Captain America & Batman Vs. Superman Release Date Showdown Set

March 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-2-final-poster-slideA couple of days ago, Marvel head Kevin Fiege was talking about the fact that DC had moved its planned Batman Vs. Superman onto a release date that was already occupied by a then unknown Marvel movie. Fiege said they weren’t backing off the date, although wouldn’t be drawn on what the film they were making actually was.

Now we know, as THR reports that it’s Captain America 3 that’s set to be released on the same day as Batman Vs. Superman on May 6th, 2016.

So the current question is whether you would prefer to swoon at Henry Cavill or Chris Evans.

It’s turning into a massive game of chicken, as neither studio wants to end up losing audience to the other, but equally both wants to show its film is the most important and should get the prime Memorial Day release. There’s a chance both films will indeed come out on that day, although with more than two years to go, there’s a greater chance that either Marvel or DC will find an excuse to move to another date.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are confirmed to return for Captain America 3, although it’s not known exactly when it will shoot. It’s likely to be early next year.

Neil Patrick Harris Says Doing Hedwig ‘Brings Up A Lot Of Homophobic Insecurities Within Myself’

March 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris-out2-slide
A lot of people are excited about the idea of Neil Patrick Harris starring in the first Broadway production of John Cameron Mitchell’s excellent LGBT-themed rock musical, Hedwig And The Angry Inch, but the actor suggests it hasn’t been plain sailing for him. Indeed it’s been a challenge in ways you might not have expected.

In the musical he plays the East German title character, who was left with an angry inch after a botched sex change operation. Hedwig then starts dating young Tommy Gnosis, who leaves her behind when he takes her music and becomes a rock star.

Talking to Out magazine, Harris says “Hedwig is bringing up a lot of super insecure things within me. I have never thought drag was intoxicating, I’ve never had a fun drunken Halloween in drag, never been in heels, really. I’ve lived my whole life being attracted by masculinity — it’s why I like guys.”

He adds, “I’m not a super effete person, and I have to turn into that, and in doing so it brings up a lot of homophobic insecurities within myself.”

Harris isn’t going to let that affect the in-your-face nature of Hedwig though, as “Part of Hedwig is Iggy Pop in all of his fucked-up glory. So I’m looking forward to squatting down in front of the first row and having people spit in my mouth. It’s that kind of show. I’m anxious, one night, to fall backwards and be led on my back by people with their hands outstretched. I don’t think that will ever happen, but that’s the vibe I’m looking for — that’s the vibe I have to embrace. I don’t fucking care — you gotta go to a nasty place.”

However while he may be dealing with some of his own insecurities, he’s largely been happy with how little most people cared when he came out, saying, “I’ve found that a lot of girls have no issue with me being gay. They still want to marry me. And I love that.”

You can read the full and very interesting interview with Neil Patrick Harris by clicking here. Take a look below for some of the great pics from the Out interview, and there are more here.

Hedwig And The Angry Inch starring Harris premieres in New York next month. [Read more…]

First Kiss Short Film – Strangers are brought together to make out for the very first time

March 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems people like to watch others kiss. Since Tatia Pilieva’s first short film, First Kiss, was uploaded to Youtube yesterday, an astonishing 10 million people have viewed it!

It’s perhaps not too surprising as it’s a surprisingly sweet yet intimate and sensual vid, made more so by the fact the first half doesn’t jump straight into the snogging. It spends some time showing us the 20 strangers who were brought together to document their first kiss on camera.

Most people seem shy and uncertain, and not just because there’s a camera there. However when the lips touch, some get really into it while others remain a touch awkward. And while the two women who’ve been paired up seem quite happy to get kissing, the two guys aren’t quite as comfortable, but do manage a quick peck.

Take a look above. [Read more…]

The Normal Heart Teaser Trailer – Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch and co. take on Larry Kramer’s classic play

March 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After several years in development, The Normal Heart is finally on its way, with Glee’s Ryan Murphy directing an all-star cast for a film that will first air on HBO in the US on May 25th. It looks like it’s gonna be pretty good, with the movie bringing out the fear and confusion present in Larry Kramer’s classic play about the early days of AIDS, before those affected decide to fight back against a system that is almost as afraid of the type of people often affected by HIV as it is of the disease itself.

Mark Ruffalo takes on the lead role of Ned Weeks, who in the early 80s is one of the first people to raise an alarm about the new disease that initially was known as ‘Gay Cancer’, but which later was called HIV/AIDS. Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons will be gay activist Tommy Boatwright, a role he previously took in a 2011 Broadway revival of the play.

Julia Roberts is Emma Brookner, a doctor who is the only one of her peers in New York taking AIDS seriously. Matt Bomer is Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned’s lover. Jonathan Groff is playing an early victim of the disease called Craig, whose boyfriend, Taylor Kitsch, starts off as a closeted investment banker but eventually becomes an AIDS activist.

Larry Kramer’s play is considered one of the most important reactions to the early AIDS epidemic, written by someone who has on the front lines of the fight, such as co-founding Gay Men’s Health Crisis and ACT UP. He later wrote a follow-up, The Destiny Of Me.

The rest of the world should get to see The Normal Heart shortly after its US HBO debut. [Read more…]

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Teaser Trailer – Back into the comic book world with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lady Gaga & loads more

March 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised, the first trailer for Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has arrived, taking us back into Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s highly stylised, hard-boiled, comic book world.

The sequel features the return of Sin City stars Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson, along with newcomers such as Jamie Chung, Alexa Vega, Lady Gaga, Josh Brolin (taking over Clive Owen’s role), Ray Liotta, Marton Csokas, Eva Green and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller’s visually stunning “Sin City” graphic novels back to the screen in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Weaving together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales, the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the follow up to Rodriguez and Miller’s 2005 groundbreaking film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY.’

It’s out in the US on August 22nd and in the UK on August 29th. [Read more…]

Transformers: Age of Extinction Trailer – The rules have changed for Mark Wahlberg & Jack Reynor

March 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After lots of posters and promises, the trailer for Transformers: Age Of Extinction is here. All the posters said that ‘The rules have changed’, but from the look of it the rules of Michael Bay moviemaking haven’t, with women there to look pretty and lots of things exploding.

There are some pretty cool shots, including looks at the dinobots which will show up in the film.

In the movie, Mark Wahlberg will play Cade, the father of Nicol Peltz’s Tessa. Jack Reynor meanwhile is Tessa’s boyfriend, Shane. Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles and Bingbing Li also star, with Michae Bay once more directing. The movie will be out in cinemas in late June in the US and early July in the UK. Jared Leto Wins Oscar For Playing Trans Character, While Gravity Takes The Most Prizes

March 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-degeneres-oscars-selfie
After months of speculation and a seemingly endless run-up, the Oscars have finally happened, with Gravity taking the most gongs with seven. It dominated the technical categories including Editing, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Score and, not surprisingly, Visual Effects. However it also took Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron, marking just what an achievement the Academy thought the film was.

However the movie didn’t take the Best Picture Oscar, as that went to 12 Years A Slave, which also took Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o and Best Adapted Screenplay. As expected Dallas Buyers Club took both of the actor awards, with Matthew McConaughey winning Best Actor and Jared Leto taking Best Supporting Actor for playing trans character Rayon. Both McConaughey and Leto paid tribute to those who have battled or died from AIDS, as well as those who’ve struggled to be accepted as themselves.

More uncertain was Best Actress. While Cate Blanchett had been the frontrunner, the controversy over Woody Allen threw a spanner in the works. She nevertheless won the award for Blue Jasmine.

Although host Ellen Denegeres (who certainly did a good job) probably scored the best win of the night, with the star-packed photo above.

Gravity (Blu-ray 3D)

March 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris
Director: Alfonso Cuaron
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 3rd 2014

It took a long time to get Gravity off the ground. For a start there were the technical challenges that many thought were insurmountable. There were also the studios, who were perhaps understandably wary of spending $100 million on a movie where for much of the time it’s just a woman floating about in space. Universal developed the film but then got cold feet and backed out due to the risks. Thankfully Warner Bros. stepped in and they’ve been paid back in spades, with the movie surprising most observers by grossing over $700 million at the box office and getting 10 Oscar nominations.

However some have wondered whether a movie that seems so designed to be watched in 3D on the big screen would translate into the home. The answer is that it works very well, and while the movie certainly looks good in Blu-ray 3D, it’s just as well worth viewing in 2D, where it’s actually easier to appreciate the immense artistry and filmmaking skill on show rather than simply being overwhelmed by the visceral impact of the 3D. HBO Is Giving The Gay-Themed Series Looking A Second Season, With Russell Tovey Becoming A Regular

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

looking-posterWhile there was a lot of hype over the launch of the San Francisco set, gay-themed series Looking, it wasn’t known whether HBO was likely to commission a second season. Indeed, before the first episode aired, creators Andrew Haigh and Michael Lannan suggested it was far from being sure thing.

However now THR reports that HBO has indeed decided it wants Season 2 of Looking, and that it’s hoping a new set of episode that it can air later this year. It’s certainly good news for the show to be picked up before it’s even finished its first season, suggesting the network has a lot of confidence in it.

There’s also some good news for some of the show’s actors, as the recurring characters played by Lauren Weedman (Doris), Raul Castillo (Richie) and Russell Tovey (Kevin) will be promoted to series regulars, joining Jonathan Groff (Patrick), Frankie J. Alvarez (Agustin) and Murray Bartlett (Dom).

After the first episode aired, the future of Looking seemed very uncertain. Despite the hype, only 338,000 people tuned in for the initial screening. However the figures have improved significantly as the show has continued, and strong international sales have also helped. Aggregate viewing including repeats and on-demand in the US now stands at about two million viewers a week.

Adam Driver Close To Getting Villainous In Star Wars: Episode VII

February 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Adam-Driver
It seems we know the first new actor to join Star Wars Episode VII, as after endless rumours of just about everyone who’s everyone on the planet being in contention for the movie, both Variety and THR report that Girls star Adam Driver in in talk to play a villain in the movie.

Nothing is completely set yet, but Driver is apparently nearing a deal for the undisclosed role. Sources suggest this role may be the role that Michael Fassbender met for late last year and that Joel Kinnaman seem to have tested for it as well. However little is known about the part itself or who exactly Driver will be playing.

Although we’ve known Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would all return, Adam Driver is the first new actor we’ve known will probably be in the film. However it’s believed numerous other roles are very close to being cast, although director JJ Abrams and Disney are trying to keep an absolute shroud of secrecy over the production.

Expect to hear more soon though, as it’s due to start shooting in April/May.
