October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It may only be 17 seconds long, but this tease gives us our first look at footage from next year’s Iron Man 3, ahead of the release of a full trailer on Tuesday. It’s all a bit blink and you’ll miss it, but it seems Pepper Potts is in a bit of bother and there’s also a brief look at Ben Kingsley as the devious Mandarin. Hopefully we’ll get to see a lot more when the full trailer arrives tomorrow.

Which X-Man Is Rumoured For A Wolverine Cameo?

October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Okay, we’d better start off with a spoiler warning, as if you want everything about The Wolverine to be a surprise, stop reading now, but if you want to know which of the X-Men from the Bryan Singer film series might be appearing in the upcoming movie, keep reading.

The Wolverine has been in production for quite a few weeks now down in Australia, and all we’ve heard so far is that it will be a stand alone movie that sees Hugh Jackman’s adamantium skeletoned mutant heading to Japan. However We Got This Covered says the movie may have some crossover to earlier X-Men films, as they report Famke Janssen headed Down Under last week and headed to the set to shoot a cameo.

While we saw what we presumed was the first meeting between Famke’s Jean Grey and Jackman’s Wolverine in X-Men, it’s possible they had met before and memory challenged Wolverine simply can’t remember it. However it’s also possible this rumour is untrue or that Janssen wasn’t in Australia for The Wolverine.

She’s also been rumoured for a cameo in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, as part of the time-travel elements of that film, and a Wolverine cameo may be part of Fox’s attempts to make their various superhero properties more like Marvel’s interconnected universe. We’ll have to wait and see if she does pop up in The Wolverine when it’s released next July.

Paranormal Activity 5 Confirmed For Next Year, Plus Latino Themed Spin-off

October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This should come as a surprise to no one, but Paramount has confirmed that Paranormal Activity 5 is in the works and will hit cinemas next October, according to Deadline. As we reported earlier today, part four opened soft in the US, with its $30 million opening gross more than $20 million down on part three’s.

However, as they films cost so little to make (Paranormal Activity 3’s budget is under $5 million), they’re still incredibly profitable, so it’s little wonder Paramount wants to kee them going. Indeed they’re planning to expand the franchise, as they’ve also confirmed a rumoured Latino-themed spin-off, which will arrive in cinemas early next year.

This spin-off will be designed to appeal to the ‘very sizeable’ Latino audience that flocks to the Paranormal Activity films, as well as to play on it popularity in Central and South America. The film would be about the same demon from the original films, which has possessed several unlucky victims, but would star mostly Latino actors and take place partly in Spanish.

Christopher Landon, the writer of the 2007 surprise hit Disturbia and son of actor Michael Landon, will direct this spin-off.

Andy Serkis to Direct Mo-Cap Animal Farm

October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andy Serkis has been honing his directing skills heading the second unit on the upcoming The Hobbit movies. Now he’s planning to take the main director’s chair, as THR reports he’s set to helm a performance capture adaptation of the George Orwell classic Animal Farm.

The film is being produced by The Imaginarium, the performance capture studio that Andy Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish formed in 2011. Here’s what Andy Serkis had to say about the project, “I think we found a rather fresh way of looking at it. It is definitely using performance capture but we are using an amalgamation of filming styles to create the environments. We are in proof of concept stage at the moment, designing characters and experimenting on our stage with the designs. It is quite a wide canvas at the moment as to how much and how far we can take performance capture with quadrupeds and how much we will be using facial [capture]. We are not discounting the use of key frame animation or puppeteering parts of animals. We are in an experimental phase; it’s terribly exciting.

“We’re keeping it fable-istic and [aimed at] a family audience. We are not going to handle the politics in a heavy-handed fashion. It is going to be emotionally centered in a way that I don’t think has been seen before. The point of view that we take will be slightly different to how it is normally portrayed and the characters-we are examining this in a new light.”

Serkis is also expected to act in the movie. However don’t expect Animal Farm until 2015 at the earliest, as Serkis has promotion of The Hobbit and his role as Caesart in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to slot in before he heads to the Orwell classic.

Paranormal Activity 4 Soft But Still Tops US Box Office

October 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While each of the previous Paranormal Activity movies has opened stronger than the last, Paranormal Activity 4 broke that streak with a soft $30 million debut. It will still be an incredibly profitable film, as it only cost $5 million to make, but it’s certainly a dip from part 3’s $52.6 million.

However Paranount can console itself with the fact that elsewhere in the world the movie has opened stronger than the last film. That said, with dodgy reviews and apparently soft word of mouth, it may not hold up stunningly well in the rup up to Halloween.

Although it’s a rather made up record, Warner is trumpeting that Argo has had the best hold of any live action movie ever released outside the November and December holiday window, dropping just 15% from its debut. It added another $16.3 million, suggesting amazing word of mouth.

Other than PA4, the only other new movie to hit the top 10 was the Tyler Perry starrer Alex Cross, which opened to a disappointing $11.75 million. Despite a marketing campaign that tried to sell the film outside Perry’s core African American audience, trying to lure in James Patterson fans, 74% of the those buying tickets were black. It’s not a great start and is likely to nix plans that were already in motion for a sequel.

Here’s the US top 10 for October 19th-21st.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Paranormal Activity 4 $30.2 $30.2
2 Argo $16.6 $43.1
3 Hotel Transylvania $13.5 $119.0
4 Taken 2 $13.4 $105.9
5 Alex Cross $11.7 $11.7
6 Sinister $9.0 $31.9
7 Here Comes The Boom $8.5 $23.2
8 Pitch Perfect $7.0 $45.7
9 Frankenweenie $4.4 $28.3
10 Looper $4.2 $57.8

Jason Segel To Turn Documentary The Other F Word Into A Comedy

October 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many who watched the 2011 documentary The Other F Word thought its premise was almost like the set-up for a Hollywood comedy. Jason Segel must have though the same as Variety reports he’s teamed up with co-writer and executive producer Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and sold a pitch to Fox to turn the documentary into a movie comedy.

Andrea Blaugrund directed the original documentary, which follows a group of aging punk rockers, who have to temper their anti-authoritarian tendencies as they transition into parenthood. Jason Segel will star as one such dad.

While the documentary featured plenty of high profile rockers, including Art Alexakis, Flea, and Lars Frederiksen, it is unclear if they will return for cameos, it is likely.

David Oyelowo To Play Sugar Ray Robinson In Sweet Thunder

October 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While British actor David Oyelowo hasn’t hit it big quite yet (despite roles of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and The Help), Hollywood certainly seems to think he has a bright future, with parts in The Paperboy, Lincoln, Jack Reacher and The Butler all incoming.

Now Deadline reports that he’s to play legendary boxer Sugar Ray Robinson in the biopic Sweet Thunder, based on Wil Haygood’s biography, Sweet Thunder: The Life And Times Of Sugar Ray Robinson.

Haygood also wrote the first draft of the screenplay, with producer and writer Danny Strong looking to possibly do a second draft, depending on who the director is. Sweet Thunder will follow Sugar Ray Robinson’s exploits throughout his early career, and his refusal to get into the ring with organised crime, which cost him quite a few title bouts. The film will look at how the boxer helped expose the seedy underbelly of boxing, making it a more legitimate sport.

Nicolas Cage In Talks For Biblical Rapture Left Behind Reboot

October 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Hollywood has shown a lot of interest in biblical/religion based movies recently, in the hope of raking in some cash from US Christians. Now it appears they’re looking at rebooting the Left Behind series, based on Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins novels, which were made into a successful (low budget) series of films in the early 2000s starring Kirk Cameron.

Now THR reports that Nicolas Cage is eyeing the lead role of Cameron ‘Buck’ Williams in a big screen do-over of the end of the world thriller. This will be the first theatrical feature from faith-oriented production company Stoney Lake Entertainment. The story follows a group of survivors who are left behind after the biblical rapture takes all the faithful to heaven, and they’re left to deal with the end of days.. The original trilogy became the highest grossing Christian-themed franchise ever produced.

Let’s hope the presence of some a-list talent will ensure this doesn’t delve too far into the Christian right’s hatred of gays (Kirk Cameron has become one of the poster boys of the anti-gay movement, and likes to paint himself as a martyr because people argue back against his patronising, odious views).

With a projected budget of $15 million, this reboot will shoot in early spring with a projected release date of Fall 2013.
