Hopeful Romantic Trailer – Telling a gay-themed story of love and heartbreak through music

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hopeful-romantic-pic1Over the weekend the short film Hopeful Romantic made its debut in LA with the cast and crew – including George Takei – heading along to take a look at this unusual fusion of music and the movies.

Writer, star and creator of the short’s music, Matt Zarley, writes, ‘When I first started writing the music for this, I was deeply in love. The original plan was to write a simple little EP of love songs. I was so happy and I wanted everyone to know it. A few weeks into the process, my relationship ended abruptly without warning. I was devastated. It was hard for me to access a lot of positive loving feelings at the time. Out of that temporary writer’s block, I wrote “Constantly”. As I was finishing that song, I began to rethink my project. What was originally gonna be a 5 song EP of love songs suddenly took a turn. I had decided to construct a narrative…a journey with music being the guide.

‘Having had an extensive background in Broadway and musical theatre, it seemed natural to finally merge my two worlds together. Much of what I was writing about was also what I was experiencing in real life. Thru this creative journey, I began to heal myself. In the end, my faith and belief that there’s someone out there for all of us was restored. Holding onto the eternal cliche that “everything happens for a reason” couldn’t hold more truth for me now. I’m convinced that had I not loved as deeply as I did and had I not been so devastated, this project surely wouldn’t have happened. For that, I’m thankful for my once broken heart.’

Take a look at the trailer below. The film is currently being submitted to film festival, so maybe it’ll come to one near you soon. You can find out more on the short’s website. [Read more…]

Matt Damon Confirms He’ll Be Back As Jason Bourne

November 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bourne-ultimatum-matt-damonIn September is was reported that director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon were in talks to make another Bourne movie. While the sources seemed pretty solid, Damon himself wasn’t saying anything about it, and with talks for a fourth Jason Bourne movie having fallen through before, it wasn’t completely certain.

However now Matt himself has confirmed it, telling E! News, telling them, “Yes, next year [we’ll shoot it]. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

Damon is just about to shoot The Martian for Ridley Scott and he’s also recently signed up for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, so presumably the new Bourne movie will come after those films.

Previously 2016 was set to get a sequel to The Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner, but when Damon and Greengrass came on board, that film took a backseat. It’s not clear yet whether they’ll bring in Renner to star alongside Damon, or whether we’ll have to wait longer for his return to the franchise.

Will Jared Leto Be The Joker In Suicide Squad?

November 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jared-LetoBefore Dallas Buyers Club, there was a four-year gap between movies for Jared Leto while he concentrated on fronting his band. However after he won an Oscar, many expected him to return to the world of movies with a vengeance.

Despite a few possibilities he’s yet to pick his next role, but that may change soon if Warner and DC get their way, as TheWrap reports that they want him to play The Joker in Suicide Squad. Ryan Gosling was previously circling the role, but he apparently didn’t want to to sign a deal that would cover multiple movies (which could also be an issue with Leto).

You’ve also got to imagine any actor would also have qualms about taking the role, as they’re bound to be compared to Heath Ledger’s iconic performance in The Dark Knight.

As previously reported, Will Smith, Cara Delevigne, Tom Hardy, and Margot Robbie are all said to be in various stages of discussions to star Suicide Squad, with Jesse Eisenberg expected to reprise his Batman v Superman role as Lex Luthor. However as yet no casting has been confirmed.

It’s said Suicide Squad will focus on seven DC Comics villains, who have been captured but are offered the chance for redemption with a mission none of them are expected to survive.

David Ayer will direct with an August 2016 release planned.

warcraft-character-pic1Warcraft finished shooting a while ago, but with so many special effects to finish off, it won’t be in cinemas for nearly a year and a half. Selma Trailer – David Oyelowo takes on a key moment in MLK’s civil rights struggle

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

selma-pic2You wouldn’t think making a movie about one of the most important moments in the Civil Rights struggle in the US would be that difficult to get off the ground, but Selma faced a massive struggle. Even with Lee Daniels directing and a high profile cast attached (including Hugh Jackman and others), it couldn’t get funding).

However now it’s finally happened, with Ava DuVernay directing and David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi Common, Carmen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint, Tim Roth, and Oprah Winfrey starring.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.’

Selma opens in a few US cinemas on December 25th, 2014, and will go wide in early January. A February 6th UK release is planned. [Read more…]

Mark Wahlberg Will Be The Six Billion Dollar Man With Peter Berg Directing

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-wahlbergA few months ago rumours emerged that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg were thinking about making a movie version of The Six Million Dollar Man. It turns out that was correct, but six million doesn’t buy you what it did in the 1970s, so Deadline reports that it will now become The Six Billion Dollar Man. That’s inflation for you.

The movie is about Steve Austin (Wahlberg), a former astronaut who nearly dies after crashing an experimental plane. He is saved when scientists give him bionic replacements for both legs, his right arm and left eye. He becomes a powerful weapon for the government as a secret agent for the Office of Scientific Intelligence.

The TV series, which starred Lee Majors and ran for five seasons between 1974 and 1978, was based on the 1972 novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin.

It appears getting the movie off the ground hasn’t been plain sailing though. While Universal own the rights to The Six Million Dollar Man TV series and were said to be backing the film when it was first rumoured, in order to move things forwards The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films label has now stepped in to back the movie, although Universal may still part-finance.

Peter Berg, who previously worked with Wahlberg on Lone Survivor, will direct. They hope to shoot the film sometime next year for a 2016 release.

Toy Story 4 Is Officially Coming With John Lasseter Directing

November 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-lasseter-pixarRemember when Pixar was the company that hated sequels? That’s changed massively over the years, not least with the gargantuan success of the Toy Story series. While it appeared Toy Story 3 would be the end of the line – it certainly felt like a perfect conclusion – Disney & Pixar have now announced a fourth instalment.

John Lasseter, director of the first two Toy Story movies will helms the film, which promises to ‘open a new chapter in the lives of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the Toy Story’ gang. The story was dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three Toy Story films. That will now be turned into a script by the writing team of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever).

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

The film already has a US release date of June 16th, 2017, and it should be out in the UK around the same time.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Trailer – Can’t Middle Earth people just learn to get along?

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-battle-of-five-armies-poster1-slideIn just over a month we’ll be going back into Middle Earth for the last time (probably) with the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. To give us a taste of what we can expect, the full trailer has now arrived, which you can watch below.

As you would expect, the trailer is big on battle (which presumably involves five armies) and suggests this instalment certainly won’t be lacking in action. Indeed rumours already suggest the final battle itself will last for more than 45 minutes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

‘“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the Company of Dwarves. The Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon, Smaug, upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

‘As he succumbs to dragon-sickness, the King Under the Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield, sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the legendary Arkenstone. Unable to help Thorin see reason, Bilbo is driven to make a desperate and dangerous choice, not knowing that even greater perils lie ahead. An ancient enemy has returned to Middle-earth. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide—unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends as five great armies go to war.’

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is released in UK cinemas 12 December 2014. [Read more…]

Star Wars Episode VII’s Title Is Announced, So What Is It?

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-episode-vii-title-cardEven before the notoriously secretive JJ Abrams came onboard, Disney was keeping the possible full titles of Star Wars Episode VII close to its chest. However, with the House Of Mouse announcing that principal photography has officially come to an end, they’ve also decided to let us know what the movie will actually be called.

And here it is: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Undoubtedly this will start a lot of chatter, not least that it appears Disney has dropped Episode VII from the title , which could just be a refocusing in light of Lucasfilm’s attempts to extend the universe with multiple films (not all of which will be direct sequels to this film). It could also be an attempt to sell this as being something new, rather than just a continuation of George Lucas’ opus.

There’s also the title itself, which is bound to be loved by some and loathed by others. To my mind, it sounds like a computer game, but at least it isn’t as bad as The Phantom Menace. It also makes you wonder how the Force will be awakening, as it wasn’t exactly silent in the earlier movies. The new title suggests perhaps we’ll see an evolution from what’s gone before.

The main immediate speculation is that while Lucas’s vision said their could only be two Sith who were at one with the Dark Side of the Force, here there could be many more. After all, everything had to start over after Return Of The Jedi, with only Luke Skywalker left who had any Jedi skills, so it may be that the rules aren’t the same with a proper Jedi Order presiding over things.

And just so you know we’re not making it up, here’s Disney’s official Twitter announcement: [Read more…]

The Gambler Trailer – Mark Wahlberg makes some dangerous bets

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gambler-poster1After a teaser a few weeks ago, the full trailer for Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming movie The Gambler has now arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Synopsis: Jim Bennett (Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award®-winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…’

The movie will be in UK cinemas on December 19th.
