The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Blu-ray Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland
Director: Francis Lawrence
Running Time: 137 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 was an entertaining movie but there’s no doubt that it largely felt like it was laying the groundwork and building us up for Part 2. Now that film is coming to Blu-ray, so that those who didn’t catch it in cinemas can find out how the struggle between the Districts and the Capitol ends.

Panem is now in full-scale Civil War, with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) having been enrolled as the Mockingjay, a figurehead that District 13 President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) wants to use for propaganda purposes. However, all Katniss really wants is to kill President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the hope it will bring everything to an end. She also becomes increasingly suspicious of Coin, concerned that if she takes control after the Capitol collapses, they could be simply replacing one despot with another. [Read more…]

Black Mass (Blu-ray Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons
Director: Scott Cooper
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

At the beginning of Black Mass I was worried that the whole thing was going to be spoiled by Johnny Depp’s makeup, or more particularly the ridiculously blue contact lenses he wears as part of his efforts to make himself look like the real James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. Thankfully, relatively quickly you get used to it, helped by the fact this is the best performance Depp has given in years.

The movie tells the real-life tale of Bulger, who grew up on the tough streets of South Boston before becoming a gangster and the leader of the vicious Winter Hill Gang. His childhood friend, John Connolly (Joes Edgerton), is now an FBI agent, who comes up with a plan he thinks can help the feds take down the Mafia and other parts of Boston’s organised crime. He wants to get Bulger to turn informant, in return for the FBI turning a blind eye to his gang’s activities. [Read more…]

Steve Jobs (DVD Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston
Director: Danny Boyle
Running Time: 122 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

I’m starting to think that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has decided he’s a complete prick, and so has set out to write things that suggest that being the best and being an ass go hand-in-hand. The likes of The Social Network, Steve Jobs and, to some extent, The Newsroom and Studio 60 On Sunset Strip have all forwarded this agenda. Rumours suggest Sorkin can be incredibly demanding and difficult to work with (stories of how tough it was in the writer’s room of The West Wing and how little he listened to other peoples’ ideas are legendary), and it’s oddly interesting how so many of his projects seem to be about his own issues with this.

What he never quite addresses though is something he puts in the mouth of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in Steven Jobs, who tells the demanding and difficult Steve that being talented and being a decent person are not mutually exclusive. However, in the world of Aaron Sorkin, it often feels like they are. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Get Off The Grind – How would the world survive without Grindr?

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

get-off-the-grindI wonder whether this short was inspired by the ‘incident’ a month or two ago when Grindr went down for an hour or two and you’d have thought the gay apocalypse had arrived. Perhaps that’s a bit strong, but people did get very exercised about it.

Get Off The Grind imagines a world where Grindr and its ilk are no longer available and gay people suddenly have to find something else to with their lives. Perhaps most horrifyingly, if they want to meet people, they have to do so in person! I know, it’s barbaric.

The short is pretty fun and only just over four minutes long, so take a look at it below.

The Shallows Trailer – Blake Lively doesn’t wanna get eaten by a shark

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shallows-trailer-slidePoor old sharks – they’re just hungry or curious, and we make such a fuss when they try to eat us. The latest to start whining when a large fish wants to bite her is Blake Lively in The Shallows, which has just dropped its first trailer.

Here’s the brief synopsis: ‘A young Woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark.’

I’m not entirely sure that when you’re a shark is trying to eat you it makes much different if your mother died recently or not, but I’m sure it’s very important in the world of metaphor. The movie will be in cinemas in July. [Read more…]

Simon Pegg Up For Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

simon-peggThe cast of Spielberg’s Ready Player One continues to grow, with THR reporting that Simon Pegg has signed up for the movie. He joins Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn and Tye Sheridan, who’s set to be the lead character of Wade Watts.

The movie will be based on Ernie Cline’s novel. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.’

Pegg is in talks to play Ogden Morrow, the co-creator of OASIS. The film should be in cinemas December 15th, 2017, with shooting expected to start in the next few months.

New X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – What happens when mutants start to believe they’re gods?

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xmen_Apocalypse_CampD_Defend-slideThe timeline may have been reset with X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of problems between man and mutant – or more particularly in Apocalypse between mutant and mutant. Now a new trailer has dropped which suggests this is going to be one hell of a battle.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.’

It’ll be in cinemas May 18th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Genius Trailer – Colin Firth plays the man who helped discover Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald & Thomas Wolfe

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

geniusGenius has been in the works for a long time – Colin Firth first attached himself to it back in 2012 – but it’s only now that it’s in the can and the first trailer for the movie has arrived. While a movie about a book editor doesn’t sound that interesting, as it’s about a man who helped the likes of Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald get published, it’s certainly got potential.

The film doesn’t concentrate on either of those authors though, instead focusing on the birth of Thomas Wolfe as a literary force.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award-nominated screenwriter JOHN LOGAN (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo, Skyfall) and acclaimed, Tony Award-winning director MICHAEL GRANDAGE in his feature film debut, comes Genius, a stirring drama about the complex friendship and transformative professional relationship between the world-renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway) and the larger-than-life literary giant Thomas Wolfe. Based on the biography “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius” by A. SCOTT BERG, Genius stars COLIN FIRTH as Perkins, JUDE LAW as Wolfe, NICOLE KIDMAN as Aline Bernstein, a costume designer sharing a tumultuous relationship with Wolfe, LAURA LINNEY as Louise Perkins, Max’s wife and a talented playwright, GUY PEARCE as F. Scott Fitzgerald and DOMINIC WEST as Ernest Hemingway.’

The film will be out later this year. [Read more…]

Guillermo Del Toro Directing A Cold War Romance With Sally Hawkins & Octavia Spencer

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Guillermo-del-ToroNot much is known about Guillermo Del Toro’s next movie, but we do now know that it’s a Cold War romance, which has Sally Hawkins attached to star, with Octavia Spencer in talks to join her, according to Variety and THR. Shooting will start this summer.

Del Toro had been weighing up several options for his next film, but apparently this one was always top of the list. Story details are been kept secret, but it’s believed that it’s ‘a mysterious and magical journey set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963 with an otherworldly love story at the center of it.’

Del Toro also wrote the script for the movie, so it’s little surprise it will mix the real with the fantastical. He’s also still working on a Pacific Rim sequel, but that’s taking longer to put together than originally planned.

Documentary The Boy from Mushin, About A Nigerian Man Who Came Out As Gay On TV, Seeks Funding

March 16, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-from-mushinMany African counties remain deeply homophobic. While there has been some attention paid to the situation for LGBT people in nations such as Uganda (due to its planned law to make ‘aggravated’ homosexuality an executable face), there are many other countries on the continent where gay sex is illegal and coming out puts your life at risk due to a deeply homophobic society.

The documentary, The Boy from Mushin, hopes to tell the story of one Nigerian man who did come out, live on TV, and ended up leaving the country due the the fallout. However, to complete filming and editing, it’s hoping to raise $35,000 via Kickstarter, but it’s only got a few days left to do so.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Boy from Mushin is a feature length documentary, telling the story of Bisi Alimi, a man who put his life on the line when he chose to come out as gay live on Nigerian national television.

‘In 2004 when the president of Nigeria claimed that there were “no gays in Nigeria”, Funmi Iyanda, interviewed Bisi about his sexuality on her popular television show, New Dawn. The fury that followed tore Bisi’s world apart – alienating him from his family and friends and subjecting him to years of hateful attacks. Funmi’s show was pulled off air, and Bisi’s proud declaration was debated in Parliament.

‘Bisi left Nigeria an exile and arrived in London a refugee. From the streets of Mushin, one of the poorest slums of Lagos, Nigeria, he has become one of Africa’s most prominent human rights activists. This film tells his story: following him as he returns to Nigeria for the first time ever since he was exiled almost 8 years ago.

‘This is a film not only about a courageous man trying to change the world, but a window into the lives of other courageous gay men and women that are fighting tirelessly for acceptance and equality across Africa. It tells a complex story where race, gender, sexuality and populist politics intersect in Nigeria – a story that affects the lives of African LGBT people, but also has an impact in the global north, from conducting business in Nigeria, to tourism and issues of immigration where LGBT people are concerned.’

You can take a look a look at the trailer/fundraising video below, and if it’s a project you’d like to help out with, head over to Kickstarter. The movie is still short of its target, and with an important story to tell, it would be a shame if it didn’t make it. [Read more…]
