October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Colfer, Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch
Director: Various
Running Time: 924 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 7th 2013

It’s all change in the world of Glee. Many of the main characters have graduated, so Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) have headed off to New York, initially Finn (Cory Monteith) is in the army, while others have headed off to various other places.

That means there’s space for some new Glee Club kids at McKinley High, while a few of the old faces are still waiting to graduate. Meanwhile Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma’s (Jayma Mays) relationship is at a crossroads and most shockingly of all for fans of Klaine, Kurt and Blaine’s (Darren Criss) love may not be able to withstand the distance between them! Much Ado About Nothing (2013) (DVD)

October 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Fran Kranz, Sean Maher, Nathan Fillion
Director: Joss Whedon
Running Time: 112 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 7th 2013

If you were in post-production on a movie that wasn’t just the biggest film of your career but one of the most ambitious franchise tie-ups ever attempted, you’d think you’d just concentrate on that. However while Joss Whedon was completing The Avengers, he also managed to find time to shoot a low-budget, black and white version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, set in modern-day California. The man sure likes to work. [Read more…]

Struck By Lightning (DVD)

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Colfer, Allison Janney, Rebel Wilson, Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney
Director: Brian Dannelly
Running Time: 86 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: September 30th 2013

Chris Colfer made his name as Kurt on Glee. While that keeps him pretty busy, he’s found time to write some children’s books and also the screenplay for Struck By Lightning. The fact he’s still only 23 is quite sickening.

He also takes the lead role here as Carson Phillips, who in the first few seconds of the movie is hit by lightning and killed. The film then flashes back to see how he got to that point. Carson is a senior in high school with dreams of becoming a journalist. He knows where he wants to work and what university he intends to go to – and he’s determined to get there. [Read more…]

Iron Man 3 (Blu-ray)

September 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Shane Black
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: September 9th 2013

Iron Man 3 presented an interesting challenge to Marvel, as it’s the completion of the Iron Man trilogy – with no stand-alone adventures for Downey Jr’s metal man likely to follow – but also the follow-up to The Avengers and a prequel to his appearance in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. As such the movie could have ended up a complete mess, unsure what it was meant to be doing. However it actually handles the challenge fairly well, sewing up themes from the earlier Iron Man movies, while having Tony Stark rocked by the events of the Battle Of New York, which have started causing him to have panic attacks. Star Trek Into Darkness (Blu-ray)

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban
Director: JJ Abrams
Running Time: 131 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: Spetember 2nd 2013

While JJ Abrams’ reinvention of Star Trek has proven very popular with audiences, there are quite a few uber-fans of the TV incarnations who pretty much seem to think Abrams is the anti-Christ. If they’d been hoping that Star Trek Into Darkness would be an olive branch, taking things back to exactly how they’d been before, they were sadly mistaken. Instead the movie forges forward with its parallel reality, doing things that will ensure classic Trek fans who didn’t like the first film will be absolutely spitting feathers at its twisting of earlier stories, while others will love the way it cleverly renews things. Mud (Blu-ray)

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tye Sheridan, Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard, Jacob Lofland
Director: Jeff Nichols
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: September 2nd 2013

Director Jeff Nichols impressed many with his film Take Shelter and has got a lot more critical acclaim for Mud. Part Huckleberry Finn, a little bit dark fairy tale, and with more than splash of Southern Gothic and Whistle Down The Wind thrown in, it’s an absorbing film even if it likes to take its time doing anything.

Ellis (Tye Sheridan) is a young teen who lives with his parents on a houseboat in Arkansas. The river is his father’s life, although his mother is on the verge of packing up and leaving. Along with his friend, Neckbone (Jacob Loflan), Ellis heads off to find a boat that’s gotten stuck in a tree during a flood. They want to make the vessel theirs but they discover it’s being used by a man called Mud (Matthew McConaughey) as somewhere to sleep. [Read more…]

The Host (Blu-ray)

July 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, Jake Abel, Diane Kruger, William Hurt
Director: Andrew Niccol
Running Time: 125 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 29th 2013

After the success of Twilight, it was little surprise that a movie version of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host was put into the works. It seemed to bode well when Truman Show and In Time scribe Andrew Niccol was hired to write and direct, as he’s got a good track record when it comes to somewhat cerebral sci-fi. However the end result is rather underwhelming – not bad, but far from great. [Read more…]

Starring: Frank Langella, James Marsden, Peter Sarsgaard, Susan Sarandon, Liv Tyler
Director: Jake Schreier
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 15th 2013

Hunter (James Marsden) is fed up with dealing with his aging father, Frank (Frank Langella), and so rather than having to constantly drives miles to sort him out, he buys him a robot (voiced by Peter Sarsgaard), who’ll serve as a carer and butler. Frank doesn’t want this contraption, but eventually agrees to keep it while simultaneously plotting ways to get rid of it.

However Frank slowly realises the bot may have a use. Frank is a former jewel thief, and he recognises that the robot can be taught skills such as lock picking, which Frank can use in a scheme he cooks up to rejoin his former criminal profession. [Read more…]

Red Dawn (2013) (Blu-ray)

July 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Adrianne Palicki
Director: Dan Bradley
Running Time: 93 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 8th 2013

Red Dawn was shot in 2009, before Chris Hemsworth became Thor and Josh Hutcherson made The Hunger Games, but it got caught up in MGM’s bankruptcy, resulting in the movie only now arriving on Blu-ray and DVD. While there was a decent reason for the delay, the fact is that like many movies that have sat on the shelf for a while, it’s not great – although it could have been a lot worse. [Read more…]
