Starring: Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Thomas Brodie-Sangster
Director: Wes Ball
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: October 10th 2014 (UK)

With any teen action/fantasy film, there are always going to be comparisons to the very obvious Twilight, Divergent and the box office Phenomenon that is The Hunger Games – all film franchises adapted from highly acclaimed books aimed initially at the teen market.

Like many of these successful franchises, The Maze Runner is a trilogy also with prequel to follow, this one written by James Dashner.

The plot? Well to no real surprise, again we have a lead character thrown into a situation out of their control, where they have to battle against all odds for survival using sheer willpower and strength of character – also seen in past classics Lord Of the Flies and Battle Royale. [Read more…]

The latest instalment in the X-Men franchise; Days of Future Past does not disappointment. Of course there’s also the ultimate X-Men veteran who has appeared in ALL of the X-men films, Hugh Jackman.

Godzilla (Cinema)

May 13, 2014 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe
Director: Gareth Edwards
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: May 15th 2014

16 years after the dodgy Roland Emmerich version of the 1954 Japanese cult classic comes a welcome Hollywood reboot of the mother (or father) of all monster movies – Godzilla.

Gareth Edwards, who shot to fame as the director of the hugely successful Monsters, is behind the camera this time and has managed to breath fire into this dormant franchise. [Read more…]

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Cinema)

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson
Director: Joe Russo, Anthony Russo
Running Time: 136 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: March 26th 2014 (UK)

It’s a sign of the times that our superheroes these days are not quite all macho and invincibility, rather plagued with doubts and worries – Batman as Hamlet for example. Captain America seems to be no exception – this actioner has as many scenes with him frowning and worrying over America’s place in the world as zooming around fighting baddies. It’s still not exactly complex – at one point his pal asks, “Which ones are the bad guys” – and he answers, “If they’re shooting at you they’re the bad guys.” [Read more…]

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug (Cinema)

December 11, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch
Director: Peter Jackson
Running Time: 161
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: December 13th 2013

After the massive success of Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey wasn’t as well received by fans and critics. This was due to running time, the lengthy introduction to all the new characters, as well as Peter Jackson’s controversial decision to film and project it at 48fps (which many complained gave it a video feel).

So has Jackson redeemed himself with the diehard fans of Middle Earth with part two of the Hobbit trilogy? Yes, Smaug is The Two Towers compared to the slower Fellowship of the Ring. [Read more…]

Gravity (Cinema)

November 5, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris
Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: November 7th 2013

Gravity comes to the UK having taken an impressive $200+M dollars at the US box office on a budget estimated at only $100M. So why has this movie been such a huge success, rocketing its way to the the big box office earners of 2013?

Gravity has great pedigree of talent, namely Oscar winners Sandra Bullock (Ryan Stone), George Clooney (Matt Kowalski) and Ed Harris (the voice of Mission control) as well as its Oscar nominated director, Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Children Of Men). [Read more…]

Philomena (Cinema)

November 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steve Coogan, Judi Dench, Anna Maxwell Martin, Mare Winningham
Director: Stephen Frears
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: November 1st 2013

Peter Mullan’s 2002 film The Magdalene Sisters was a howl of outrage at the Catholic Church in Ireland; a coruscating, raw drama about the abuse of young girls basically held prisoner by sadistic nuns after falling pregnant.

Stephen Freers’ Philomena has basically the same theme but is, by comparison, a gentle, warm story, which seems too timid to unveil the same power as Mullan’s film. Dench and Coogan have rightly garnered strong reviews for their performances, but the film’s script seems too scared of going for the emotional knockout punch, despite the real power of the story. Thor: The Dark World (Cinema)

October 29, 2013 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins
Director: Alan Taylor
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: October 30th 2013

Thor – The Dark World is the 8th installment set in the Marvel’s Interconnected Universe, and this time the franchise has a new director, Alan Taylor, taking over from Kenneth Branagh, who did such a great job introducing Thor to the cinematic world.

So what do we need to know about Thor: The Dark World? Well, it delivers much the same as the original Thor – there are intergalactic baddies (Elves lead by Malekith – played by Christopher Ecclestone) trying to kill the residents of Asgard as well as the other nine realms. There are amazing backdrops to set the battles in, there are ridiculously over the top costumes, and massive body counts, rippling muscle and a good thread of humour running through the film. Kuma (Cinema)

Starring: Nihal G. Koldas, Begüm Akkaya, Vedat Erincin, Murathan Muslu
Director: Umat Dag
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: August 16th 2013

Ayse is young woman living in a small village in Turkey whose family has decided to marry her off to the handsome Hasan. However the arrangement is actually a way to get around polygamy laws, as Ayse is really going to move to Austria and become the second wife of Hasan’s father. Ayse is welcomed into the family by first wife Fatma, who has cancer and sees this new woman as the way her family will continue if the worst happens. Perhaps unsurprisingly some of the children, who’ve all grown up in the west, are unimpressed by this ‘bumpkin’ interloper. [Read more…]
