Uncle David 2 (BFI Flare Review) – David Hoyle’s back on the Isle Of Sheppey with a new ‘nephew’

April 1, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Hoyle, Archie Redmond, Matthew Daniels, Lucy McCormick
Director: Gary Reich
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 24th 2018 (UK)

Back in 2010 we got the movie Uncle David, about a middle-aged man – the David (David Hoyle) of the title – going to the Isle Of Sheppey with his younger lover/protégé. Now we have the sequel, which has a similar set-up with David back in his Sheppey caravan with a different young person – the genderqueer Michelle. Again David is pontificating about what he sees as the social ills of the world, although as those who’ve seen the first film will know, he’s got his own secrets and may be more dangerous than he first appears.

Into the mix come the almost feral Max and his sister, who are struggling for survival. The sister takes an interest in David and Michelle, but Max is wary of them. That doesn’t stop him taking an interest in Michelle though. [Read more…]

Elvis & Nixon (DVD Review)

October 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey, Alex Pettyfer, Evan Peters, Colin Hanks
Director: Liza Johnson
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 31st 2016 (UK)

Elvis & Nixon is a movie spun out from a single moment – a meeting between Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon in December 1970, which resulted in a picture of the two of them, which is apparently the most requested image from the US National Archive. Here we get Michael Shannon as a surprisingly good Elvis, and Kevin Spacey as a slightly more human Nixon that we might be used to.

The movie picks up a while before the meeting, with Elvis fed up with the direction the country is heading – he doesn’t like hippies, the anti-Vietnam protests or The Beatles – so he decides he wants to become a Federal Agent and go undercover to help sort things out. While Elvis is used to having people around who organise his life for him, he decides he’s got to sort this out himself, reaching out to his long-time friend, Jerry (Alex Pettyfer), to help him. March 13, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Various
Director: Julian Hernandez, Roberto Fiesco
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: March 14th 2016 (UK)

I’ve written on more than one occasion that some of the most interesting queer cinema around is coming out of Central and South America. This new release focuses on the work of Julián Hernández (Broken Sky, Raging Sun Raging Sky) and Roberto Fiesco, who have often collaborated together (such as Fiesco producing Hernández’s film). Mexican Men brings together five gay-themed short films, the first directed by Fiesco, with the others helmed by Hernández.

So are they any good? Take a look below. [Read more…]

Director: Maximilian Moll
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15

Middle-aged writer Edu has been seeing much younger hustler Fabio but is getting concerned due to the fact that while it’s fun, they’re having unprotected sex and he’s worried about STDs. However, soon it’s not just the possibility of HIV that he’s thinking about, as he starts to fall for the young man, something Fabio initially appears to reciprocate.

Inevitably though, the age difference, concerns about Fabio’s profession and the very different lives that they lead, begins to cause tension and ensures this will not be a simple love. And anyway, is Fabio just playing a role to get more money and gifts? [Read more…]

Pasolini (Blu-ray Review)

October 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Willem Dafoe, Riccardo Scamarcio, Ninetto Davoli
Director: Abel Ferrara
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: October 26th 2015 (UK)

Abel Ferrara’s movie about director Pier Paolo Pasolini’s final day in 1975 has been described as ‘non-linear’, ‘cubist’ and ‘kaleidoscopic’, which should be a good hint that this is not a straightforward, simple movie. This is a movie for those who enjoy their films on the artier side and don’t mind something that asks them to piece things together to create a moment in someone’s life. It also helps if you know a little bit about Pasolini before you watch it.

Pasolini was a true artistic polymath, distinguishing himself as a poet, writer, film director, political figure and cultural philosopher. His leftist politics made him a controversial figure to some, although many couldn’t see past the ‘shocking’ elements of his work – but as Pasolini puts it, “To scandalise is a right, to be scandalised is a pleasure”. Starring: Ian Hecox, Anthony Padilla, Michael Ian Black, Brittany Ross, Jillian Nelson
Director: Alex Winter
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 27th 2015 (UK)

The world of Internet fame is a strange thing. The bigger names of Youtube have millions of fans, people throng to their videos, books and other paraphernalia and some of them make millions of dollars from it – however outside a very specific demographic, names like Tyler Oakley and Joey Graceffa mean absolutely nothing. It’s almost like there’s a parallel world which most older people aren’t even aware exists.

Comedy duo Smosh (aka Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla) were one of the first, having the most viewed video on Youtube and the most followed channel back in the days when the video sharing site was still growing into the behemoth that it is today. And now they’ve got their own movie. [Read more…]

Evil Dead II – Special Edition (Blu-ray)

April 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks, Ted Raimi
Director: Sam Raimi
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 15th 2013

With a remake of Evil Dead in cinemas, Studiocanal has dusted off Sami Raimi’s 1987 movie Evil Dead II for a spruced up Blu-ray re-release, with some new extras added in. There’s no doubt the film is a horror classic. While less grossly gory than the original Evil Dead (although no slouch on the gore front), it’s much funnier and yet still manages to be original, strange and scary. [Read more…]

The Men Next Door (DVD)

January 14, 2013 By Lewis Shepherd Leave a Comment

Starring: Benjamin Lutz, Eric Dean, Michael Nicklin
Director: Rob Williams
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 14th 2012

Luring you in with a concept that has only really been seen in soaps and mainly carried out as heterosexual storylines, The Men Next Door makes you feel as though you’re about to see something a little different in terms of gay cinema. However once the film begins it’s rather disappointing to find that it’s just another mound of clichés, stereotypes and unfunny comedy. [Read more…]

The Men Next Door (DVD) (US Release)

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Eric Dean, Michael Nicklin, Benjamin Lutz, Michael Cirillo, Heidi Rhodes
Director: Rob Williams
Running Time: 84 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: December 11th 2012

It’s interesting that in the last few years a real gay movie ‘industry’ has sprung up, with its own actors and stars. Writer/director Rob Williams has previously made the gay-themed likes of 3-Day Weekend, Make The Yuletide Gay and Role/Play, and now he’s back with The Men Next Door. To help him he’s pulled together a cast who’ve been seen in various other gay movies, such as Benjamin Lutz (The Love Patient, Bite Marks), Mark Cirillo (The Seminarian), Christopher Schram (Requited) and Ronnie Kroell (Eating Out: Drama Camp, Into The Lion’s Den), along with some others who are newer to the LGBT flick game.
