Win The Hardy Bucks Movie On Blu-ray!

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hardy-Bucks-Movie-bd-coverThe Irish comedy The Hardy Bucks Movie is out not to buy on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK courtesy of Universal, and we’ve teamed up with them to give away two copies on Blu-ray!

‘The Hardy Bucks’ are a group of bored slackers from the sleepy Irish hamlet of Castletown with not much going on and dreams of making it big. To fill their time, for ‘a bit of craic’, they created a mockumentary about their lives which they broadcast on YouTube. It was subsequently entered into and won first prize in Irish broadcaster RTÉ’s ‘Storyland’ competition and was followed-up with two critically acclaimed television series and a Christmas Special. Now ‘The Hardy Bucks Movie’, which sees the lads finally leave Castletown and head out on a wild road trip across Europe, gets its full UK home entertainment release through Universal Pictures, on DVD and Blu-ray from 18 November 2013.

Eddie Durkan, the self-proclaimed leader of the ‘Bucks’ is dreading spending another summer bored out of his skull. Ireland has qualified for the Euros in Poland, but with no money and apathetic mates, the task falls to Eddie to get them out of Castletown and onto the road in search of football and the craic. A small inheritance and an old van provide an escape plan, but the trip takes a turn for the worse after an unscheduled stop-off in Amsterdam. To pay off a huge strip club bar bill, two of the boys are forced into becoming drug mules. Suddenly it’s not just about getting to Poland to watch football; they need to get there alive, with the ‘package’, without getting arrested and without being molested by baboons. With mounting pressure from Dutch and Polish gangsters, the last thing Eddie needs is to bump into his arch nemesis ‘The Viper’ along the way…

If you’d like to try and win one of the two copies of The Hardy Bucks Movie on Blu-ray that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on December 15th 2013, so get answering and good luck!

The Lone Ranger (DVD)

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter
Director: Gore Verbinski
Running Time: 149 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 2nd 2013

Shortly after the release of The Lone Ranger, there was much talk about what a gargantuan flop it was, with the potential of losing $200 million for Disney. However while its $89 million US gross was rubbish compared to the $215 million it cost to make, it actually grossed $260 million worldwide, which isn’t as bad, but once all costs are taken into account, it’s still in the red. Planes (Blu-ray)

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Julia-Louis Dreyfuss
Director: Kyle Hall
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: December 2nd 2013

Planes is an entertaining movie almost in spite of itself. A spin-off from Cars made by Disneytoon Studios (and originally planned to go straight to DVD), you can feel the competing desires behind the movie coming off the screen, not all of which are about telling an entertaining story. The wish to keep the feel of Cars results in a plot that’s a mash-up between the two Pixar movies, complete with major characters that are almost carbon copies of Doc Hudson and Mater, as well as a protagonist who may not have Lightning McQueen’s initial arrogance but still has more than a dash of his attitude. Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds – The New Generation: Alive On Stage (DVD)

Starring: Liam Neeson, Jason Donovan, Ricky Wilson, Marti Pellow
Director: Nick Morris
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: November 25th 2013

In the 1970s unusual albums were the flavour of the times, from The Who’s Tommy to the surprise success of Tubular Bells. However when Jeff Wayne released his musical version of HG Wells’ War Of The Worlds in 1978, I’d be surprised if he thought that 36 years later it would still be going strong re-envisioned as an arena spectacular. Many people mistakenly think it started out as a stage musical, but it wasn’t it was a concept album, with the voice of Richard Burton and various people singing the songs. [Read more…]

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago we had the first trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, now a new international one has arrived, showing off some fresh footage from the big biblical, and rather unusual looking movie.

Here’s the brief official synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe stars as Noah, a man chosen by God for a great task before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world.’

Emma Watson, Jennifer Connolly, Ray Winstone and Anthony Hopkins co-star. And who knew Noah had such hot sons, with Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth as Shem and Ham. Darren Aronofsky’s film is due out March 28th 2014. [Read more…]

Is Christoph Waltz Eyed Being For Pirates of the Caribbean 5?

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

christoph-waltzPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has taken far longer to put together than originally planned, but it seems it’s now moving forward once more, and if the Daily Mail is to be believed, they’re starting to pull together the cast who’ll join Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.

Keith Richards will apparently return as the Jack’s father, the pirate Captain Teague. He seems to be getting an expanded role, teaming up with Jack to battle Captain Brand in a search for a mythical trident. Django Unchained’s Christoph Waltz is reportedly being eyed to take on the villainous Brand.

Teague is said to hold valuable information about the trident, while the ghost of Captain Brand wants to use the weapon on Jack to exact revenge, believing that Sparrow is responsible for turning his brother Eric to a life of piracy, which ultimately ended in his death.

Jack will apparently get a love interest in the form of Barbosa’s daughter Carina Smyth, who is believed to be a witch but is actually just am accomplished astronomer. Geoffrey Rush will also be back as Barbossa.

None of this has been confirmed by Disney at this stage.

Catching Fire Tops The US Box Office Again, With Frozen Also Doing Well

December 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hunger-games-catching-fire-poster2It was always going to be a race between Catching Fire and Frozen for the Thanksgiving US box office top spot. In the end it was The Hunger Games sequel that pulled ahead with $74 million over the actual weekend and $110 million over the five day weekend. It means that in less than two weeks it’s already grazing nearly $300 million.

Frozen still did good business though, taken $93 million since it expanded its screen count from a single screen to 3,700 last Monday. That’s a Thanksgiving holiday record for an animated movie, ahead of Toy Story 2’s $80 million opening. With its wintry theme and good word of mouth, it should continue to do well in the run up to Christmas.

Much of the rest of the top 10 was made up of either new films of those making their first appearance in the top 10 after expanding their screen count. The Jason Statham flick Homefront took fifth spot $6.9 million of its opening, while The Book Thief jumped from 16th to 7th spot with $4.8 million. Black Nativity opened at eight $3.8 million, which is likely to be seen as a disappointment compared to many other recent films with a primarily African American cast. Finally the Judi Dench/Steve Coogan movie Philomena jumped from 27th to 9th spot with $3.7 million.

Take a look below for the US box office top to for the weekend of November 29th-December 1st 2013.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire $74.5 $296.5
2 Frozen $66.7 $93.3
3 Thor: The Dark World $11.1 $186.7
4 The Best Man Holiday $8.4 $63.4
5 Homefront $6.9 $9.7
6 Delivery Man $6.9 $19.4
7 The Book Thief $4.8 $7.8
8 Black Nativity $3.8 $5.0
9 Philomena $3.7 $4.7
10 Last Vegas $2.7 $58.7

December 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul-WalkerHollywood has been left in shock with the news that Fast & Furious star Paul Walker has died, aged 40, in a car crash in Southern California. Walker was the passenger in a car which apparently hit a pole and then burst into flames. The driver was also killed.

Born in Southern California, Walker was been on screen since he was a toddler (first appearing in a Pampers commercial) and started finding adult fame in the likes Pleasantville and Varsity Blues, but it was with The Fast & The Furious franchise that he found true stardom. He appeared in all the movies barring the third one.

Walker was shooting the seventh in the Fast & Furious series at the time of his death. He was on a Thanksgiving break but was due to return to the shoot soon.

An official statement of Walker’s Facebook page reads, ‘It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out WorldWide. He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. – #TeamPW’

His Fast & Furious co-stars took to Twitter to express their grief, with Vin Diesel saying, ‘Brother I will miss you very much. I am absolutely speechless. Heaven has gained a new Angel. Rest in Peace.’ Dwayne Johnson added, All my strength, love & faith to the Walker family during this heartbreaking time. We find our strength.. in his light. Love you brother.’

Universal Pictures also reacted with a statement, saying, ‘All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the Fast and Furious films, and to countless fans. New Transformers: Age of Extinction Pics Emerge Showing Off Jack Reynor & Mark Wahlberg

November 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Transformers-4-pic4
Michael Bay is hoping that despite a complete reboot of the human cast, audiences will still show up for Transformers: Age Of Extinction when it’s released next summer. Now seven new images have been released, showing off some of those humans, including Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor (who as the pic above proves, is very pretty).

The film fits into Hollywood’s increasing love affair with China (which has nothing to do with the fact it’s now the second largest market in the world for movies, we’re sure), as it will see the Americans helping the Autobots defend China from a Decepticon attack. However full plot details haven’t been released yet.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction is out June 27th, 2014. [Read more…]

New UK Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Poster Shows Chris Pine In Action

November 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jack-ryan-shadow-recruit-poster2
It’s only a couple of months until Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit arrives in UK cinemas, and ahead of that a new poster has been released, featuring Chris Pine in the title role, along with a floating Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley. It also promises intelligence is a weapon – not something that’s often seemed true in big Hollywood action films.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the CIA analyst created by espionage master Tom Clancy, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is a blistering action thriller that follows Ryan (Chris Pine, “Star Trek”) from his quiet double-life as a veteran-turned-Wall Street executive to his all-out initiation as a hunted American agent on the trail of a massive terrorist plot in Moscow.

‘Ryan appears to be just another New York executive to his friends and loved ones, but his enlistment into the CIA secretly goes back years. He was brought in as a brainy Ph.D. who crunches global data – but when Ryan ferrets out a meticulously planned scheme to collapse the U.S. economy and spark global chaos, he becomes the only man with the skills to stop it. Now, he’s gone fully operational, thrust into a world of mounting suspicion, deception and deadly force. Caught between his tight-lipped handler Harper (Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner), his in-the-dark fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley) and a brilliant Russian oligarch (Kenneth Branagh), Jack must confront a new reality where no one can seem to be trusted, yet the fate of millions rests on his finding the truth. With the urgency of a lit fuse, he’s in a race to stay one step ahead of everyone around him.’

It’s due out in the UK on January 24th, 2014.
