sure it’s good at fighting too). With huge monsters emerging from under the Pacific, nations around the edge of the sea are forced to create the enormous, human-piloted robots in order to battle them and try to protect the world.

Pacific Rim comes to cinemas on July 12th, 2013 and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Diego Klattenhoff, Burn Gorman and Robert Kazinsky.

Clint Eastwood May Direct Jersey Boys Next

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

clint-eastwoodClint Eastwood loves music and is seems he really wants to make a music-based project next. He has been planning to do a remake of A Star Is Born, but that got delayed when Beyoncé dropped out of the lead role. Now THR reports he’s in early talks to direct the musical Jersey Boys, taking over from the previously attached Jon Favreau was.

Jersey Boys was picked up by Warner Bros. last year, but just two months after picking it up, they put the project into turnaround in November. GK Films was in talks with both Fox and Paramount, but now that Clint Eastwood may sign on, the musical may be heading back to the director’s home studio of Warner Bros. after all.

A Star Is Born is still in the works, but they’re having problems casting. Esperanza Spalding is currently the top choice for the female lead, but the main problem is finding a male lead, with several notable stars passing, including, most recently, Sean Penn. Perhaps nobody wants to play an alcoholic star whose fame is on the wane. If Clint Eastwood does sign a deal for Jersey Boys, he will make that project next, with A Star Is Born following directly after.

Jersey Boys is based on the popular Broadway musical about the life of singer Frankie Valli and his group The Four Seasons. John Logan (Hugo) wrote the screenplay, based on the 2005 musical that took home four Tony Awards.

G.I. Joe Retaliation Tops The US Box Office

April 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gi-joe-retaliation-poster1Many thought that after the first GI Joe film failed to set the box office alight, that would be the last we’d see of it on the big screen, but the franchise has returned with GI Joe: Retaliation. The movie may have opened lower than its predecessor, taking $54 million versus $41 million in its opening weekend (although Retaliation can add another $10 million from Thursday), but it’s more than many had thought.

With a very healthy $130+ opening worldwide, Variety reports that this is more than enough to get the ball rolling on a third movie. It’s early days so nothing has been set for this third movie yet – there’s no director or writers at the moment – but assuming Retaliation’s gross holds up over the coming weeks, they’ll probably want to move pretty fast on it.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor placed third on the US box office chart with $22 million in its first three days. It’s his best opening for a non Madea movie and marks his ninth film to gross more than $20 million on its opening weekend (only Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis have had more $20m+ debuts).

The Host had less to cheer about, as despite hope that it would capture the Twilight crowd, it opened in sixth spot with $11 million. As with the likes of Beautiful Creatures, it’s struggled to capture the interest of teens, who seem to be all-or-nothing in their adoration of these potential franchises.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of March 29th-31st.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 GI Joe: Retaliation $41.2 $51.7
2 The Croods $26.5 $88.6
3 Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor $22.3 $22.3
4 Olympus Has Fallen $14.0 $54.7
5 Oz The Great And Powerful $11.6 $198.2
6 The Host $11.0 $11.0
7 The Call $4.8 $39.4
8 Admission $3.2 $11.7
9 Spring Breakers $2.7 $10.1
10 The Incredible Burt Wonderstone $1.3 $20.5

Before Midnight Trailer – Catching up with Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy’s Jesse and Celine

March 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’ll be interesting to see how far into the future director Richard Linklater and star Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy can keep this going into the future, but the third instalment in what’s becoming an every-nine-years event, is coming with the return of Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy) in Before Midnight.

Following 1995’s Before Sunrise and 2004’s Before Sunset, the movie was shot secretly in Greece last summer, and will be heading to cinemas this summer.

Once again it follows Jesse and Celine over part of a day as they reignite their relationship.

James Spader Joins Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman

March 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-spaderTommy Lee Jones must have liked working with James Spader in Lincoln (even if they never actually shared a scene together), as he’s now cast him in his directorial outing, The Homesman, which also has Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank attached to star.

The period drama is about on a claim-jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) and a pioneer woman (Swank) in the 19th Century, who both escort three insane women on a bizarre journey from Nebraska to Iowa, where they must brave the harsh elements along the way. It’s not 100% clear who Spader will play, although THR describes the part as ‘a swindler’.

The film will be Jones’ first cinematic directorial effort since 2005’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, although in 2011 he helmed an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited for HBO. Production on The Homesman is due to start fairly soon in New Mexico.
