30 Rock – Season 6 (DVD)

April 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Jack McBrayer, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski
Director: Various
Running Time: 692 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 15th 2013

I’ve never quite worked out why Comedy Central shows 30 Rock in the way they do in the UK, where we tend to get it in half season chunks (sometimes with the second half of one season and the beginning of another shoved together). It means that while 30 Rock – Season 6 ended in May 2012 in the US, it’s only just come to a conclusion on British TV, and so now we can get the 22 episodes on DVD. [Read more…]

CSI: Miami – Season 10 (DVD)

April 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Caruso, Emily Procter, Adam Rodriguez, Jonathan Togo, Eva La Rue
Director: Various
Running Time: 800 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 1st 2013

It’s not too long ago that CSI: Miami was the most watched programme in the world. However, while its sister shows CSI: New York and CSI: Vegas continue, the Florida-set series comes to an end with the 19 episodes of Season 10.

It’s pretty much business as usual, with Lt. Horatio Cane (David Caruso) once more investigating Miami murder, as well as being very indecisive over whether he needs to wear sunglasses or not. Crimes range from the murder of a male escort found in a hotel cabana to the Twilight inspired killing of the housemaid of a young adult novelist. As the makers of CSI: Miami knew the show was going to end, there’s also time to wrap up a few on-going threads, such as the return of Horatio’s nemeses, the Mala Noche gang, as well as ensuring a serial killer who gets away early in the season can come under the CSI’s lens again before the season ends. Body Of Proof – Season 2 (DVD)

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dana Delany, Nicholas Bishop, Jeri Ryan, Geoffrey Arend, Windell Middlebrooks
Director: Various
Running Time: 670 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 4th 2013

When Body Of Proof started it had a bit of a problem. It wanted to be a little edgy, with a no-nonsense lead character who had the innate ability to annoy just about everyone she met, but her aggravating personality meant she got results. When the series was being developed it probably sounded interesting and a way to make it stand out, but the result was a character who often came across as pretty unlikeable and whiny. [Read more…]

A Liar’s Autobiography – The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman in 3D (Cinema)

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam
Director: Various
Running Time: 85 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 8th 2013

This film has been released 23 years after the untimely death (or not, if you look at his lifestyle) of Graham Chapman. The Film is not calling itself A Monty Python film, but a Graham Chapman film, and after watching it you might understand why.

The synopsis: in 1989 Chapman – ‘a freeloading bastard’ (according to John Cleese at his funeral) sadly ceased to be! ‘E’s expired and gone to meet ‘is maker! ‘E’s kicked the bucket, ‘E’s shuffled off ‘is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisible!! – OK enough Parrot Sketch quotes already!! (which he co-wrote with John Cleese) [Read more…]

Enlightened – Season 1 (DVD)

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Laura Dern, Mike White, Diane Ladd, Bayne Gibby
Director: Various
Running Time: 270 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 14th 2012

The rule in the US seems to be that shows made for the main networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) are about people you generally like, while if they’re on cable, they’re about assholes. It’s not quite as clear-cut as that, but it sometimes seems like it. Enlightened is another part of the move towards shows about characters where you’re never 100% sure if they’re endearing or insufferable.

Amy (Laura Dern) works for a large conglomerate but when we first see her she’s not having a good day. She’s mid-breakdown, swearing at her co-workers and blaming all her woes on the man she’s been sleeping with (but who has a wife and kid). We next cut to her six months later, after Amy’s spent time in Hawaii dealing with her issues. She’s arrives back with a bit of a hippy spirit, determined to make herself a better person and improve the world around her. [Read more…]

Anger Management – Season 1 (DVD)

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Charlie Sheen, Selma Blair, Shawnee Smith, Daniela Bobadilla
Director: Various
Running Time: 205 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 14th 2012

Was it just me, or wasn’t Charlie Sheen sacked from Two And A Half Men? I only ask because while it said Anger Management on the disc I reviewed from, Sheen essentially seems to be playing the same character in this show – with just a couple of tweaks. Anger Management has the same tone and most of the jokes could have gone into either series and nobody would have noticed. Although you could say that’s natural as it’s a sitcom, there seems a concerted effort here to make something that feels like Two And A Half Men’s first cousin. [Read more…]

Wizards Vs. Aliens – Series 1 (DVD)

December 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Scott Haran, Percelle Ascott, Annette Badland, Jefferson Hall, Brian Blessed
Director: Various
Running Time: 340 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: December 31st 2012

When Russell T. Davies left Doctor Who in 2009 it seemed the world was his oyster. However following the middling reception of Torchwood: Miracle Day, we haven’t seen much from him, largely due to the fact his partner was diagnosed with a brain tumour and so he moved back to the UK from California to look after him. The return to Britain also gave him time to team up with The Sarah Jane Adventures writer Phil Ford to create the CBBC show, Wizards Vs. Aliens. Now the 12-part first series has reached DVD and Blu-ray. [Read more…]

Chicago Hope – Season 3 (DVD)

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Adam Arkin, Hector Elizondo, Christine Lahti, Mark Harmon, Thomas Gibson
Director: Various
Running Time: 1179 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: November 5th 2012

While Chicago Hope is an entertaining show, it was probably just as important as a training ground for those who’ve gone on to big things in the world of TV. It’s famed as the first show David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, Boston Legal) created and ran, but it was also the first producing gig for Tim Kring (Heroes), Ian Bieberman (Cold Case, Crossing Jordan), Rob Corn (The District, Grey’s Anatomy) and various others, many who’ve continued to work with Kelley over the years. Nor is it a coincidence that both Mandy Patinkin and Thomas Gibson ended up in Criminal Minds, and Mark Harmon and Rocky Carroll went on to NCIS. [Read more…]

Grimm – Season 1 (DVD)

October 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Sasha Roiz, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell
Director: Various
Running Time: 635 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 22nd 2012

Grimm – Season 2 is just starting on UK TV, so if you need to catch up, you’ll have to get hold of this box set quickly. And it probably will help to catch up, if only because Grimm’s world of beasts and police procedural fantasy can sometimes get a little bit complicated.

Det. Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) is a Portland, Oregon cop, who’s good at his job, but rarely experiences anything out of the ordinary. However then his Aunt Marie (Kate Burton) turns up and he starts seeing very strange things – certain people’s faces begin morphing into that of strange creatures, revealing the beasts within. Nick discovers that he is a Grimm, which isn’t just the surname of some fairy tale writing brothers, but essentially a job, handed down in his family. He has the ability to see the beasts, known as ‘Wesin’, who live around us and to most people just look like ordinary humans. Each race is different, from those who are like bears to those who are like beavers, and some are far more dangerous than others. [Read more…]

House – Season 8 (DVD)

October 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hugh Laurie, Omar Epps, Jesse Spencer, Robert Sean Leonard, Peter Jacobson
Director: Various
Running Time: 945 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 22nd 2012

I’m still not sure how I’m going to cope – no more House! After eight years the show came to an end on television earlier this year, completing the remarkable run of one of the best TV shows of the last decade. I’ll have to console myself with the DVD box sets, the final one of which has now arrived.

The six disc set features the sardonic Dr. House’s last 22 episodes, and if you watched Season 7, you’ll know he starts the run in a bit of bother. Having taken not getting over a break-up to the extreme and crashing a car into his ex’s house, the doc begins Season 8 locked up in prison. Even there he can’t stop himself from playing mind games or trying to get to the bottom of a medical mystery that presents itself. Soon former employee and now head of Princeton Plainsboro hospital, Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), helps House get out of the clink and return to work, even if House does have to wear an ankle monitor.
