Duncan Jones Directing Ian Fleming Biopic

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Duncan Jones, the BAFTA Award-winning British director of Moon and Source Code is set to direct the action-packed story of one of Britain’s most celebrated yet mysterious legends – James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

Before Ian Fleming became a globally renowned best-selling author, his own life was no less exciting than that of the hero he created. Ian Fleming traveled the world and masterminded real life top-secret operations, inspiring him to create James Bond. Duncan Jones’ take will explore and tie together those events in the author’s life that gave birth to Britain’s greatest superspy.

Jones remarked: “Ian Fleming lived through one of the most perilous periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique vantage point of all the players, all the stakes. He witnesses true heroism first-hand. And he saw the evil men could do. Then, when the war ended, he went off to write fiction. The essential question for me is; where did Ian Fleming end and Bond begin?”

Duncan Jones is currently in the process of casting the film, which is based on the authoritative biography ‘Ian Fleming, The Man Behind James Bond’ by Andrew Lycett, and is anticipated to go into production later this year. It is the only film to be given the full support of The Ian Fleming Estate.

Simon Pegg Joins Hector & The Search for Happiness

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actor Simon Pegg has closed a deal to star in the wordily titled Hector and the Search for Happiness, for Serendipity and Shall We Dance director Peter Chelsom, according to Variety.

Tinker Lindsay and Chelsom are adapting the Francis Lelord novel, which centres on a London psychiatrist, who goes on a global quest when his patients can’t find happiness.

The British born Peter Chelsom commented, “I’ve been searching long and hard for a film that would bring me back to my European sensibilities. Not unlike Being There and Forrest Gump, Hector is a contemporary love story, a fable wrapped around a very human hero’s journey. Nobody does the innocent abroad better than Simon Pegg: he is not only a brilliant comedian but a very touching actor. He is the Hector that you want to follow to the ends of the earth.”

It’s not certain exactly when the movie might shoot.

Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy Go Buddy Cop

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy could make quite a female comedy team, and Variety says it’s going to happen, as they’ve both signed on to star in an untitled buddy cop movie for director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids).

Parks and Recreation scribe Katie Dippold wrote the script, which is about the unconventional partnership between a straight-laced FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) and an eccentric Boston cop (Melissa McCarthy). There aren’t any more details than that at the moment. It won’t be Bullock’s first time as an FBI agent, as she played one in the Miss Congeniality movies.

It isn’t known when it might shoot.

Avengers Sinks Battleship At US Box Office

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Avengers once again smashed allcomers at the US box office, taking another $55 million over the weekend to take its total to an incredibly impressive $457 million. It believed that its continued success at attracting repeat business is one of the reasons Universal’s Battleship opened to a disappointing $25 million, well below the $35-$40 million that had been expected.

It’s a big blow to the film, which may have made $200 million outside the US, but is unlikely to break $100 million in America, ensuring the film will make a loss. So while Universal was hoping for a Transformers style franchise, that’s no longer likely to happen.

It wasn’t the only film that underplayed as The Dictator took $17 million over the weekend for a total of $25 million since it opened last Wednesday. Thankfully though, it took $45 million overseas in the terriories it opened in, ensuring that while the US has been weak, it should make a profit worldwide.

Even a film designed to attract a very different audience to the male dominated summer blockbusters failed to attract an audience, with What To Expect When You’re Expecting taking just $10.5 million. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 18th-20th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Avengers $55.0 $457.0
2 Battleship $25.3 $25.3
3 The Dictator $17.4 $24.4
4 Dark Shadows $12.7 $50.9
5 What To Expect When You’re Expecting $10.5 $10.5
6 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $3.2 $8.2
7 The Hunger Games $3.0 $391.6
8 Think Like A Man $2.7 $85.8
9 The Lucky One $1.7 $56.9
10 The Pirates! Band Of Misfits $1.4 $25.3

New Magic Mike UK Trailer – Fresh look at the star-filled male stripper flick

May 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ll be the first to admit we’ve become a bit obsessed with Magic Mike here at BGPS, but there’s been a lot of interest in Magic Mike, and not just for the prurient voyeurism of seeing the likes of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello and Alex Pettyfer playing stripper. it’s also because it’s a rare case of Hollywood looking at men as sexual objects in a way that’s normally reserved for women. But let’s not get too sociological, as the intrigue is mainly about seeing actors gets their stripper on.

Here’s the synopsis, ‘To a rebellious 19-year-old kid (Pettyfer) looking for independence from his family, Magic Mike (Tatum) seems like the perfect role model: he’s got a nice car, a nice apartment, and a seemingly endless supply of women. What’s his secret? He’s a male stripper, and when the kid dives headlong into Magic Mike’s world, his mad dancing skills and hunger for excitement make for an unforgettable summer…Sexy, funny and shocking, this film is a hedonistic thrill ride with a powerful undertow. A razor sharp cast – led by top liner Channing Tatum in a career-defining turn as the titular Magic Mike devours the up-to-the moment freight train of a script, and the result will be relentlessly entertaining and sure to be one of the most talked about films of the year…… and let’s not forget the price-of-admission dancing sequences…’ It hits UK cinemas on July 13th.
