Isla Fisher Joins Jackie Brown Prequel Switch

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Switch, based on Elmore Leonard’s prequel to Jackie Brown, has been in the works for quite a while, and it seems that the lengthy development has caused some casting changes. Variety reports that Isla Fisher is now in negotiations to star in the film, although Dennis Quaid has apparently had to drop out due to his TV series Vegas getting a full season pick-up.

The story is set 15 years before the events in Jackie Brown, with Ordell Robbie (Yasiin Bey) and Louis Gara (John Hawkes) teaming up to kidnap the wife (Jennifer Aniston) of a Detroit real estate developer (who was supposed to be played by Quaid). Their plan goes awry when the husband refuses to pay up, forcing the duo to rethink their options. Ty Burrell is set to be a witness to the kidnapping. Fisher will be Melanie, a role played by Bridget Fonda in Jackie Brown.

Daniel Schechter is directing from his own screenplay, adapted from Elmore Leonard’s 1978 novel.

Tom Hardy Goes For Splinter Cell Adaptation

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Videogame adaptations may have a pretty dodgy history but Hollywood doesn’t want to give up on then and indeed recently they seem to be more in love with them then ever, such as getting Michael Fassbender attached to an Assassin’s Creed movie. Now Variety reports that Tom Hardy has agreed to star in a film based on Tom Clancy’s hit game series, Splinter Cell.

The movie has been a long time coming, as it first went into development back in 2004, when Peter Berg was attached to direct. Since then various studios and talent have flirted with it, but at the moment it doesn’t have a studio backing it – software company Ubisoft will be hoping adding Hardy changes all that. Eric Singer is writing the screenplay.

The story is about Sam Fisher, a highly-trained operative in a secretive unit known as Echelon. Here’s what Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet had to say about the casting news, “Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills. His involvement in the Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and we’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story, while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”

It isn’t known when they hope to shoot the movie.

Dane DeHaan, Brady Corbet Or Alden Ehrenreich May Be Harry Osborn In Amazing Spider-man 2

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The news came in a couple of days ago that Sony is planning to start shooting The Amazing Spider-man 2 early next year and so director Marc Webb needs to get new cast members lined up as quickly as he can. It’s long been rumoured that Harry Osborn would show up in the second movie, and now that’s been confirmed with THR reporting that actors such as Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Brady Corbet (Melancholia), and Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) are trying out for the part later this week.

The role was apparently originally crafted for a bulkier, more athletic looking actor, but now it’s being revamped to have a more “dark and edgy” feel. In this take on the Spider-man legend Osborn will be a college kid who becomes friends with Peter Parker. Of course Osborn is the son of Norman Osborn (aka Green Goblin), but it’s not known if pops will show up in this movie.

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are returning as Peter and Gwen Stacy, with Oscar nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) confirmed to play Mary Jane Watson. Jamie Foxx has also been rumoured to play the villain Electro.

David Yates’ Tarzan Eyes Alexander Skarsgard & Samuel L. Jackson

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week is was revealed that Harry Potter director David Yates was planning on direct a new version of Tarzan for Warner Bros. Things seem to be moving quickly, as the filmmaker is already looking at actors to play the title character, with Variety reporting that Alexander Skarsgard is the current frontrunner, with Samuel L. Jackson in talks for a supporting role.

Last week it was suggested that Henry Cavill and Charlie Hunnam were the top contenders for the role along with Skarsgard, although it seems the studio and director has now decided on the True Blood star. A formal offer has not been issued to the actor as of yet. Skarsgard’s 6’4″ frame and physique are believed to be factors that lead to the studio’s decision.

Variety says Skarsgard ‘would play John Clayton III, known around the world as the famous “ape man” Tarzan. Years after he’s re-assimilated into society, he’s asked by Queen Victoria to investigate the goings-on in the Congo. Tarzan teams with an ex-mercenary named George Washington Williams to save the Congo from a fierce warlord who controls a massive diamond mine.

‘Samuel L. Jackson is being eyed to play Williams, a Civil War veteran eager to redeem himself for his part in the massacre of Native Americans.’

It isn’t known when it might shoot.

Mission: Impossible 5 Eyes Christopher McQuarrie To Direct

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When it was first announced, it sounded like Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol would be Tom Cruise’s last outing as Ethan Hunt, with the film handing over to a new team. However after it raked in just under $700 million worldwide and became Cruise’s action biggest hit ever, he’s been keen to do another one.

Now it seems Paramount is looking for a director, with Deadline reporting that writer-director Christopher McQuarrie is currently the top choice. Cruise and McQuarrie have a relationship that started with the 2008 historical drama Valkyrie, which Christopher McQuarrie wrote. Since then Tom has shot the upcoming Jack Reacher, which McQuarrie wrote and directed. The filmmaker has also provided uncredited rewrites for Tom Cruise movie such such as All You Need Is Kill and Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, so he really does seem a bit of a fave for the star.

Tom Cruise is producing the sequel alongside J.J. Abrams, but nothing will be fully official until Paramount and Skydance bring writers on board to craft the screenplay. There’s no timeframe known on when we might be able to expect the movie.

Benicio Del Toro Heads For Paradise Lost As Pablo Escobar

November 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I apologise to anyone who thought the above headline meant Alex Proyas’ awesome sounding take on John Milton’s Paradise Lost had been resurrected (that film still quite dead), as this is a very different movie, all about drug dealing.

Variety reports Benicio Del Toro is in final negotiations to play Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in the true story drama Paradise Lost. This movie is about Nick, a young surfer who is visiting his brother in Colombia. He falls in love with a local girl named Maria, with all the elements in place for a classic romance. However, things take a dangerous turn when he finds out that Maria is the niece of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.

Italian actor Andrea Di Stefano (Life of Pi) wrote the screenplay and will make his directorial debut, with Dimitri Rassam set to produce. Production will begin next March in Panama.

Oz The Great & Powerful Full Trailer – Sam Raimi’s flick is looking incredibly fantastical

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised when the full banner poster for Oz the Great And Powerful was revealed yesterday, a new full trailer for the movie has now been released. It’s certainly wants to suggest this is going to be a fantastical, incredible looking movie, and as many have said, there’s more than a hint that Disney would like us to think of this as the new Alice In Wonderland.

It also interesting that they’ve kept the far distance looking oddly flat, which is presumably a nod to the pretty but painted on backgrounds of the classic 1939 Wizard Of Oz. However what’s more difficult to tell is whether the story is strong enough to compete with the visuals, and also whether the human characters can be fully integrated into a world that’s so reliant on special effects. We’ll have to keep out fingers crossed.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.’

It’s due out March 8th 2013.

The Canyons Teaser Trailer – Lindsay Lohan & James Deen ham it up

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When you see the acting in this new teaser trailer, you may be wondering what sort of dreadful rubbish this is, but the hamminess is very deliberate, with the vlack & white photography giving this a hint that this a take on cheesy 1950s b-movie noir melodrama, but with a more modern take on sex and relationships.

As the trailer points out, it was partly funded by Kickstarter, but while that’s a platform that usually reserved for unknown filmmakers, this one if directed by Paul Schrader (screenwriter of Taxi Driver),with a script by American Psycho’s Brett Easton Ellis. They went to Kickstarter as they were afraid of the type of censorship traditional funding normally demands.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Canyons is a contemporary L.A. noir from director Paul Schrader, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and producer Braxton Pope about the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, both personally and professionally, among a group of young people in their 20′s and how one chance meeting connected to the past unravels all of their lives, resulting in deceit, paranoia, cruel mind games and ultimately violence.’

Lindsay Lohan stars opposite James Deen – a man who made his name in hardcore porn but is now going legit.

The Host Trailer & Poster – Take a look at the Stephenie Meyer adaptation

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Twilight comes to an end this week with the release of Breaking Dawn Part 2, and so it’s a good time to launch the full length trailer for the next Stephenie Meyer adaptation, The Host, which is due to hit UK cinemas March 2013.

In The Host, our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed, including Soarise Ronan’s main character, Melanie Stryder. However while normally the human is completely subdued by their host, in Melanie’s case, her personality flashes through, intriguing her Host, known as Wanda, and setting them off on a quest to find the last free humans. Ronan, Jake Abel, Max Irons and William Hurt star in the movie.

It’s difficult to see this taking over the world the way Twlight has, but it does look like it might be entertaining.

One Direction Getting A 3D Film From Morgan Spurlock

November 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Morgan Spurlock is best known for his documentaries such as Super Size Me and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, however now he’s heading for something a little more musical, as it’s been announced that he’ll direct a 3D film ‘showcasing’ the pop sensation, One Direction. A release date of August 30th, 2013 has already been set.

Here’s what Morgan Spurlock had to say about the project, “This is an incredible opportunity and an amazing moment in time for the band. To capture this journey and share it with audiences around the world will be an epic undertaking that I am proud to be a part of.”

Producer Simon Cowell also released a statement regarding this new movie, “I’m delighted we’re making this film and Morgan is the perfect person to give that access-all-areas, behind-the-scenes look into what it’s like to be One Direction today. What the band have achieved is incredible, they and their fans have made history around the world – this is for them.”

What hasn’t been revealed is exactly what the movie will be. While there will almost undoubtedly be a lot of music, whether it’ll mainly be a concert movie, something more about the boys themselves, or indeed a Beatles style semi-fictional effort isn’t clear. I’m sure we’ll find out soon.

One Direction – Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – have becomes a ridiculously huge deal all around the world, with they album ‘Up All Night’ makinge US history, as it was the first time a UK group’s debut album entered the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at No. 1. The band has sold over 13 million records worldwide and has an enormously fervent following. If you want to know more about the film as it comes together, you follow @1D3Dmovie on Twitter.
