Leonardo Dicaprio May Play Imitation Game

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Another day, another movie Leonardo DiCaprio might make. While he does love storing up an almost ridiculous amount of potential projects, this one is a little more intriguing than most, as well as being a role he could be extremely good in. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has bought the spect script The Imitiation Game, with DiCaprio having ‘the inside track’ the play the lead role.

That would see him as British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist Alan Turing. ‘Informed’ by Andrew Hodges’ definitive biography, ‘Alan Turing: The Enigma’, the film will look at the shy man who is now seen by many as the father of modern computing. His work led to the creation of some of the first computers, which were used to help the Allies decode German communications during WWII. However due to the sensitive nature of his work, his contribution wasn’t officially recognised for many years.

Indeed, rather than being praised by his country, he was persecuted for being gay, which led to depression, the destruction of his career and him eventually killing himself by eating a cyanide-laced apple. It’s an incredible story, and with increased interest in Turing in recent years, it was only time until Hollywood moved forward with a movie about him.

Deadline adds that’s they’ve heard Ron Howard is interested in directing the project. If he does, he’d better not de-gay this genius as he did with John Nash in A Beautiful Mind, or he’ll be walking into a storm of protest. And presuming Turing’s gayness is left intact, it would be another movie for DiCaprio about someone with a complex sexuality following J. Edgar.

Lone Ranger Gets The Greenlight

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The game of hardball between Disney, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer seems to have come to an end, as Deadline reports that after all sorts of issues, the studio has finally given the Lone Ranger the green light.

Back in August it looked like things were all over for the movie, as Disney cancelled it when Verbinski said he couldn’t make the film for less than $250-$275 million. Disney wanted it to cost $200 million or less. With neither side budging, the studio simply pulled the plug. Since then, Bruckheimer, Verbinski and Depp have all been working on making the film cheaper, and have also taken pay cuts. Portions of the script were also revised to keep most of the spectacle, but for a lower cost. It’ll now cost $215 million, which the studio seems happy with.

Johnny Depp will star as Tonto, while Armie Hammer is set to portray the title character. Several other people, such as Helena Bonham Carter and Tom Wilkinson were cast in the film before it was cancelled, but it’s not known if they’ll stick around following the delays. A December 21, 2012 release date is still currently set for Lone Ranger, although that date seems likely to change since production isn’t expected to begin until January or February of 2012 (Disney will announce later this week exactly when the film will shoot).

Soderbergh’s Liberace Film Moves Forward

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A film directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon sounds like it should be going to cinemas, doesn’t it? Well, it won’t be, as the increasingly powerful US cable network HBO has stepped in to finance the flick, which means that while the Leberace biopic will finally get made, it’ll be a TV premiere.

Soderbergh has been trying to get the Liberace flick off the ground for a couple years now, with Douglas attached to the flamboyant lead role, and more recently Matt Damon signing on to play Scott Thorson,  the pianist’s younger live-in lover.

Everyone involved in the movie is gushing over getting together with HBO, but it’s difficult to tell whether the move toTV really is because they feel the channel will be the best place for Behind The Candelabra, or if it’s because nobody else wanted to pay for it. The former is more likely than you might expect, simply because HBO is likely to give Soderbergh more freedom to do whatever he wants than a studio would, and has done stirling work with the likes of the mini-series Mildred Pierce.

The director commented, “From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it. HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us. Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.”

Shooting with start next summer, so expect to see it (probably on Sky Atlantic in the UK) sometime late 2012 or 2013.

Bullock May Have Trouble With the Curve

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Last week we found out that while Clint Eastwood had said Gran Torino would be his last trip in front of the camera, he was in talks to star in the baseball drama Trouble With The Curve, the directorial debut of frequent Eastwood collaborator Robert Lorenz. Now it appears he may have some star company in the movie, as Twitch reports that Sandra Bullock is in talks to sign on.

The script, by Randy Brown, follows an aging baseball scout who’s slowly losing his vision, but goes on a road trip with his adult daughter to look for new players in Atlanta. As this may well be Eastwood’s last film, the role of the daughter is undoubtedly a coveted one and so it’s a bit of a no-brainer for Bullock to agree to it. She may be best known for her comedic roles, but she’s actually better at drama, as evidenced by her Oscar win for The Blind Side.

The no news on when Trouble With The Curve might start shooting, but it should be fairly soon, as Eastwood is currently free because Beyonce’s pregnancy has delayed the making of his planned A Star Is Born remake.

Jim Carrey In Talks For Burt Wonderstone

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Are you ready for Jim Carrey the magician? It could be a lot of fun (assuming he actually tries to be funny, which he seems to have forgotten how to do in his last few movies). Deadline reports that Carrey is now in discussions to star in Burt Wonderstone, alongside Steve Carell.

The film centres on Steve Carell’s title character, a popular Las Vegas magician who gets upstaged by a hip new street performer. Wonderstone then goes on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim his love of magic. It isn’t completely clear who Jim Carrey is playing, but it seems he would play the street magician.

Carrey and Carell worked well together in Bruce Almighty and they’ll soon both be voices in Horton Hears A Who, so this third tie up is fairly welcome news.

It isn’t known when production will start on Burt Wonderstone, but seeing as the script has been around since 2006, let’s hope it’s fairly soon.

Don Johnson May Join Django Unchained

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While Quentin Tarantino has been putting an impressive cast together for Django Unchained, so far it’s lacked his trademark actor on the downswing of their career who needs a bit of a boost. Now it’s got one, as Variety reports that Don Johnson is now in talks to join the film.

The actor will play a plantation owner called Spencer Bennett, who runs into Django (Jamie Foxx) and the German bounty hunter Schultz (Christoph Waltz) as they search for Django’s wife. Bennett is also said to oversee a stable of black prostitutes he calls “ponies.”

Tarantino has reportedly been courting Don Johnson for several months, and it seems the actor finally gave in. Quite why he took so long is anyone’s guess. Can’t he remember what happened to John Travolta post Pulp Fiction? It’s not like Johnson is exactly in demand, is it, so you’d have thought he’d had jumped the moment Tarantino called.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, and Laura Cayouette are also set to star in Django Unchained, which starts shooting in the next couple of months.

Michael Fassbender Joins 12 Years a Slave

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

You’d have thought that Steve McQueen might have wanted to leave Michael Fassbender out of 12 Years A Slave, just so he could find out whether he could actually make a movie without him. However Variety reports that after Fassbender appeared in both of McQueen’s first two films (Hunger and Shame), he’ll also now be in his third, although we don’t know what role he’ll play.

The project is based on the true story of Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man in the mid-19th Century who was kidnapped in Washington and sold into slavery. He was rescued from a Louisiana cotton plantation in 1853.

McQueen is directing 12 Years a Slave from a screenplay he co-wrote with John Ridley. Production is scheduled to begin early next year on 12 Years a Slave.

Lost in Austen Gets Director Nora Epron

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Not long after the mini-series Lost In Austen aired in the UK in 2008 it was snapped up by Hollywood producers for a Tinsel Town version. However we haven’t heard much about it since then – until now, that is. Sony Pictures has managed to snag chick flick maestro Nora Ephron (Sleepless In Seattle, You’ve Got Mail) to write and direct the movie.

Lost in Austen tells the tale of a modern-day woman who is a passionate fan of Jane Austen. She somehow finds herself swapping places with the fictional Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice.

Nora Ephron is writing the screenplay for Lost in Austen, based on Guy Andrews’ mini-series script. Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris will produce. It will be Ephron frst film since 2009’s Julie & Julia. (Source: Variety)

Anna Kendrick Finds The Company You Keep

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Director Robert Redford is certainly filling out the cast for his upcoming political thriller The Company You Keep, with Variety reporting that the increasingly impressive ensemble now includes Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Elliott, and newcomer Jackie Evancho, an 11-year-old finalist on America’s Got Talent. They join Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf, Brit Marling, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon, Richard Jenkins, Julie Christie, Stephen Root, Stanley Tucci and Chris Cooper in the Lem Dobbs-scripted pic, based on the novel by Neil Gordon.

Robert Redford stars as Jim Grant, a former Weather Underground militant wanted by the FBI for 30 years, who must go on the run when a young, ambitious reporter (Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity. Anna Kendrick will play Diana, a young FBI agent and Shia LaBeouf’s former flame, who provides him with that information he needs to uncover the truth about Grant and a Bank of Michigan robbery.

Terrence Howard will play Cornelius, the senior FBI agent on the case who has relentlessly pursued Grant across the nation and now leads the task force assigned to take down the Weather Underground fugitives who have been on the run for three decades. Brendan Gleeson will play Henry Osborne, the retired Michigan Chief of Police who investigated the bank robbery in the 1960s, while Sam Elliott will be Mac, Julie Christie’s employer in the marijuana trade who used to be romantically involved with her. Jackie Evancho will play Robert Redford’s daughter, who recently lost her mother and is unaware of her father’s militant past.

It’s an incredible cast for what should be a very intriguing movie. The political action thriller is currently filming in Vancouver.

Drive Gets Sued For Not Being Fast & Furious

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

This is one of those stories where you have to wonder whether there’s something more going on than first meets the eye. Moviefone has managed to uncover a legal complaint by a Michigan woman who is suing the distributor of the acclaimed movie Drive for false advertising.

Sarah Deming filed a lawsuit against FilmDistrict (as well as the cinema where she saw the movie), claiming the trailer misled her into thinking it was an action movie along the lines of Fast & Furious. The fact a very brief bit of research would have told exactly what Drive was – as well that the trailer doesn’t make it look much like Fast & Furious – doesn’t seem to have crossed her mind. And even if it did, is it worth a lawsuit? Indeed her real problem seems to be that she’s so dim that she decided a film called Drive had to be like like Fast & Furious, and when it wasn’t she was upset. Her lawsuit says, “[The studio] promoted the film Drive as very similar to the Fast & Furious, or similar series of movies. Drive bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film…having very little driving in the motion picture.”

However while mismarketing is the main substance of her suit, it appears it may be a pretext Deming has used to make a statement against what she perceives as anti-semitism in the movie. Another part of her companint says, “Drive was a motion picture that substantially contained extreme gratuitous defamatory dehumanizing racism directed against members of the Jewish faith, and thereby promoted criminal violence against members of the Jewish faith.” However seeing as it’s difficult to class the film as even vaguely anti-semitic (beyond Ron Perlman’s gangster being Jewish), God know what she was thinking here.

Sarah Deming is not only seeking to be reimbursed for the cost of her Drive ticket, but she is also seeking a ban on misleading movie trailers, and there’s also talk of turning it into a class action lawsuit. Maybe this one woman did just get to the end of her tether and launch a lawsuit that makes her look like an idiot, but I still can’t escape the feeling there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Diego Boneta Signs Up For Paradise Lost

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Diego Boneta may not be much of a name now, having only had a few guest spots in the likes of 90210, but the presumption is that with a lead role in the musical Rock Of Ages, the Mexican musician/actor will be a much better known by this time next year. It’s probably that which has helped him snag a role in Alex Proyas’ adaptation of John Milton’s classic poem, Paradise Lost.

Deadline reports that the actor will portray Adam, the first man on Earth, opposite Camilla Belle, who’s already been cast as Eve. I know Milton’s tale of the huge battle in heaven and the fall of Lucifer isn’t exactly scientific, but I’m pretty certain the first man and woman on Earth weren’t white/hispanic, which both Bell and Boneta are. But having a black Adam & Eve would probably freak out redneck, unthinking, bible belt Americansm so Belle and Boneta are probably a safer choice. It’ll also be interesting to see how the film handles the first human’s nudity – will it be fig leaves all round, or an extended version of the nude scenes in Austin Powers?

Bradley Cooper, Ben Walker, Casey Affleck, Callan McAuliffe, Dominic Purcell and Djimon Hounsou will also star as the varioius angelic factions fighting it out. The film starts shooting soon for release in 2013.

Pete Travis Not Out Of Dredd After All

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

At the weekend we reported that director Pete Travis (Vantage Point), was no longer part of the team that’s putting a new film version of Judge Dredd together, and that writer/producer Alex Garland had taken over in the editing room and would complete the project. There were even talks of reshoots being needed (although no one was sure who would helm them) and that Garland may have sought a co-directing credit.

However, now Travis and Garland have stepped forward and issued a statement refuting what was said in the initial LA Times report that brought us news of possible problems on Dredd. They told the Times that, “During all stages of the filmmaking, ‘Dredd’ has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties. From the outset we decided on an unorthodox collaboration to make the film. This situation has been misinterpreted. To set the record straight, Pete was not fired and remains a central part of the collaboration, and Alex is not seeking a co-director credit. We are all extremely proud of the film we have made, and respectfully suggest that it is judged on viewing when its released next year.”

It’s interesting that they use the words ‘misinterpreted’ rather than wrong, as it still suggests Garland may be in charge of all things post-production. Indeed from that statement it’s still possible that Travis has pretty much removed himself from Dredd, it’s just that he wasn’t fired. As they say though, we should wait to judge the film when we see it, but history suggests that once a film starts having problems in post-production (which on balance it still seems Dredd has), it’s difficult to overcome them.
