Three In A Bed (DVD Review)

March 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Brennan Reece, Darren Bransford, Jody Latham
Director: Lloyd Eyre-Morgan
Running Time: 81 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 23rd 2015 (UK)

Nate is a young man whose life has slightly stalled. On her deathbed his mother made him promise to look after his two sisters, something he took to heart so much that he doesn’t have much going on of his own. It doesn’t help that his sisters are loud, gobby and good at getting into trouble.

But then he meets Jonny, who lives downstairs and seems keen to make friends. They certainly share an attraction, but Nate isn’t sure what his sexuality is, and his life suddenly becomes more complicated when his sisters – who are certain he’s straight – announce that because of the various issues in their lives, they’re coming to stay with him. Nate flirts around the idea of starting something up with Jonny, although Jonny isn’t keen on the idea of having to keep the whole thing in the closet. [Read more…]

Paddington (Blu-ray Review)

March 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Bonneville, Ben Whishaw, Sally Hawkins, Nicole Kidman
Director: Paul King
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: March 23rd 2015

Paddington is proof, if it were needed, that in a world where filmmakers constantly seem to think they need to make their family films cool and hip, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel if you’re going to do it right.

I have to admit I was dubious about this take on Michael Bond’s classic children’s character, as after seeing the first image of the bear’s new live-action/CGI incarnation, he just didn’t look quite right to me. However after only a couple of minutes of the movie starting, I have to admit I was rather enchanted. [Read more…]

A Great Short Doc Looks At The How The Ideal Of Male Beauty Varies Around The World

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ideal-of-male-beautyWhen us westerners look at the media, we could be forgiven for thinking the ideas about male beauty are the same in every corner of the world. However just because we don’t see it, doesn’t mean that every culture values and espouses exactly the same things.

Buzzfeed has come up with a great short doc which looks at ideas of male beauty in 12 different countries from South Korea to Nigeria. It uses a variety of facts and figures to find out what those different countries like, from the popularity of tattoos in Britain to a move towards romantic leading men in Turkey.

However despite the differences it has to be said that if the prettiness on display is anything to go by, there are still plenty of similarities in what people think are hot, as these studs would be considered good looking in whatever country they happened to be. In fact I was waiting for the country that liked fat, balding guys who are in their 50s, but strangely enough it never arrived.

You can take a look at the interesting and, err, visually pleasing film below. [Read more…]

Russell Tovey Says He Only Touches Straight Men’s Balls If a Script Tells Him To (Sort Of)

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

russell-toveyGood old Russell Tovey, he’s got a good moral code where he doesn’t believe in touching straight men’s balls unless a script tells him he should. Not really, or at least we presume he had his tongue somewhat in his cheek in a recent chat with Heat magazine.

He says of doing sex scenes with another guy, “It’s easier doing those scenes with another gay man than it is a straight man, the same way I feel fine doing sex scenes with a woman.

“When I’m doing a sex scene with an actor who is straight, I feel a huge sense of responsibility not to feel like I’m taking advantage or anything. Like, I’ll only touch their balls if it says so in the script.”

He’s also well aware that in the modern age, if you’re going to take your shirt off or get nude on screen, there are plenty of people out there who will screenshot it, post it online and analyse every frame, and understandably Russell wants to ensure that he looks as good as he can.

He says of preparing for his sexy scenes in Looking, “I keep the bush low, trim the chest hair and I like to get the nipples more erect, so I’ll tweak them a bit too. Erect nipples add so much to a scene I think.

“I do worry about how I’m going to look in screen-grabs and GIFS. You know it’s going to happen.”

He’s certainly got a decent sense of humour even if he leaves you wondering how serious he might be being.

You can check out a fun vid taken during his Heat photoshoot below. [Read more…]

The Skeleton Twins (DVD Review)

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell, Boyd Holbrook
Director: Craig Johnson
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

With SNL alumni Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader in the lead roles, you could be forgiven for thinking this would be a riotous gross-out laugh-fest, but right from the first few scenes The Skeleton Twins sets itself to be something far more indie dramedy.

Hader and Wiig are twins Milo and Maggie who aren’t completely estranged but have severely drifted apart after he left for LA to become an actor. Things aren’t going to well though, as the movie opens with Maggie narrowly escaping death and Milo attempting suicide. He heads back to their hometown to stay with Maggie and try to start over, but they soon discover that reuniting isn’t easy and that neither of them is in a place in their lives where they feel they should be. Joseph Gordon-Levitt Takes On A Live-Action Fraggle Rock Movie

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joseph-gordon-levittFor over a decade now there’s been talk of a live-action Fraggle Rock movie, but despite a lot of talk it’s never actually seemed close to happening. However sometimes it needs the clout of a big name to get things happening, and hopefully that’ll happen now as Variety reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed up to produce and star.

Gordon-Levitt says, “The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock. Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”

There’s not too much info other than that, such as who might direct and whether they’re bringing on new writers, or indeed when we might get to see the movie. There’s also no info about who Joseph might play, or indeed whether he’ll voice a Fraggle or be a live-action character.

Hopefully though the addition of Gordon-Levitt means the film will actually go somewhere this time.

Horns (DVD Review)

March 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Max Minghella, Joe Anderson
Director: Alexandre Aja
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

Horns is a certainly a bit of an odd film, not least because it can’t quite decide what it is – comedy, horror, fable, fantasy, thriller, murder mystery, drama – flitting between them all with little sense of consistency. It’s probably this difficulty in pigeonholing the movie that has limited its audience so far, but in many ways that’s a shame, as while very uneven it is oddly entertaining and just a little beguiling.

Daniel Radcliffe is Ig Perrish, whose girlfriend (Juno Temple) has been murdered and everyone in his small town has decided he’s the killer, despite there not being enough evidence to charge him with anything. Things get a little bizarre when he wakes up one morning to discover he’s grown horns out of his forehead, and that he now has the power to get people to admit to all the things they’d normally keep hidden away (he discovers a lot of these things involve what they’d really like to do to him, as they believe he’s gotten away with murder). Win Silicon Valley – Season 1 On DVD!

March 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

silicon-valley-s1-dvd-coverThe socially challenged underdogs of the lucrative world of tech start-ups are finally uncovered in the painfully funny SILICON VALLEY: THE COMPLETE FIRST SERIES released on Blu-ray and DVD from the 23rd March 2015, courtesy of HBO. And we’ve got three DVD copies to give away in this competition.

From the offbeat mind of Mike Judge (Office Space, Idiocracy), this critically-acclaimed HBO comedy takes viewers inside the high-tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley. Inspired by Judge’s own experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer in the 80’s, the show follows the trials and tribulations of awkward computer programmer Richard (Thomas Middleditch – The Wolf of Wall Street), who lives in a “Hacker Hostel” along with his friends Big Head (Josh Brener – The Big Bang Theory), Gilfoyle (Martin Starr – This Is The End), and Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani – Sex Tape).

Under the watchful eye of Erlich (T.J. Miller), a dotcom millionaire who lets them stay in his house for free (as long as he gets a 10% stake in their projects), the friends struggle to break into the elusive and lucrative market. Richard is stuck in a part-time job at tech company Hooli, and his obscure website, Pied Piper, is going nowhere fast. But when a colleague realises just how valuable the site’s compression algorithm is, Richard finds himself caught in the middle of an extreme bidding war between Hooli founder Gavin Belson (Matt Ross – American Horror Story) and independent billionaire venture capitalist Peter Gregory (Christopher Evan Welch – The Master).

To be in with a chance of winning one of the three copies of SILICON VALLEY: THE COMPLETE FIRST SERIES on DVD that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on April 1st, 2015, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

First Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Poster & Teaser Revealed

March 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hunger-Games-Mockingjay-Part-2-poster1The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 may have only just arrived on DVD, but Lionsgate is already thinking to the future and the release of the final film in the series later this year.

They’ve now released the first poster and teaser/logo for the film (via EW), and it probably won’t be a shock to find that it’s reminiscent of a lot of the earlier films, with an image of a Mockingjay, but taken from a slightly different angle.

It’s a good reminder though – as if we needed it – that later this year we’ll be able to see what happens to Katniss and her allies as they go up against the evil Capitol in a final showdown.

Mockingjay Part 2 will be in cinema November 20th. [Read more…]
