Chronicle’s Max Landis Sells Space Adventure To Disney

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Chronicle, about a group of teens with extraordinary powers, hasn’t been released yet, it already has enough buzz that Max ‘son of John’ Landis that Disney has pre-emptively bought his pitch for a space set adventure.

Variety doesn’t have many more details than that, other than it’ll follow “the emotional journey of a brother and sister as they undertake an epic adventure.” Disney is apparently looking at it as a potential franchise with merchandising potential, as the studio feels the need to get more projects like that under it belt. In fact it does seem at the moment the House Of Mouse is only buying ideas they might later be able to turn into an exciting theme park ride.

It’s not the only project Landis has going, as he’s got a Frankenstein tale and a new take on the Pied Piper Of Hamelin at Fox and the adventure thriller Amnesty at Universal, which Ron Howard is attached to direct. Then there’s action comedy Good Time Gang, which has Mark Wahlberg and Jonah Hill on board to play mercenaries. While there’s good buzz about Chronicle, you have to feel having John Landis as a dad is helping Max’s career go stratospheric.

Surviving Pythons Reuniting For Absolutely Anything

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Graham Chapman’s death in 1989, the surviving members of Monty Python haven’t done all that much that’s involved all of them, however John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin are reteaming for a new project.

Variety reports that Jones is working on a new live-action/CG comedy called Absolutely Anything, and while we won’t get to see the Pythons on screen, we will hear their voices. They’re set to play ‘a group of aliens who endow an earthling with the power to do “absolutely anything” to see what a mess he’ll make of things.’

Jones hasn’t directed anything since 1996’s The Wind In The Willows, but it appears he’s been working on this new movie (on and off) every since, alongside screenwriter Gavin Scott. All the Pythons have agreed to take part, except for Eric Idle, but it’s said the producers are working on him.

Also onboard is Robin Williams, who’s set to play a talking dog who seems to understand more about the mayhem that ensues than anyone else does. He could also play another role, “a pompous Frenchman reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau.”

Jones says about the movie, “it’s not a Monty Python picture, but it certainly has that sensibility.”

Martin Freeman & Noel Clarke Are Saving Santa

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

You’d have thought that after Arthur Christmas the British animation industry might have wanted to steer clear of festive flicks for a while, but Gateway Films, the company behind Adulthood & Shank are planning one called Saving Santa.

The voice cast has now been revealed, via Variety, with Martin Freeman, Noel Clarke and Tim Curry, alongside the likes of Joan Collins, Pam Ferris, Craig Fairbass and Chris Barrie. Freeman is set to play a clumsy elf who has to rescue Santa’s HQ when its location is discovered by a nasty villain. Ricky Roxburgh has written the script and Leon Joosen is directing.

Gateway is now looking for a studio partner to handle distribution rights.

Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener Join Frank or Francis

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Any film that involves Charlie Kaufman is worth keeping an eye out for. The screenwriter of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation is planning his second directorial outing (after Synecdoche New York), and now actresses Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener have signed on to star in Frank or Francis, according to Vulture.

The story centres around an online war that develops between a successful filmmaker (Steve Carell) and a movie blogger (Jack Black). Nicolas Cage is also onbaord as The Emcee, an actor known for commercial successes such as Fat Dad, while Kevin Kline stars as the director’s brother. Unfortunately no details are known about Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener’s characters.

Interestingly, both Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener were nominated for Academy Awards in movies Charlie Kaufman wrote. Kate Winslet was nominated for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Catherine Keener received a nod for Charlie Kaufman’s debut, Being John Malkovich.

Paul Giamatti Set To Play Friar Lawrence In Romeo & Juliet

January 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We haven’t heard much about the planned new live-action version of Romeo & Juliet for a while. Earlier reports suggested the movie would film last summer, but that obviously didn’t happen. However things are still moving forward as Variety reports that Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of Carlo Carlei’s take on Shakespeare’s play.

The actor will play Friar Lawrence, who serves as an adviser to the title characters (Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth). Holly Hunter is set to portray Nurse, while Ed Westwick and Kodi Smit-McPhee play cousins Tybalt and Mercutio.

Carlo Carlei is directing Romeo and Juliet from a screenplay by Julian Fellowes. The project is described as Romeo and Juliet for the Twilight generation. Production is scheduled to start later this month on location in Mantua Italy and Rome’s Cinecitta Studios.

Little Joe Launches Film Club With Hockney In A Bigger Splash

January 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Little Joe bills itself as ‘a magazine about queers and cinema, mostly’, tending towards the more hip and avant garde end of the spectrum. It’s taking its concept a little further by launching A Little Film Club, a monthly screening programme in London, supported by Film London’s new Community Pilot Fund scheme.

A Little Film Club will alternate between The Cinema Museum in Kennington and the Rio Cinema in Dalston and hopes to be ‘an unique space for the exhibition and discussion of films that inspire alternative discourse. Incorporating an eclectic programme of films mapping the subterranean queer canon of cinema, the screenings will also feature extended introductions, discussions and social events’.

The club launches 6.30pm, Tuesday 31st January at the Cinema Museum with Jack Hazan’s A Bigger Splash, a unique insight into the world of David Hockney at the height of his fame during the 1970s. To ensure the event is a little bit more special, Jack Hazan himself will be in conversation with Stuart Comer (Curator of Film at Tate Modern) following the screening.

Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London said: “Film London is delighted to support Little Joe’s screening programme via the new Community Pilot Fund. The fund is set up to allow us to support new and innovative community based projects that will extend the cultural film offer to audiences across the capital and we look forward to working with Little Joe to achieve this.”

So if you’re in London town and fancy broadening your film horizons, head on down to the Cinema Museum on Tuesday.

The Saint May Return To The Silver Screen

January 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Saint is one of those perennial franchises that always seems like it could make a decent TV series or film, and as a result every so often someone tries to reboot it. The latest to do so is RKO Pictures (which does still exist, despite the fact it ostensibly stopped making movies in the 1950s), which owns the rights to several of the origins Saint movies, starting with The Saint In New York in 1938 and running through eight more movies in the late 30s and early 40s (the character originated in Leslie Charteris’ books in the 30s).

Now Variety reports that RKO has hired Travis Wright to write a new script based on the character, in the hope of creating a new film franchise. The Saint is, of course, Simon Templar, a suave, Robin Hood-type thief, who uses his nefarious skills to fight the good fight and bring down corrupt politicians and businessmen.

The character is perhaps best known from the 1960s TV series starring Roger Moore, which then led to the Return Of The Saint series in the late 70s, starring Ian Ogilvy. In 1997 the character was brought to the big screen with Val Kilmer in the title role, but that film failed to find an audience.

Whether this new movie will ever get made remains to be seen, but The Saint is a strong character so it’s worth trying.

Spielberg Closing In On Moses Biopic Gods & Kings

January 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last September it was reported that Warner Bros. was trying to get Steven Spielberg interested in a new take on the story of Moses. While the director was intrigued, it wasn’t certain whether he’d take on the epic movie. Now a new report from Deadline suggests the project is moving closer and that Spielberg may direct the film in 2013.

Spielberg is apparently in final negotiations with Warner for the biopic, which is currently title Gods and Kings. The project is described as a Braveheart-ish version of the Moses story, and will be far from a reboot of Cecil B. DeMille 1956 epic, The Ten Commandments. The plan is for Spielberg to bring a bit of the Saving Private Ryan aesthetic to the story: ”There have been glossy versions of the Moses story but this would be a real warrior story,” an ‘insider’ told Deadline. Stuart Hazeldine and Michael Green are writing the script.

Spielberg is currently finishing up his Lincoln biopic, with Robopocalypse next on his list (and expected to shoot later this year).

Chloe Sevigny Added To Lovelace

January 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lovelace started shooting recently, but it appears it hasn’t quite finished casting, as Variety reports Chloë Sevigny has signed up to join the cast. She’s set to play Rebecca, a feminist journalist on freelance assignment for a men’s magazine, who sets out to find out who the real Linda Lovelace is.

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl, The Celluloid Closet) are directing from an original screenplay by Andy Bellin (Trust). From the birth of the sexual revolution to the height of the feminist movement, Lovelace depicts the life of Linda Boreman who as ‘Linda Lovelace’ became the first erotic superstar in the 1970s. However Linda later renounced porn and claimed her time in the industry was virtual slavery due to her domineering husband.

Amanda Seyfried is playing the title role, with Peter Sarsgaard as her husband, Chuck Traynor. Sevigny joins a cast including Debi Mazar, Cory Hardrict, Adam Brody, Eric Roberts, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Wes Bentley, Sharon Stone and Juno Temple.

Russell Brand Set To Be The Hauntrepreneur

January 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actor Russell Brand certainly seems to want to make a spooky tale. Last year he signed onto and then left an adaptation of Brit TV show Rentaghost and now he has joined the supernatural tale The Hauntrepreneur for Paramount Pictures, according to Variety. We first reported on this project back in May, when Paramount and Platinum Dunes boarded the project.

The slightly Beetlejuice-esque movie is about a family who move to a new town but can’t quite adjust to their surroundings. They hire a man known as the The Hauntrepreneur (Russell Brand), who builds them a haunted house full of bizarre characters, which helps bring the family closer together.

With Brand onboard, the studio is looking to lock down a director next. It isn’t known when the movie might shoot.
