First Look At Neil Patrick Harris As Hedwig (And The Angry Inch)

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

neil-patrick-harris-hedwig-poster
Back in June it was revealed Neil Patrick Harris has signed up for the first proper Broadway staging of John Cameron Mitchell’s awesome Hedwig And The Angry Inch. Now we get our first look at him in the role with the glittery poster above.

Hedwig is about an East German immigrant to the US, whose botched sex change operation leaves her with the titular ‘angry inch’. After her relationship with a GI breaks down, she starts to date young hottie Tommy Gnosis, who leaves her behind when he takes her music and becomes a rock star.

The new production is set to premiere April 22nd, 2014. While the show started off-Broadway in 1998, this will be the first time it’s been staged in New York’s main theatre district.

Tickets go on sale soon – you can follow the show on Twitter @HedwigOnBway.

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

american-horror-story-asylum-dvd-coverThe strange creepiness of American Horror Story: Asylum hits DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on October 21st, and to celebrate that release, we’ve teamed up with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to give away three copies of the Blu-ray box set.

The year is 1964 as we’re introduced to the doctors and nuns who occupy the Briarcliff asylum alongside Nazis, mutants, innocents and serial killers, who all make up the fabric of patients. These include Sister Jude (Emmy award-winner Jessica Lange – Cape Fear), Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell – L.A. Confidential), Dr Oliver Thredson (Zachary Quinto – Star Trek) and Kit Walker (Evan Peters – the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past), a patient assumed to be the notorious masked serial killer Bloodyface. As journalist Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson – Martha, Marcy, May Marlene) visits Briarcliff intent on exposing its mistreatment of patients, she unearths unthinkable horrors that could end with her very own imprisonment.

Meanwhile, in the present day, two young adults visiting the now-derelict asylum are stalked by another incarnation of Bloodyface…

Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) and Dylan McDermott (Olympus Has Fallen) return from the first series of American Horror Story, and they are joined by new additions James Cromwell and Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love). There are also guest appearances from the likes of Ian McShane (Deadwood) and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine.

Alexander Skarsgard & Jamie Dornan On The Fifty Shades Of Grey Shortlist

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alexander-skarsgard06It’s only a few days since Charlie Hunnam dropped out of playing Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of the sexy best-seller Fifty Shades Of Grey. However, with an August 2014 release date, they need to find a replacement asap. THR suggests a shortlist has been drawn up, with Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) and Jamie Dornan (The Fall) two of the top contenders for the coveted role.

Universal Pictures is also returning to its earlier list of frontrunners, such as Theo James (Divergent) and Christian Cooke (Magic City). Garrett Hedlund had been in contention, but he is currently shooting Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, so he is no longer available.

The studio has also hired Patrick Marber to perform a polish of the screenplay, based on Kelly Marcel’s drafts. Marber previously wrote the likes of Closer and Notes on a Scandal.

With shooting due to kick off in a few weeks time, expect to hear who has the role very role.

Kate Beckinsale Will Have The Face of an Angel In A Film About Amanda Knox

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kate-BeckinsaleKate Beckinsale has signed up for The Face of an Angel, Michael Winterbottom’s upcoming drama about the trial of Amanda Knox. She joins the already cast Daniel Brühl and Cara Delevingne, according to Deadline.

The film revolves around the events surrounding Amanda Knox, a young an American woman living in Italy. She became involved in the November 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher. The victim was sexually assaulted, brutalised and then killed. Knox ended up charged with her killing. It appears Beckinsale will be a journalist who follows the case (based on Daily Beast senior writer Barbie Latza Nadeau, on whose book the film is based), and discovers how the Knox family’s heavy-handed efforts to control media coverage distorted the facts.

Interestingly, a while ago Colin Firth was attached to play the journalist – although at the point, the character was of course going to be a man. Delevingne is playing Knox (at one point Winterbottom wasn’t going to include Knox as a character in the movie at all, instead concentrating on the hoopla surrounding the case, so it may not be that be a role) with Daniel Brühl as a documentary filmmaker.

Ant-Man May Well Be Joseph Gordon-Levitt Or Paul Rudd

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-ruddIt seems that with Guardians Of The Galaxy recently wrapped and Thor: The Dark World in cinemas in a couple of weeks, Marvel is now concentrating on who will play the title role in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man. Now Variety is saying the insiders claim that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd are currently the top two candidates and one is likely to land the part.

No offers have been made yet, and there’s still a chance another actor could swoop in and take the coveted role. That said, both Rudd and Gordon-Levitt are expected to meet with Marvel executives and director Edgar Wright again before a final decision is made, and current indications suggest it’s a toss-up between them.

Ant-Man follows Dr. Hank Pym, who invents a substance that allows him to be shrunk down to an ant’s size. Edgar Wright is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The film’s due out summer 2015.

Russell Crowe Will Take On Mental Illness In Fathers and Daughters

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Russell-CroweRussell Crowe one an Oscar for playing a mentally ill man in A Beautiful Mind, so he may be hoping for more gongs with a new film he’s just signed up for. Variety reports he’ll take the lead in the drama Fathers and Daughters, for director Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness).

The movie is about the relationship a famous author and widow (Crowe), who struggles to raise his daughter while coping with a mental illness. The plot alternates between the daughter’s childhood and her life as a 30-year-old adult in New York, dealing with issues that stem from her unconventional upbringing. The studio is apparently eyeing a “major actress” to play the daughter, although there’s no news on who that might be.

Gabriele Muccino commented, “This is a performance-driven movie, and therefore I couldn’t ask for a better actor than Russell to deliver this intensely emotional drama. It’s edgy, heart-wrenching, and uplifting at the same time. To me, it feels like a classic American movie that recalls the great character dramas of the 70s like Kramer vs. Kramer and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Shooting is scheduled to begin in December.

Dwayne Johnson Up For Earthquake Thriller San Andreas: 3D

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dwayne-johnsonOver the last few years there have been numerous earthquake-based disaster flicks that have been put into development, but none have shown up in cinemas yet. Now one is moving forward, as Variety reports that Dwayne Johnson is reuniting with Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton for San Andreas: 3D.

Johnson will play a man who travels across California to rescue his estranged daughter after a massive earthquake strikes. The project has been in development at New Line Cinema since 2011, when Allan Loeb (The Switch) signed on to rewrite the original script by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore (Special). Lost’s Carlton Cuse signed on to rewrite the script in 2012, although the most recent draft was written by Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring).

The current plan is to shoot in the first quarter of 2014, although there’s no news on when it might be in cinemas.

Iron Man 3’s Ty Simpkins Joins Jurassic World, Jake Johnson May Sign On Too

October 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ty-simpkinsOften bringing child actors into franchises can be cheesy, but Ty Simpkins was a great little addition to Iron Man 3. It was obviously a good showcase for the young actor, as the 12-year-old has signed on for a lead role in Jurassic World, according to Deadline.

New Girl and Drinking Buddies star Jake Johnson is said to be in contention for an unspecified role, although the studio has not confirmed his possible involvement. If he signs on, the actor will reunite with his Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow. A few weeks ago it was revealed that Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks for the film, and it appears she still hasn’t signed on the dotted line.

The film will apparently take us back to the original Jurassic Park island, which is now a working theme park with real-life dinosaurs. The film is due for release on June 12th, 2015.

Behind The Candelabra (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe, Scott Bakula, Debbie Reynolds, Matt Damon
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

Hollywood studios refused to pay for Behind The Candelabra as despite the presence of Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s 11) and having a relatively low-budget, they thought it was too gay to become a success. They’re probably kicking themselves now as HBO stepped up to the pay for it and had a huge hit with it on US TV, while distributors in other countries took it to cinemas and saw healthy box office.
