Ellen Page Set To Star In Real-life Lesbian Drama

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The documentary short Freeheld, about a landmark LGBT equality case, won an Oscar. Now plans are moving forward to turn it into a feature film, and according to Deadline, it’ll star Ellen Page. A new production company called Incognito Pictures has stepped up to finance the movie, which has a script by Ron Nyswaner (Philadephia), so it seems it really will get made.

Page is attached to play mechanic Stacie Andree, who was denied the pension benefits of her longtime partner and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester, when the latter became terminally ill. While Hester’s detective partner Dane Wells was conservative and surprised to learn of Hester’s orientation, Wells stepped up to become the leader in the fight for Laurel’s rights to assign her benefits to Andree.

Cynthia Wade, who directed the 2007 short, will serve as one of the feature film’s producers.

James Franco Pays Homage To Cruising With ‘Homo-Sex-Art-Film’

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m starting to feel my gayness is rather inadequate compared to James Franco’s, and he doesn’t even sleep with men! Last month rumours circulated that Franco was planning to make a ‘Homo-Sex-Art-Film’ with director Travis Mathews. Now more details of that film have emerged, and it turns out it’s a homage to the controversial 1980 Al Pacino movie, Cruising.

William Friedkin’s film sparked controversy even before it was shot, and protesters attempted to disrupt filming on what they saw as a movie that would paint gay people as S&M obsessed perverts one step away from being psychopathic serial murderers. The film is slightly more complex than that (although it’s certainly not a great promo for being gay, and had to have a disclaimer added to the beginning saying it wasn’t suggesting all homosexuals were depraved), with hints that as Pacino’s cop investigates the S&M underworld investigating a serial killer, he gets increasingly drawn into it.

To get a cinema release, Friedkin is said to have had to cut 40 minutes of more graphic footage from Cruising, which apparently depicts just how deep Pacino’s character went into the underbelly of the gay S&M world. Franco’s collaboration with Travis Mathews is an imagined recreation of that lost footage.

Director Travis Mathews

Initially Franco wanted to update Cruising, but he couldn’t secure the remake rights. Instead he sought out a director who had previously filmed real gay sex, to help him make a homage. Mathews, who featured explicit sex scenes in his gay drama I Want Your Love, fitted the bill. After some initial discussions, filming quickly followed and Mathews turned over an initial cut to Franco after just two months. The film, ‘James Franco’s Cruising’, features both James and Mathews and looks at both the lost 40 minutes of Cruising, as well as try to look at how people see Franco as a star figure.

“[James] knew he wanted real gay sex in it,” Mathews tells Indiewire. “His people went looking for a filmmaker who had filmed real gay sex, and I suspect someone who would complement his vision. We talked about why we would be interested in still looking at this film.  We talked about his interest in the film and his interest more broadly in so many gay-themed stories and visionairies. He’s worked with so many in front of and behind the cameras over the years.”
Mathews (left) and Franco both appear in the movie, a fictional re-creation of 40 minutes which was originally ut from the film to appease the MPAA and secure an R rating.

“[Friedkin] cut the film down at his own expense,” Mathews said. “Recently, when he was getting ready to do an anniversary edition, Warner Bros. told him that the footage was destroyed. It’s possible those 40 minutes implicate Pacino’s character in the gay S&M culture. That was the place we started from as a launching point: James Franco’s version of those lost 40 minutes.”

Mathews believes that while Cruising is still vilified by many as a stain on LGBT-themed cinema , it’s time for a bit of a re-evaluation. He says “The interesting thing about that movie is it gets short-circuited a bit too quickly in people’s eyes. If you forget about the whole murder mystery backstory and you just look at the bar scenes, I think it’s quite an insightful, important document of an important subculture, right before AIDS hits, in 1979 New York.”

Franco’s fascination with gay male culture seems pretty profound. He’s played gays in films like Milk and Howl, directed the gay bio-pics The Broken Tower (about poet Hart Crane) and Sal (about actor Sal Mineo), released the queer short The Feast of Stephen, and even appeared in drag for the cover of Candy magazine. Where the interest comes from isn’t clear, but it’s something he doesn’t seem to want to give up on.

Mathews hopes to debut the finished cut of ‘James Franco’s Cruising’ early in 2013. An installation version of the footage will play at a group show in a gallery beginning September 12.

The Knot Trailer – Mena Suvari & Noel Clarke take on a wedding comedy

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m pretty sure women didn’t burn their bras in the 1960s so that nearly all films made for a female audience could be about weddings, but it’s an oddly popular subgenre, even if they’re getting more indentikit as time goes on. The latest is The Knot, which mixes UK and American talent for a bit of a wedding comedy. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Knot is a romantic comedy starring a host of British and American acting talent; including Mena Suvari (American Beauty, American Pie), Talulah Riley (St Trinian’s, Pride & Prejudice), Matthew McNulty (Control, Looking for Eric) Noel Clarke (Centurion, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll), Jason Maza (Fish Tank, Shifty) and Juliet Oldfield (Bronson).

‘Soul mates Alexandra (Talulah Riley) and Jeremy (Matthew McNulty) are getting married. At least that’s the plan. Unfortunately for them, nonchalant best man Peter (Noel Clarke), bridesmaid Sarah (Mena Suvari) and an army of naysayers haven’t heard they’re meant to be together. Can missing bridesmaids, crashed cars, a trip to A&E, and a delivery of pig’s testicles stand in the way of true love?’

James Franco, Mila Kunis & Casey Affleck Set For Third Person

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Will Make Her Film Debut In Maleficent

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Filming started in June on Walt Disney Pictures’ Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie playing the title character. Today, the studio revealed that the actress’ four-year-old daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, has been cast as the young Princess Aurora.

Here’s the official announcement, “The Walt Disney Studios confirmed today that Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne will play a minor role as the child version of Princess Aurora opposite her mother in Maleficent, which hits theatres March 2014. The live-action film explores the origins of Disney’s most iconic villain, Maleficent, and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty.”

Elle Fanning stars as the older Princess Aurora, with Sharlto Copley portraying King Stefan. Robert Stromberg makes his directorial debut, working from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland). Casting four-year-old Vivienne as Princess Aurora does give an interesting hint at where the plot is going, and raises the possibility that in this film, Aurora is actually the daughter of Maleficent.

First Poster For Spielberg’s Lincoln Debuts

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first poster has popped up online for Spielberg’s biopic Lincoln, which stars Daniel Day-Lewis as the famed president.

The movie is going to ignore Lincoln’s vampire fighting exploits and concentrate on the non-supernatural, focussing on the time around the Civil War. Spielberg was recently quoted as saying, “Our movie is really about a working leader who must make tough decisions and get things done in the face of overwhelming opposition… [The film begins with] Lincoln’s realization that the Emancipation Proclamation, the thing he is most known for, was simply a war powers act that would easily be struck down by any number of lawyers after the cessation of hostilities after the Civil War. He needed to abolish slavery by constitutional measure — and that’s where we start.”

Now a poster has arrived, a trailer can’t be far behind, so expect to see that soon. Lincoln is due to hit the UK on January 25th, 2013.

Commercials Director Adam Berg Set To Remake Videodrome

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you’ve never directed a movie before, it takes a fair amount of chutzpah to take on a remake of a classic body horror by David Cronenberg, but Universal Pictures is moving forward on its languishing remake of David Cronenberg’s Videodrome, hiring commercial director Adam Berg to make his feature directorial debut with the film.

The remake was first announced back in April 2009, when Universal brought on Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) to write the screenplay. The original starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83. He injects new life into the network by airing a program dubbed Videodrome, which depicts gruesome murders and other violent acts that have a unique and rather unsettling effect on viewers. The 2009 reports suggested they planned to include nano-technology and make this a massive action sci-fi thriller.

Adam Berg has won numerous awards for his commercials and short films, such as the Film Grand Prix award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. There’s no news on when the Videodrome do-over might shoot. (Source: Deadline)

All You Need Is Kill Adds Charlotte Riley

August 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Cruise is going to be hanging round quite a few British women on the set of All You Need Is Kill, as Emily Blunt has already signed up to co-star, and now she’s been joined by Tom Hardy’s fiance, Charlotte Riley (and just for the fact she gets to sleep with Tom, we hate her). It’ll be her first major role within the Hollywood system.

The movie is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s graphic novel, which is about a soldier who is killed during an on-going war between human and alien forces. He mysteriously keeps reliving his last day on Earth over and over again, eventually becoming a better soldier each time he steps into battle – sort of Groundhog Day meets a video-game. Charlotte Riley plays a fellow soldier fighting alongside Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Doug Liman will direct from an adapted screenplay by D.W. Harper, with Joby Harold performing the most recent rewrite. Shooting is scheduled to begin this autumn in London.
