World War Z (DVD)

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Peter Capaldi, Brad Pitt
Director: Marc Forster
Running Time: 111 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 21st 2013

After a troubled production history, many thought World War Z would be the flop of the summer. However it became a pretty decent hit, grossing over $540 million around the world. That’s pretty impressive for a film that had to have its entire final act scrapped and a brand new one shot to replace it.

Brad Pitt plays Gerry Lane, who gets in his car one morning with his family and heads off into the city. Suddenly all hell breaks loose, as out of nowhere zombies start ravaging the streets, attacking everyone they can find and turning them into one of them. Gerry and his family manage to escape and soon learn the zombie plague has spread across the world. [Read more…]

Grimm – Season 2 (Blu-ray)

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz
Director: Various
Running Time: 951 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 21st 2013

Grimm is one of those shows where the premise is so silly that it really ought to be dreadful, but it’s actually a lot of fun. It’s helped by some good actors and a tone that manages to be slightly contrary, as the characters take the set-up very seriously, but there’s still a sense it knows it’s often a bit daft. Hummingbird (Blu-ray)

October 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jason Statham, Agata Buzec, Vicky McClure, Benedict Wong
Director: Steven Knight
Running Time: 100 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 21st 2013

Jason Statham’s career so far has turned him into a brand as much as a movie star – as with many action stars before him, his name has come to connote big, dumb action movies with OTT stunts and plots that are simply showcases for the action. It’s done him well and his name is often enough to sell the movie to mindless action fans, but it becomes a problem when he attempts to do something different. Hummingbird has come in for a bit of flack, not so much because of what it is but due to what it isn’t. Namely it isn’t a ‘Jason Statham’ movie. Indeed it has more in common with the arthouse than the likes of Crank. [Read more…]

Behind The Candelabra (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe, Scott Bakula, Debbie Reynolds, Matt Damon
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

Hollywood studios refused to pay for Behind The Candelabra as despite the presence of Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s 11) and having a relatively low-budget, they thought it was too gay to become a success. They’re probably kicking themselves now as HBO stepped up to the pay for it and had a huge hit with it on US TV, while distributors in other countries took it to cinemas and saw healthy box office. Out In The Dark (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Nicholas Jacob, Michael Aloni, Jamil Khoury, Alon Pdut
Director: Michael Mayer
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

When I’m reviewing gay-themed films, I sometimes feel I’m using the word ‘forgive’ too much. With many of these films you can see there’s a lot that’s good about them, but you have to forgive the acting, the low-budget (and resulting picture or sound issues), the shaky direction or slightly unfinished script. It’s always great then when you find a gay-themed film that’s just a good movie, and Out In The Dark certainly fits in that category. [Read more…]

Chicago Fire – Season 1 (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Charlie Bartlett
Director: Various
Running Time: 1080 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

I’m not sure why American TV thinks Chicago is mainly about the emergency services, but after the likes of ER, Chicago Hope and The Chicago Code comes Chicago Fire, following the theme that residents of the city need saving an awful lot. As you may have guessed, the series follows a group of firefighters, in this case the men and women of Firehouse 51.

The team includes Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), who leads the team but is dealing with relationship problems and a mother who’s locked up for killing his father. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) meanwhile has become addicted to painkillers and is trying to cover this up, partly because if he has the surgery that could sort out his pain problem, he could end up behind a desk. Summer In February (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dan Stevens, Emily Browning, Dominic Cooper, Hattie Morahan
Director: Christopher Menaul
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

Set against the backdrop of the Cornish coast in 1913, Summer In February follows the true story of the Lamorna group of Newlyn Artists. Florence (Emily Browning) arrives in Cornwall to stay with her brother after escaping her overbearing father. She hopes to fulfil her dreams of becoming an artist and is excited to be welcomed into the group who’ve set themselves up on the Lamorna estate. [Read more…]

Spiders (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Patrick Muldoon, Christa Campbell, William Hope, Shelly Varod, Brian Hankey
Director: Tibor Takacs
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

3D has largely been limited to the cinema. While 3D Blu-ray has attempted to bring it to the small screen, nearly all the releases have been for cinema movies when they come to the home. However Spiders comes direct to Blu-ray as a 3D release, which may mark a new horizon for straight-to-disc movies. However on DVD we only get it in two-dimensions, which robs the film of a lot of the fun it might have had – which would have been mild anyway. [Read more…]

Breathe In (Blu-ray)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan, Mackenzie Davis
Director: Drake Doremus
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 7th 2013

I loved Drake Doremus’ Like Crazy, which managed the rare feat of making a love story feel fresh, real, new and passionate. I had high hope for Breathe In, but unfortunately while there are some things to admire, the overall feeling is that the film is slightly tedious and contrived.

Sophie (Felicity Jones) is a foreign exchange student who arrives in upstate New York to stay with Keith (Guy Pearce), his wife Megan (Amy Ryan) and daughter Lauren (Mackenzie Davis). Keith and Sophie share a love of music, and slowly their musical connection develop into feelings for one another, but neither is sure whether they should act upon them. [Read more…]

The Iceman (DVD)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, David Schwimmer
Director: Ariel Vromen
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 30th 2013

The Iceman is a textbook case of how to take a fascinating true story and make it far duller than it actually ought to be. It can’t quite decide whether it wants to ditch the facts and just be a rollicking story or stick close to the truth in order go deep into reality – and its indecision results in a film that doesn’t seem to know quite what it’s for, other than killing a lot of people.
