Aaron Eckhart Joins Olympus Has Fallen

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The White House is gonna be in trouble at cinemas next year, as two movies are in the works that see terrorists taking over the President’s house and Secret Service agents having to take it back. Now Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen has got its US President, as Variety reports that Aaron Eckhart has signed up to play the role.

The film centres on Gerard Butler’s former Secret Service agent who tries to save the White House after terrorists attack the presidential residence. The plot has been described as Die Hard in the White House. The movie is quite similar to Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, which is also racing into production with Jamie Foxx as the President and Channing Tatum as the Secret Service Agent who must take the White House back.

Both movies will shoot later this year for release in 2013.

Rob Reiner Directing Horror/Thriller You Belong to Me

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just a few days after landing an acting role in The Wolf of Wall Street, THR reports that Rob Reiner is set to head into thriller territory directing You Belong To Me. David Murray wrote the screenplay, which is being compared to the 1991 thriller Cape Fear.

The story centers on a psychiatrist, who commits the cardinal sin of telling patients about himself, and ends up being stalked by one of them. This marks the director’s return to horror/thrillers for the first time since 1990’s Misery. Here’s what the filmmaker had to say about coming back to genre fare, “They are hard to make well, but this one has a deep psychological bent to it and a big twist in the end that I didn’t see coming. That’s why I decided to take a whack at this one.”

The project is on the fast track, with casting starting up immediately for the four lead roles: the psychiatrist, his wife, their daughter, and the patient. Shooting is scheduled to begin this fall in New York City.

Brave Conquers The US Box Office

June 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brave has continued Pixar’s impressive box office run, becoming the studio’s 13th straight movie to debut at number one on the box office chart. The film took $66.7 million in its first three days, ahead of expectations, which had suggested it would open in the $55-$60 million range. It’s great news for the studio, especially after slightly disappointing box office for last year’s Cars 2.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter had less to cheer about, as after a string of bad reviews, it took only $16.5 million to place third on the cart, behind the second weekend of Madagascar 3. As the film cost $70 million, it’s only chance of recouping its costs now lie with strong home video sales, especially as its resolutely American topic may make it an even tougher sell internationally.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was the Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley film Seeking A Friend At The End Of The World, which took just $3.8 million to place 10th. It’s undoubtedly disappointing as the hope had been that the presence of Carrell would at least provide a boost.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Brave $66.7 $66.7
2 Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted $20.2 $157.5
3 Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter $16.5 $16.5
4 Prometheus $10.0 $108.5
5 Rock Of Ages $8.0 $28.7
6 Show White And The Huntsman $8.0 $137.1
7 That’s My Boy $7.9 $28.1
8 The Avengers $7.0 $598.3
9 Men In Black 3 $5.6 $163.3
10 Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World $3.8 $3.8

New UK Brave Trailer – Pixar goes Celtic

June 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Those lucky Yanks get to watch Pixar’s latest, Brave, from today, as it’s just been released in cinemas over there. Us Brits have to wait a while, with it reaching Scottish cinemas on August 3rd and the rest of the UK on August 17th, but to help us bide our time, Disney has released a brand new trailer for the film, giving us our best look at it yet. Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘A grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor, “Brave” uncovers a new tale in the mysterious Highlands of Scotland where the impetuous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) defies an age-old custom and inadvertently unleashes chaos, forcing her to discover the meaning of true bravery before it’s too late.’

Max Minghella Heads For The Internship

June 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Internship will start shooting next month, and so director Shawn Levy is busy putting together the supporting cast, with Variety reporting that Max Minghella, Josh Brener, Tiya Sircar and Torbit Raphael are all in various stages of talks for roles in the movie.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are set to star as two old-school salesmen who, finding themselves suddenly unemployed and passed-by in the digital world, try to reinvent themselves by becoming interns at a major tech company.

Social Network and Darkest Hour star Minghella will play a ruthlessly competitive fellow intern who wants to sabotage who he sees as older intruders. Josh Brenner meanwhile will be one of the other newcomers, who helps our heroes out. It’s now known who Sircar or Raphael will play.

Casey Affleck Helming Josh Hamilton Baseball Biopic

June 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Casey Affleck feels that the story of Texas Rangers baseball player Josh Hamilton is worth making a movie out of, as Deadline reports that Affleck wants to direct a film about him. Indeed, it could make a pretty good flick.

As a young baseball player serving in the minor leagues, Hamilton was in a severe car accident that left both of his parents and himself severely injured. Though everyone involved made a complete recovery, Hamilton then found himself starting to use excessive amounts of drugs and alcohol, starting with cocaine and eventually crack. In and out of rehab, he ended up failing drug tests and was suspended from baseball for his behaviour and eventually got kicked out. After years of hard work and rehab, however, Hamilton fought his way back, was re-invited to the majors, and is now considered one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball.

It’s quite a story, and would mark Affleck’s narrative feature debut (following the semi-fictional I’m Still There).

Charlie Sheen Joins Machete Kills As The US President

June 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I think it’s safe to say that if Charlie Sheen ever ran for President, he wouldn’t win, but he’s getting to rule the free world vicariously, as director Robert Rodriguez has revealed on his Twitter account that he’s cast Sheen as the US President in Machete Kills, and he ever tweeted a photo to prove it (see right).

Shooting is currently underway on Machete Kills, with Danny Trejo once more starring as the all-action title character. We don’t know what Sheen will be doing as the President, but he joins a cast that also includes Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba and Tom Savini.

It’s set to hit cinemas next year.
