Matt Bomer with Simon Halls, who’s now to be known as ‘Phyllis’
NOTE: For anyone who hadn’t guessed, this was an April Fool’s Day article and not real, designed to satirise the idea Bomer can’t play whatever role he’s able, just because of his sexuality – especially while others hide in the closet to ‘protect’ their careers.
It seems actor Matt Bomer has had second thoughts about letting the world know he’s gay, as he’s decided to go back in the closet. He revealed his sexuality last February at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, and has since given interviews about growing up gay and closeted.
At first it didn’t seem the news had affected his career, with the actor’s TV series, White Collar, seeing continued success, many swooning over his booty-shaking role in Magic Mike, and landing the role of Superman in an animated movie. He also took a shirtless guest spot on The New Normal and signed up to play gay in Ryan Murphy’s The Normal Heart.
However last August Bret Easton Ellis decided that Bomer was ‘too gay’ to play Christian Grey in a 50 Shades Of Grey movie. That, along with the fact he doesn’t seem to be allowed to do a film or TV episode without getting his shirt off, has prompted his decision to go back in the closet.
He released a statement saying, ‘Although I came out last year, I would now like everyone to forget the fact that I’m gay, as it doesn’t really make any difference to my career and the roles I can play. As a result, I would appreciate it if from now on the press could refer to my partner, Simon Halls, as ‘the definitely a female Phyllis’.
‘I thought perhaps that coming out would let people know I’m not ashamed and that this is just part of life, but just in case it becomes a distraction or there are any philistines who’ve knocked me off their casting lists purely because I’m gay, I liked everyone to now think I’m straight.
‘There are plenty of actors I know are gay, but who are constantly in the newspapers with stories about all the ‘dates’ they’ve gone on with women, so why should I miss out? After all, there’s not much to write about when I’m just at home with Simon (sorry, ‘the definitely a female Phyllis’) and the kids. Who knows, if I go back in the closet, perhaps in a few years they can make a movie about me and how tortured I was being in the closet’.

Clint Eastwood loves music and is seems he really wants to make a music-based project next. He has been planning to do a remake of A Star Is Born, but that got delayed when Beyoncé dropped out of the lead role. Now
Many thought that after the first GI Joe film failed to set the box office alight, that would be the last we’d see of it on the big screen, but the franchise has returned with GI Joe: Retaliation. The movie may have opened lower than its predecessor, taking $54 million versus $41 million in its opening weekend (although Retaliation can add another $10 million from Thursday), but it’s more than many had thought.
