Inside Llewyn Davis Trailer – The Coen Brothers are back with a musical tale

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many had thought the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewlyn Davis would get an Oscar-bait late-2012 release, but it’s not hitting the US until February 8th and should come to the UK not long afterwards.

Oscar Isaac stars as the title character, a folk singer making his way through the Greenwich Village music scene in the 1960s. The movie is loosely based on the life of folk singer Dave Van Ronk. Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Gerrett Hedlund, and John Goodman also star.

It certainly looks stylish, with plenty of the Coens’ trademark sharp dialogue, although it’s definitely one of their more idisyncratic efforts.

New Oz The Great And Powerful Posters Take A Look At The Witch & Wizard

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oz-great-powerful-poster1It’s just a month and a half until Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful hits cinemas on March 8th, and now two new posters have arrived, one showcasing James Franco’s wizard, Oscar Diggs, and the other showing us Rachel Weisz’s wicked witch, Evanora.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting.

‘Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.’

Reese Witherspoon In Talks For The Good Lie

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reese-witherspoonReese Witherspoon already has an Oscar for Walk The Line, but it seems like she wants to try for another as she’s in talks to take the lead role in Philippe Falardeau’s indie drama, The Good Lie, according to Variety.

The movie is about a young refugee from the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the United States with three other lost boys (children who were dislocated during the war after many people were killed and hundreds of villages burned).

They develop an unlikely friendship with a brash American woman (Witherspoon) who is assigned to help them. However, the young man struggles to adjust to his new life and his feelings of guilt about the brother he left behind.

Margaret Nagle, who wrote the script, has been trying to get a film made highlighting the plight of the lost boys of Sudan for over a decade, but previous attempts have fallen apart. She’ll be hoping she has more luck this time and that securing Witherspoon with help ensure a greenlight.

Nic Mathieu To Helm Giant Robots Movie Robotech

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nic-mathieuWarner Bros. seems to think there’s a lot of money in giant robots, as they’ve already got Pacific Rim hitting cinemas this summer, and now they’re moving forward with another mecha movies they’ve had percolating for several years, Robotech.

THR reports that the studio has selected commercials helmer Nic Mathieu to direct the movie version of the Japanese cartoon series. Mathieu has no feature credits, although he’s well known in the ad industry for inventive CG-fuelled commercials, so he could well be a good choice.

Robotech is, ‘A sprawling sci-fi epic, which takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship’s energy source known as “protoculture,” and the planet’s survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.’

The likelihood is that Warner will wait to see how Pacific Rim does before deciding on whether to make Robotech, although having a director attached should mean they can move forward fairly quickly if they do decide to make the film.

Kate Winslet May Join Shailene Woodley In Divergent

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kate-winsletWith Twilight finished, Summit Entertainment is keen to get back into the young adult business and is throwing their weight behind Divergent, based on the first book in Veronica Roth’s planned dystopian trilogy. Descendants star Shailene Woodley is already attached to the lead role, and now Variety reports she’s likely to be joined by Kate Winslet.

Divergent, which has inevitably drawn comparisons to The Hunger Games, is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in a society divided into five factions, each based on a different virtue: honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. Beatrice must choose which faction she wants to try and join, and starts training in order to enter.

There’s no word on which role Winslet is in talks to play, although it’s likely to either be Tris’ mother, Natalie Prior, or Jeanine Matthews, the leader of the Erudite faction.

We reported a few weeks ago that Alex Pettyfer, Lucas Till and Jeremy Irvine were up for a major male role in the movie (presumably Four, Tris’ trainer), but the latest Variety report suggests they’re now out of the running as the studio is looking for someone a tiny bit older to take on the role.

Neil Burger is directing the movie, which should go into production later this year.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Sequel Coming, With Ronny Yu In Talks To Direct

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

crouching-tiger-posterIt may be 12 years since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon hits cinemas, but despite the time delay it’s been announced that The Weinstein Company is backing a sequel to the 2000 wushu blockbuster, with production tentatively scheduled to begin in May, according to Deadline.

Ronny Yu is in talks to direct from a screenplay provided by John Fusco (Young Guns, Hidalgo). Here’s what the writer had to say about the project, based on the popular Chinese fiction series Wu Sia, “This was an opportunity to explore a lifelong passion I’ve had for Wu Sia, and if there wasn’t continuing source material, I would never have gotten involved.”

The script is based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight, the fifth book in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy by Wang Du Lu. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on the fourth book in the series. Silver Vase, Iron Knight follows the Yu Shu Lien character portrayed by Michelle Yeoh in the original.

It isn’t clear which Crouching Tiger stars, if any, will reprise their roles for this follow-up.

Director Ang Lee will not be a part of the project, and many will be concerned about a sequel helmed by Yu, who’s now best known for directing the likes of Bride Of Chucky and Freddy Vs. Jason, but the Hong Kong native did started out making action films in his own country, so he knows how it works.

Joaquin Phoenix Reuniting With Paul Thomas Anderson For Inherent Vice

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joaquin-PhoenixPaul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix must have enjoyed working with one another, as it’s been revealed via THR that they’re planning to get back together for Inherent Vice. You can certainly understand why Phoenix is keen to work together again, as he’s scored an Oscar nomination for his recent performance in The Master.

The actor replaces Robert Downey Jr., who has been loosely attached to the movie since February 2011, but has now dropped out. This noir film, set in 1969 Los Angeles, is based on Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel about a weed-smoking private detective on a kidnapping case.

Paul Thomas Anderson is directing from his own adapted screenplay, with Megan Ellison producing and financing through her Annapurna Pictures company. It isn’t known when production may begin, but Paul Thomas Anderson is apparently keen to make it fairly soon, ensuring there isn’t another seven year gap as there mas between There Will Be Blood and The Master.

JJ Abrams Close To Deal To Direct Star Wars VII

January 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jj-abramsIt seems almost unfair to give the man who’s already in charge of the second biggest sci-fi franchise in history – Star Trek – the job of bringing back the biggest, but it seems that’s what’s going to happen, as THR reports that JJ Abrams is close to signing a deal to direct Disney new instalment in Star Wars saga.

There is no official word from Walt Disney Pictures or Lucasfilm at this time yet, but sources close to the project says it’s happening.

It’s a bit of a turnaround from last November, when Abrams claimed he was not interested in directing the film, saying “Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!”

However, Kathleen Kennedy went after J.J. Abrams herself, heavily courting him over a period of time, and it seems her efforts have paid off. Star Wars: Episode VII will debut in May of 2015, with a screenplay by Michael Arndt.

Ron Howard Circling Chris Hemsworth Starrer In The Heart Of The Sea

January 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ron-howardRon Howard seems keen to fill his development slate at the moment, as with his planned take of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower still looking for funding, he’s seeking other films to make. Just in the last week he’s signed up for the JJ Abrams produced All I’ve Got and a live-action version of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.

Now he’s got yet another one, as Vulture reports he’s circling In The Heart Of The Sea. The project has been in development for over a decade but got some fresh impetus last year when Chris Hemsworth attached himself to star. The movie is based on the true story of a sperm whale that destroyed the whaling ship The Essex in 1820.

Charles Leavitt’s script is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s non-fiction book, with Warner Bros. backing the movie. Hemsworth is attached to play the first mate of the Nantucket based boat, who took charge as the situation got ever more dangerous.

If Howard does make the movie is will reunite him with Hemsworth after they made the upcoming F1 tale Rush together.

Rosario Dawson Joins Ryan Reynolds In Queen Of The Night

January 24, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosario-dawsonSeveral months ago now it was revealed that Ryan Reynolds had signed on to star in Queen Of The Night, which Sweet Hereafter helmer Atom Egoyan is planning to direct. Since then the likes of Scott Speedman and Mireille Enos have signed on for the movie, and now Reynolds has got some more company in the movie, as Variety reports that Rosario Dawson has signed up for the film.

Based on a screenplay by Egoyan and David Fraser, Reynolds will play a father who goes in search of his missing daughter. While the girl was eight at the time of her abduction, her dad gets new information about the case almost nine years later, which leads him to think his daughter is still alive.

Mireille Enos will be Reynolds wife, who always checks in with the police on her missing daughter’s birthday. She realises that disturbing memorabilia left at her workplace are clues leading to her daughter’s whereabouts. Dawson joins Speedman as a detective heading up an investigation into the location of an abducted child.

Shooting starts this month in Canada.
