Wilde (Blu-ray Review)

December 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Stephen Fry, Jude Law, Tom Wilkinson, Michael Sheen, Jennifer Ehle
Director: Brian Gilbert
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 14th 2015 (UK)

I’m almost surprised 1997’s Wilde hasn’t made it to Blu-ray in the UK before, but it’s now arrived, giving us an HD look at the biopic of legendary writer and wit Oscar Wilde, as played by Stephen Fry. At the beginning of the movie Oscar is already well-known and meets the pretty young Constance (Jennifer Ehle), whom he marries.

However, there is another side of him, initially brought out by Robbie Ross (Michael Sheen), that seeks the emotional and physical intimacy of men. Oscar begins to see it rather like the Greek ideal, where he is the older man, passing down knowledge to his ‘boys’, as well as sleeping with them. Then he meets the beautiful Lord Alfred Douglas (Jude Law), known as Bosie – and if you’ve ever seen pics of the real Bosie, he was very good looking – and the two fall for one another. [Read more…]

Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer – Mankind is under attack once more

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

independence-day-resugence-slide1Having talked about it ever the first Independence Day became a gargantuan hit in 1996, we are finally getting a sequel, Resurgence, which has just released its first trailer. Many of the old face return, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner, along with a new generation, led by Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth.

Will Smith isn’t returning, but the aliens sure are, and this promo certainly wants to be a bit dark and moody, although right at the end suggests it will retain the humour that helped make the first one a hit. They’re also certainly keen to suggest that things are getting bigger.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.  Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.  Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.’

Take a look below.

Vacation (Blu-ray Review)

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Chris Hemsworth, Leslie Mann, Chevy Chase
Director: John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein
Running Time: 99 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 14th 2015 (UK)

The reboot of the Vacation series didn’t get a vast amount of love from critics at the cinema. It meant that, as I often don’t even like comedies others do think are good, I approached this one with a bit of trepidation and little hope that I’d enjoy it. However, I was pleasantly surprised that while by no means a masterpiece, I found it decent enough to watch for 100 minutes.

The film truly is a reboot rather than remake, as it picks up the story of the Griswolds 30 years on from National Lampoon’s Vacation. Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) is now grown up and has a family of his own. They’re a bit stuck in a rut though, with his wife, Debbie (Christina Applegate), feeling the sparkle has gone out of their marriage, and sons James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins) constantly fighting – although it’s the younger child bullying the older. Topher DiMaggio, Cory Zwierzynski and Matt O’Reilly are the boys showing off their assets, and they’re looking very good.

It’s unlikely many of us will have a Christmas quite like the one depicted in the video below, but it’s jolly, sweet and pretty sexy. Click below to take a look. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Fawns – A sensual and bittersweet look at two men’s love

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fawns-slideFor a three-minute short film Fawns certainly packs a lot in, including some absolutely gorgeous photography and more to think about that you’d think 200 seconds could offer. It’s already gotten plenty of love at film festivals, including winning Best Cinematography at the 20th Athens International Film Festival.

The film follows sensual glimpses of the love between men, while the voiceover narration sees one of them relating how they believe their relationship is similar to a fawn in the forest. You’ll have to watch the short below to find out how.

The rather cryptic synopsis merely says, ‘Two young men are alone at a self-service laundry. They are sitting next to each other, waiting in silence. An old framed embroidery of a young deer is hanging against the wall across them.‘

Greek director Thanasis Tsimpinishas said on the movie, that the inspiration for the short came “out of the blue. I was reading about the life of deer and I stumbled upon the very story my film describes. I thought that this story could be relevant to any being that feels love for another being.”

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer – James McAvoy and co. go up against what may be the ultimate mutant

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

x-men-apocalypse-trailer-slideAfter the huge success of X-Men: Days Of Future Past, the mutant are returning with X-Men: Apocalypse, which may not have the actors from the original trilogy, but brings back the likes of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, alongside plenty of newbies, many of them playing younger versions of characters we’ve seen before.

And with Days Of Future Past resetting the timeline, it also allows for reinvented versions of characters.

Here’s the synopsis:’Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.’

Bryan Singer directs once more more, with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Olivia Munn, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Lucas Till, Josh Helman, Lana Condor and Ben Hardy starring.

It’ll be in cinemas next May.

The Legend of Tarzan Trailer – Him Alexander Skarsgard, her Margot Robbie

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tarzan-poster1-slideThe tales of Tarzan certainly looks like it’s gotten dramatic and moody if this first trailer for the big budget live-action take on Edgar Rice Burrough’s character is anything to go by. It also looks like the special effects wizards have got their work cut out for them, as there’s plenty of spectacle to behold (including Alexander Skargard’s abs).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, John Hurt and Djimon Hounsou, and directed by David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 & Part 2), TARZAN will be released in cinemas on 8th July 2016.

‘It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side.  Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz).  But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.’

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Trailer – Turtle power with added Stephen Amell

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-2-trailer-slideThe live-action do-over of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proved much more successful at the box office than most people expected grossing just under $500 million at the worldwide box office. That ensured Paramount would want a sequel, which will will hit cinemas next summer.

This time around the turtles and Megan Fox’s April O’Neil are going to be joined by Arrow’s Stephen Amell as hockey-mask wearing vigilante Casey Jones. He makes his first appearance in the trailer, which you can take a look at below.

The initial trailer for the first movie was widely derided and made many think the entire thing was a bad idea that should never have been attempted, but this time around the first promo is actually quite fun. Dave Green directs, with a June 2016 release date set.

New Grimsby Trailer – Sacha Baron Cohen causes problems for his spy brother

grimsby-slideSynopsis: ‘In the action-comedy Grimsby, when Sebastian Graves (Mark Strong), a deadly MI6 agent, takes on a mission to prevent a massive global terror attack, he must unfortunately reunite with his long-lost brother Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen), a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan… proving that behind every great spy is an embarrassing sibling.

Cate Blanchett In Talks for Thor: Ragnarok

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Cate-BlanchettCate Blanchett has spent plenty of time in Middle Earth and now it looks like she’ll heading for Asgard, as Variety reports that she’s in talks to star in Thor: Ragnarok. It’s not known who she’ll be playing, or if it’s the same part of a female villain that Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain were said to be being considered for.

Suggestions for the character Blanchett will take on include Amora the Enchantress, Hela Goddess of Death, Karnila and the Warrior Queen Knorda, with most plumping for the first of those.

There’s been no official word on the plot either, but many believe it will follow the parts of the comic books where Loki uses the mold of Mjolnir to create new weapons, and with Thor’s hammer broken, war breaks out that threaten both Asgard and Earth. We do know however that the movie will include Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

Taika Waititi will direct, with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander all known to be returning. It’ll be in cinemas July 2017.

Just How Tall Are Some Of Hollywood’s Hottest Movie Hunks?

December 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

height-chart-hollywood-males-slideIt’s actually surprisingly difficult to work out how tall movie stars are, as you often find that when you see them they are far different to what you’d imagine. For example, in The Hunger Games you wouldn’t particularly think that Josh Hutcherson was just 5ft 5in tall, or that little Will Poulter from We’re The Millers and Maze Runner is actually 6ft 2in high (and actually seems taller).

Vulture and Celebheights have decided to help us see exactly how tall some of Hollywood’s hottest hunk are, from Josh Hutcherson at one end to the gangling Angsel Elgort (6ft 4in) at the other. It is oddly interesting, as would you have thought Tom Hiddleston was a fuller eight inches taller than Dave Franco? Or that while Tom Hardy often looks very big on screen, he’s actually a pretty average 5ft 9in?

Movie trickery often works to obscure differences in height, so it’s more difficult to guess an actor’s height than you’d think. And in case you were wondering, while Tom Cruise isn’t on here, the famously short actor is actually a not too tiny 5ft 7in and doesn’t look as minuscule in real life as rumours would have you believe.

Click on the pic below to take a closer look at just how tall some of Hollywood’s best brightest are. Personally I was most surprised about Idris Elba, as I wouldn’t have pegged him at 6ft 2in.
